Chairmans Message May I take this opportunity to wish all our members, spectators, friends, players, committee, and volunteers a very happy and prosperous year. 2018 was no doubt a challenging year for us a as club but my thanks must initially go to our three captains, Jon, Chris and Jonathan, for their hard work in encouraging, cajoling and developing our players in the Bury way. Our first eleven started well, had a difficult middle and a good end to the season finishing fifth. Gustav Nolte our South African overseas player topped the bowling figures by taking fifty seven wickets with four five wicket hauls. Asif Iqbal top scored in the league with 653 runs closely followed by Ben Gorton with 623 runs. Our second team had an excellent season finishing second in the league in a division that consisted of four first elevens and gaining promotion. Special mentions to Arshad Raza on being leading wicket taker and to two young newcomers to the club Nathan Ramsay and Lee Halliwell who I am sure will through the 2019 season be aiming to get into the first team. Our thirds had an excellent season finishing second in the league with Zain Khan top scoring and our captain Jonathan Stackhouse being leading wicket taker. Our fourth team played a number of friendly games throughout the region and will continue to do so. Our Juniors continue to develop and I wish to thank Sam Holt and his dedicated helpers, Maddy, Jordan, Dominic, Matt and the excellent group of managers and support staff. It would be equally remiss not to thank Susan for her excellent work in the pavilion, my fellow committee members for all their efforts and to our scorers, James, Josh, and Freddie our thanks go once again for their excellent efforts. We were honoured to be considered as one of the four clubs of the year for Lancashire winning the award for South Lancashire, in addition we were reaccredited for Club Mark and also hosted six Lancashire Cricket Club boys and girls fixtures and the finals of the Lancashire ECB Under 19’s T20 Final and the Lancashire under 13’s Club Final.
On Ground related matters we have applied for a grant to improve the remainder of the outfield, improve the car parking and add additional fencing and benches. We are just a year away from 2020, the 175th anniversary of our formation as a club which also coincides with 100 years at Radcliffe Road and we will begin to formulate plans this year for that. Our aim on the playing front is for all our teams to progress and we hope that we can continue to develop our players. To that end this year we are pleased to announce that Martin Kay has agreed to become our senior coach and that Sam Holt has joined us a player. We can confirm that our two overseas players will be Wicardo Visser from South Africa and Milton Shumba from Zimbabwe. Our golf day continues to go from strength to strength and our 7th Annual Event will take place on Friday 11th May at Pike Fold. Your support is welcome. Last year’s summer tour of Wales was an even greater success than before and was enjoyed by all. The tour week will commence on Tuesday 23rd July at Bangor followed by Mochdre CC on the Wednesday, before finishing at Colwyn Bay on the Thursday. If you have not been it is not to be missed. We are also very pleased that Archway Building Services will continue as Main Club Sponsor for this season. Mark Smith – Chairman All Stars Cricket returns to Bury Cricket Club for 2019. Pete Allen It's always difficult to summarise a player so soon after they have left us. I think you can reflect on a player with rose tinted glasses and get misty eyed about ambient summers past, but Pete Allen was simply the best amateur wicket keeper I ever played with and in the top two I'd either played with, or against. When I first came to Bury CC almost 35 years ago, he was the first person to welcome me at winter nets, but it wasn't until the summer that I realised the standards he set. In the modern age, he was an old fashioned glove man. He just did his job behind the sticks with the minimum of fuss and like all talented players, made the hard stuff look routine. His batting was no great shakes but he held his place on the purity of his glove work. If there was any discussion about someone else who might keep and score more runs, the bowlers would chip in with the value of that low one-handed catch or a leg side stumping that was worth more than a tidy 20 with the bat. It was always a seismic shock when a chance slipped from his grasp and his work up to the stumps off the quicks caught out many an opening bat taking liberties with their footwork at the crease. As most keepers, he was the constant voice to drive the team and could pass comment with the best of them, but this was not abuse just a sly poke or dig at a failing in someone's technique or a caustic remark, just to keep the batsmen on their toes. The difference was it was never personal and he still could say 'good shot' to the batter if he unfurled something that was easy on the eye and maintained that ethos of the game. I can recall that he always made a point of having a beer with the opposition after the game, something that appears to have drifted from the game, but opposition became friends rather than someone you just played against twice a year. His passing the day of his 60th birthday leaves a void that will be as hard to fill as his gloves were when he decided his knees had enough and he needed to try somewhere else. As all good wicketkeepers, he was the heartbeat of the fielding side and now that heart is finally still he can sit back and watch from above, when the sun is always warm on your back and the beer is always cold. RIP Pete Allen Paul Morris (Bury CC)
The Spirit of Cricket and the Laws of the Game The Spirit of Cricket Cricket owes much of its appeal and enjoyment to the fact that it should be played not only according to the Laws, but also within the Spirit of Cricket. The major responsibility for ensuring fair play rests with the captains, but extends to all players, umpires and, especially in junior cricket, teachers, coaches and parents. • Respect is central to the Spirit of Cricket. • Respect your captain, team-mates, opponents and the authority of the umpires. • Play hard and play fair. • Accept the umpire’s decision. • Create a positive atmosphere by your own conduct, and encourage others to do likewise. • Show self-discipline, even when things go against you. • Congratulate the opposition on their successes, and enjoy those of your own team. • Thank the officials and your opposition at the end of the match, whatever the result. • Cricket is an exciting game that encourages leadership, friendship and teamwork, which brings together people from different nationalities, cultures and religions, especially when played within the Spirit of Cricket. The Laws of the Game In 2018 there was a number of major and minor changes to the Laws of Cricket for the 2018. These are only a summary: • Now written in language applying to all persons, regardless of gender. • The Handled the ball Law has been deleted, with its contents merged into Obstructing the field. • The Lost ball Law has been deleted and is now covered under Dead ball. • Limits placed on the thickness of the edges and the overall depth of the bat. • Injuries hoped to be prevented in a new Law which allow mechanisms tethering the bails to the stumps. • Bowling of deliberate front foot No balls to be treated in same way as deliberate full-tosses.
• A new Law of the game, Law 42, Players’ conduct, is introduced, giving an in-match consequence for poor on-field behaviour. • The Law regarding running out the non-striker has been altered. • 'Bouncing bat’ Law changed, substitutes now allowed to keep wicket and concept of penalty time amended. Law 42 Players’ conduct: This is a new Law that deals specifically with players’ misconduct and is introduced following widespread consultation, surveys with players and umpires and a series of trials of the different levels of sanctions. It is widely accepted that there is a need both to provide the umpires with appropriate on-field sanctions to deal with deteriorating levels of behaviour, not just to report such matters, and that there should be different levels of sanction leading to sending off for acts of violence. Four different levels of offences have been created, with Level 4 being the most serious. The umpires shall determine into which of the Levels an unfair action falls and will apply the appropriate sanction. The four levels of sanction are set as: • Level 1: Warning then 5 penalty runs to the opposition for a repeat offence. • Level 2: 5 Penalty runs to the opposition. • Level 3: Offending player is suspended for a number of overs, depending on the length of the match, plus 5 Penalty runs to the opposition. • Level 4: Offending player is removed from the field for the rest of the match, plus 5 Penalty runs to the opposition. All breaches, including the first offence under Level 1, will attract a report to the Executive of the Team(s) and the Governing Body. For all offences under Level 1-4, the umpire will call Time and summon the relevant captain, who will be informed of the breach of Law and the associated penalty. If appropriate, the umpire will instruct the captain to remove the offending player from the field. New signals for Level 3 and Level 4 offences have been created, which are covered in Law 2.13. The signal for each offence is made to the scorers, not the player, and
starts with the umpire putting an arm out to the side of the body and repeatedly raising it and lowering it. For Level 3 offences, this is followed by raising both hands, all fingers spread, to shoulder height, palms facing towards the scorers. For Level 4 offences, the first part is followed by raising an index finger, held at shoulder height, to the side of the body. In the, hopefully unlikely, event that a Captain refuses to comply with the umpires’ instructions under Level 3 or 4 then they will consider awarding the match if one captain is involved or abandoning the match if both refuse to comply and it is impossible to resolve matters. This is covered in Law 42.6. Law 42.7 clarifies that, if it is the wicket-keeper who is suspended or sent off, a substitute will not be allowed to keep-wicket. It also makes clear that, if the Level 3 or 4 offence is committed by a substitute or a runner, the player for whom they are fielding / running will be affected by the punishment. This system is designed to give the umpires on-field penalties to tackle poor behaviour. However, as with other penalties under the Laws, these new sanctions are intended as deterrents, the presence of which should reduce the frequency of poor behaviour, so that they would only rarely be applied These changes in the majority of cases specifically relate to discipline and the code of conduct. Captains will continue to be responsible for their teams behaviour, on field penalties may well result in the captain having to remove a player from the field of play and penalty runs being awarded by the umpires. It is imperative that all players, members and club officials strictly adhere to these laws.
