After all, you don’t build a clubhouse just for New Year’s Eve, and you don’t build or design a golf course because of the beautiful landscapes Australia offers, just for a tournament. You design a golf course so it will its wonderfully warm people, the fantastic fishing, first and foremost service its members, and then make or, of course, the golf. The Inaugural Australian Open Trophy The trophy for the First Open Golf Championship of Australia, presented by The Australian Golf Club to Englishman, The Hon. Michael Scott, in 1904, was recovered in extraordinary circumstances in 2005, following the playing of the Centenary Championship at Kensington. Donald and Hilary Bowser, an English couple, had acquired the cup at a sale in 1980 in Guernsey, Channel Islands, (where Scott spent his latter years) and when they realized its true significance, approached The Australian Golf Club. The Club duly took possession of the trophy which is now an integral piece of Australia’s golfing heritage. As Mrs. Bowser expressed in a letter, “We are glad the cup is going to its rightful home”. 6

1920 JOE KIRKWOOD Joe Kirkwood won with a score of 290, which at the time was the best score recorded in any national Open, a mark that was to stand for 14 years. 1925 fred popplewelL The Open returned to The Australian with Fred Popplewell, known to his peers as Pop, leading throughout to win by two strokes with 299, despite a closing 79. 1931 ivo whitton Ivo Whitton sang the virtues of steel shafts over hickory after eclipsing young guns Jim Ferrier and Harry Williams to capture his fifth Australian Open at the age of thirty-seven. Whitton rated his closing 73 (out in 33) in a gale as the finest round of golf he had ever played. “I am not as young as I used to be,” said the Victorian amateur, “but steel shafts, I find, make up for that lack 13 of suppleness.”

Back in Sydney, after an opening round 73 he suffered a shoulder injury in a game of tennis with Kerry Packer and fellow professionals Crenshaw and Leitzke. Some midnight treatment from member Dr Merv Cross saw Nicklaus shoot 66 the next morning after which he went on to win the tournament by 6 shots from Crenshaw. 1949 ERIC CREMIN Eric Cremin, one of the most beloved characters in Australian golf, staged a fantastic finish to win on the course where once he had been a caddie. Trailing Ossie Pickworth by five strokes with nine holes to play, he conjured up four successive birdies starting from the 14th hole to close with a course record 68, four under the card. 14

The President’s first drive finished deep in the ti-tree, so he took his customary mulligan and this time his shot finished on the cut grass. As they walked off the tee, Norman turned to his caddie and whispered, “More balls.” The pair got through eighteen holes unscathed, which is more than Tiger Woods managed back at The Australian. He finished with a most un-Tiger like 79 on the opening day. The tournament organisers, who were paying Woods a reputed appearance fee of $300,000, were in a state of shock. Woods showed his mettle by finishing 72, 71, 70 for a share of fifth place. However no-one was going to catch Norman, who plotted his way round the course to a closing 69 to win by eight strokes. 15
