Keeping In Touch 21st May 2021 Dear Parents and Guardian, I would like to thank those that attended the Dr Rob Gordon sessions that were held over the Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The community session was recorded of which we will attempt to transfer to a format that can be posted and shared on facebook. I will send out a xuno message/email to inform you all where it can be found. This will include the sharing through community groups such as Corryong Health and Red Cross to ensure it is spread far and wide. Whilst the information below does not equate to the phenomenal sharing of knowledge that Dr Rob Gordon presented to us, the following outlines some key messages he shared to the community, teaching staff and parent sessions. Rob Gordon commenced with the variation between ‘fear’ and ‘anxiety’ and ‘trauma’. Fear, he uses an analogy of jumping from a snake. Our bodies use adrenalin to allow us to go into survival mode, e.g leaping on to a table. In many cases in our community, it is the quick decision making to evacuate from a fire or stand and fight, etc. Anxiety can be related to the aftermath of the event. Relating to the analogy; we know the snake is gone, but we continue to look around, agitated with the fear of the possibility or the image sometimes created in our mind, of another snake or possibility of another fire. Whilst anxiety is real and cannot be denied, it is important to identify when we are feeling anxiety and what this may be in the form of; tension, heightened emotion, inability to think logically or clearly, inability to process information, etc. When in a state of anxiety we over state a problem or we create the image of a potential problem. However, we may not actually be in danger or be in the present, able to have fix whatever it is which is out of our control (the problem we feel is there). We can feel fear or be impatient, intolerant, we can move to anger, blame or judgement. This can be of others and of self. Dr Rob Gordon explains that the most constructive quality that reduces anxiety is good social support from everywhere. This is where he highlights the point that the responsibility of alleviating community anxiety cannot be with one person or organisation. Together as a community we must be mindful of this, be educated with the same tools and apply it to all. Dr Rob Gordon encourages us to value the space of sitting with someone during their crisis rather than feeling like we have to have the answers and “fix it”. Sitting means creating a safe space where we are listening, supporting, and encouraging them to talk about what they are facing. Judgement and solutions are not required and we must move from this to just being and sitting alongside them in their current state whether this be anxiety, grief or sadness and pain. You can go with them to seek extra support if they need. We have to remember that we are not the specialist in this field but can always reassure someone that we are with them in their state of being. The above is a segway to an abundance of information that Dr Rob Gordon shared. I have asked him to return of which he will. However, I do ask you all to please join us if you have not already. These dates and times are yet to be confirmed. A reminder regarding communication, if you have not already, please ensure you have the Xuno app on your phone or available on your computer. Xuno is our college’s primary communication tool. For processes to be followed through in a timely manner, please ensure you contact the front office directly if your child is absent and not have these go to a particular teacher. Thank you for your understanding. Warm Regards, Fran Heath Corryong College Principal This week also saw the Career Expo held at the college.
