Celebrating our 101st year of service !

                                President’s Letter
We had a frost at our house last night – not a heavy frost, but fall is definitely here. In fact, we are entering
the Holiday Season. Every year it seems to arrive sooner and sooner! For KCYM, things are speeding along
as well.

Our many affiliates are thankful for all of the enthusiasm and help we bring to them. We did lots of
Community Service last month – Judy Bolton led the prep of meals for Boys Hope Girls Hope twice; Meals
on Wheels delivered meals, thanks to Becky Quinn; we collected for Rose Brooks Lingerie Shower, thanks to
Daleen Spradlin; Kristal Thompson organized our last Marillac Library Hours. Due to the reorganization of
Marillac, we are discontinuing this program and won’t be holding our wonderfully fun Marillac Halloween
Party. Melinda Frenzen and Debbie Papa led the fun for an Ozanam Girl Time; Marilyn Tampke organized
meal prep for the Ronald McDonald House; we served at Avenue of Life; packaged diapers for Happy
Bottoms, thanks to Elizabeth Wilson; served at Hope Faith, organized by Rebecca Young; and did Needle &
Craft Work led by Pam Stephenson. Also, Kathy Knopke organized our Marillac Birthday Angels in October.
November will be another big month for Community Service so there are many opportunities to get involved.
Just look in the newsletter under the KCYM Affiliate Activities Pages. Also, don’t miss the Affiliate Spotlight
feature that began last month. Community Service Director Anne Keil and the Project Coordinators are going
to highlight one or more Affiliates each month so that we can learn more about them and, hopefully, decide to
get involved.

In October, we worked on our Fall Club House Cleanup led by Coleen Flathman. The Club House looks
great. Our October Program was Civics/Honoring Day. It was a lovely day with many long-time members
coming back to be feted with roses and to honored. In November, we are looking forward to a program at the
Johnson County Arts and Heritage Center, with lunch following at the Broadmoor Bistro. Should be very
interesting! Dee Ritz and her committee have come up with great programs!

We are looking forward to an evening with Susan Mayer and her “74 Harley Street” jewelry line, as
previewed at our last Business Meeting. Dawn Evans, Ways and Means Chair, is organizing some terrific and
fun fund raisers for KCYM. Holiday pots from Surburban are available to order and gift wrap can still be
ordered online.

Karen Leimer and her Social Committee are working on the Mistletoe Party. It will be held on Friday, Dec 1st
at Deer Creek Country Club. I was out there and it looks like a very pretty venue. Hope to see everyone
there.

As we come into the holidays, be sure to find time to slow down and appreciate all that we have as KCYMs –
multiple opportunities to help others with our Community Service, our friends, our many programs and our
beautiful Club House. It is easy to end up in January blinking your eyes and wondering where the time went.
Have a great November and hope to see you on November 6th at the Program at the Arts and Heritage Center
and at the next Business Meeting on November 27th. Happy Thanksgiving.

KCYM AFFILIATE SPOTLIGHT
                             Spotlight On: The Children’s Place

The mission of The Children’s Place is to nurture and promote healthy development of young children
who have survived abuse, neglect and trauma by providing specialized services and family support,
within a safe and caring environment. Opened in 1978, The Children’s Place was one of the first groups
to understand the concept of child abuse and remains unique within the KC metropolitan area with its
continued focus on young children (ages three months to eight years). Providing both Day Treatment and
Outpatient programs, it is a recognized leader in the prevention and treatment of child abuse and
neglect.

KCYM has three projects with The Children’s Place: Diaper Collection (November), Cookie Decorating
(December) and Flower Planting (April). At the request of the staff, this year’s Cookie Decorating has
been changed to a healthier, ornament-making activity.

                                Spotlight On: Amethyst Place

The mission of Amethyst Place is to support women recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and
their children by providing safe, drug-free housing and individualized services to promote healthy
families. Their programs and therapies are targeted at helping Kansas City’s most vulnerable women
who are reunited with their children and successfully transition to drug-free, independent housing and
healthy community living. Since opening in May 2000, they have grown from 7 to 38 apartments and
have served over 800 women and children. They currently serve 50-60 families a year. Additionally,
Amethyst Place’s “100 Jobs for 100 Moms” program has found successful employment for over 40 moms
since its start in 2013.

On November 18, KCYM will host the third annual Thanksgiving Party for the children and their moms.
There will be lots of craft making and snacks for everyone.

                        Amethyst Place Thanksgiving Party
           November 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon (set-up at 9:00 a.m.)

This event is a fun time for the children and their mothers to enjoy
some special time together and make memories they will be able to
cherish. To date, we have only 9 volunteers and could really use
a few more. Your greatest reward will be seeing the joy on the
faces of these precious children and their moms.

We send our healing thoughts and prayers to Valerie Burke who is recouperating from surgery…get
well quickly! We also need to send many prayers Deb Gill’s way. She is currently trying to get into
a hospital program for a kidney transplant that she needs. This would be her second kidney
transplant…she had a kidney/pancreas transplant 18 years ago. She wants everyone knows that she
will be much more involved in KCYM activities as soon as she gets these health issues taken care
of. Lots of prayers needed!

We send our heartfelt condolences to Kathy Fallon on the sudden death of her sister, Diane.
Thoughts and prayers go out to her. We also remember Virginia “Cissy” Wheelock who passed away
in Minnesota October 5. She was President of Kansas City Young Matrons 1962/1963.

And in the department of baby news…Sue Lund is a new grandmother! Jackson James Lund was
born October 18, 2017 at 3:45 AM weighing in at 7lb 10oz. Parents Andrew and Krystal Lund as well
as the new grandparents are ecstatic with the new little arrival.

messages. I have never received so many cards for a
Birthday which helped me celebrate my birthday not just
one day, but many days. I also thank the two lovely ladies
who took me to lunch. All in all, it was an outstanding
                        birthday.
Also, celebrating the year KCYM turned 100 - what a
grand celebration! What more can I say—I love you all!
                        Thank You!
