Page 8 T h e T a t t l e r The VC Heroes Every cause a hero needs A Polaris star, one that leads To lift our hearts to skyward gaze guide us through the darkest days. Unlike us, in deed and phlegm They steel our will to greater strive That we should grow more like them to keep our dreams alive. Whilst their foot prints fade Still we walk the path they made. A silent voice, yet signs remain for bright young eyes to seek and compass gain. Every son this soil hath flung on hardened ground. The fearless few in purpose found great measure. No backward step No trembling pause They forged a way to win our cause. A nation’s splendid treasure. No pomp, nor bow if they returned. No golden sceptre, nor gilded frames. Our Southern Cross like the hand of God Crowns immortal, all their names. Gerald Taylor 2019
Feb/Mar 2021 Page 9 KEEP SMILING An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening at church service when she was startled by an intruder. As she caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables, she yelled, "STOP! ACTS 2:38!" (Repent and be baptized, in the name of the lord, so that your sins may be forgiven.) The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, "Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell scripture at you." Page 16 T h T h e e T a T a t t t t l l e e r r Burials in a Service Cemetery Local authorities are responsible for the management of Services Cemeteries and approving who may be buried in them and not Veterans’ Affairs (VA). Burial in a Services Cemetery To be buried in a Services Cemetery you must have served as a member of Her Majesty's Forces on certain deployments or be the spouse or partner of someone who has. Eligibility to be buried in a Services Cemetery needs to be approved by your local authority. You may be able to be buried in a Services Cemetery if you: Have Operational Service under the Burial and Cremation Act, or Your spouse or partner has Operational Service under the Burial and Cremation Act. For a list of Operational Service under the Burial and Cremation Act, 1964 Please refer to this website regularly as it does change. www.veteransaffairs.mil.nz . Spouse or partner burial: Some local authorities may only allow the burial of a spouse or partner after the member of Her Majesty's Force's burial.
Feb/Mar 2021 Page 17 Determine if someone qualifies for burial in a services cemetery: There are two steps to determine eligibility. Get a statement of service from NZDF's Personnel, Archives, and Medals (nzdf.pam@nzdf.mil.nz) Check if their service matches a service on the list of operational service. The email needs to: Be sent from a council email address that has a council branded letterhead or a council logo as part of the signature block Have "urgent – funeral" in the subject line Deceased’s full name Date of birth Date of death Service – Navy, Army, or Air Force Include as much other information about the deceased as possible. Check if their service matches a service on the list of operational service. When you receive the statement of service, you will need to compare it against the list of operational service declared under the Burial and Cremation Act 1964. If the deceased’s service is on the list of operational service, they qualify for burial in a services cemetery. If their service is not on the list, they do not qualify. If a veteran is eligible for burial in a services cemetery so is their spouse or partner. If the deceased is a commonwealth veteran, their family will need to check with the relevant authority of the country they served. If still unsure of eligibility contact - MemsandCemsAdmin@nzdf.mil.nz

Page 24 T h e T a t t l e r Christmas Parcels Bring Cheer to the Sinai Our core focus is providing support for serving and retired military personnel. For 80 years the RSA has prepared and dispatched parcels to NZDF personnel deployed away from home over the festive season. Despite its challenges, 2020 was no different and parcels went out to the four corners of the globe. In some cases, they went out to missions where individual personnel would be the only kiwis at a particular location, such as with the UN in South Sudan. However, New Zealand’s biggest deployed contingent is with the Multi-National Force and Observers (MFO) on the Sinai Peninsular. RSA head office received a letter of thanks from the Contingent Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Wright, RNZIR for the parcels and a couple of photos showing contingent members opening their RSA parcels. Thanks to all who were involved in the packing and dispatch of the parcels this year, it’s nice to know our work is appreciated.
Feb/Mar 2021 Page 25 The Government Covid Fund for Military Veterans The $2 million dollar Government covid assistance fund, specifically for military veterans and serving members of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has nearly been exhausted. We received over 450 requests and approximately 30% of applications were directly related to the hardship experienced as a result of the impact of covid. The fund was created by The New Zealand Government in 2020 to provide financial assistance to eligible veterans and was provided in recognition that we were not able to undertake the traditional Poppy Day appeal due to lockdown. The application form has been taken off our website and no further requests for assistance from the fund are being accepted, but those requests received after Christmas are still being reviewed to determine, in each case, what need exists and how it may be able to be met. Welcome to our New Members Nicky Ellis, Caroline Allpress, Jaimee Latham, Carl Te Tone Huia, Norm Mora, Brian White, James Gilmour, Dianne Dinsmore, Norman Cumming, Ian Connor, Ron Creighton, Sharyn Parker, Jo Rusbatch, Roger & Frances McKay, Bill Williams, George DuMez, Norm Pirie, Brent Raisin, Richard Smedley, Bryan Smith Bill Timms
