Page 3 Monthly Cruisin Presidential Emissions President Ed Beatty I work for National Grid and the parade of Nor’easters kept me out straight this March. These storms also seemed to affect everyone’s expectations to get a jump on prepping their cars for the upcoming cruise season after experiencing a seasonably mild February. But, March does get the juices flowing with indoor swap meets like the Norfolk MARCOM and Maynard Winter Blah’s Flea Markets, the annual RTS Model Car show in Taunton, the Larz Anderson Museum events like the Ladies Motor Mouth event, the Autorama World of Wheels in Boston, and the Saturday morning cruise we enjoyed over the snow covered back roads to Classic Motors in Webster with a breakfast stop at the Miss Mendon Diner in Mendon. These activities kept members occupied despite those record snowstorms, power outages and colder than normal March temperatures. Are the crocuses up yet? We can now turn our attention to getting our cars ready for the 2018 cruise season beginning on April 12 as well as starting to look forward to our monthly member meetings turning into cruise adventures with the April 17 monthly meeting being a tour of the new state-of-the-art Herb Chambers Collision Repair Center in Holliston. Don’t show up at the clubhouse or Bass Pro Shops for this one. Drive directly to Holliston where we will meet at 7:00 PM. Details and the map are posted on the club website event calendar. Also, don’t forget to notify John Nunez by Sunday April 15 if you plan to attend the April 29 Cruise to the New England Air Museum at Bradley Filed in Windsor Lock, CT. And mark your calendars for Saturday September 29 for the New England Wireless & Steam Museum tour being arranged by Zeke & Rose Sawayer. Notify Rich Armando about any of new cruise plans you’d like to sponsor as a club event so that he can coordi- nate the club calendar postings on www.masscruisers.com with our webmaster Steve Vining. Finally, I want to recognize the passing of another local race legend, “Tiger” Tom Dunn. Tom and his daughter Debra were regular attendees at our Bass Pro Shops cruises and, when we moved our annual AutoFest Car Show to Tom’s home town of Wrentham at the Wrentham Development Center Fairgrounds, Tom was invited to set up a tent and display all the memorabilia and awards he had garnered over the course of his drag & circle track rac- ing career which included winning the 1964 World Championship Thursday Bi-Weekly Cruise Dates Drag Racing title at Lebanon Valley Speedway in New York. Page 4 By John Buchanan Back in November of 2010, Frank Bryant organized a Saturday morning cruise to Rudy Pastoreck’s Classic Motor Car Company in Webster, MA. along with a breakfast stop at the, new at the time, Miss Mendon Diner at the Imperial Auto dealership stores in Mendon, MA. It’s 7 1/2 years later and Frank pulled off another first-of-the-season cruise to the Classic Mo- tor Car’s auto showroom & warehouse in Webster, now being run by Rudy’s son Chris, along with that absolutely necessary breakfast stop at the Miss Mendon Diner. We packed the new addition to the original 1950 Worcester diner from Newport, VT originally named “Miss New- port” with 26 club members and guests after leave from our Norfolk clubhouse. Nobody got lost despite a few GPS alternate routes were taken. After a hearty breakfast it was off again over the back roads through the snow covered farms fields and rolling hills to Webster and the Classic Motor Car Company where Chris Pastoreck lead us through the showroom/workshop area and the warehouse where the more than 60 antique, classic, customs and hotrods for sale were stored. We won’t say who, but there were a few members almost ready to pull the trigger and buy a few of the current inventory of cars for sale, that included a 1932 Chevrolet Roadster,1961 Corvette, 1963 Buick Riviera, & 1966 Mustang. Thank you Chris for this great opportunity for a winter tour of your collection. https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/?dealer_id=572
Monthly Cruisin Page 5 AutoRama World of Wheels By John Buchanan If you didn’t drive into Boston to see the annual Autorama World of Wheels at the Seaport World Trade Center, I’ve posted a few pics here of my favorites at this year’s March 23-25, 2018 edition as limited space allows. Rick Finamore has pulled together another interesting collection of beautiful and diverse vehicles that roll on wheels that you’ll be hard pressed to find in one place. Of course, it’s always great to see the kids get excited about what they would like to drive when they get to own one of these cars, trucks or bikes in the future. New club member Steve Mirabile and I went to the show on Saturday morning to drop off our 2018 Ford 60 flathead racing motors are always COOL! cruise flyers and in the process came across a potential future cruise up to What’s better than taking a family selfie with a couple the Saugus Iron of cool looking C.O.E.’s in the background Works and the Iron Town Diner. Keep posted! Owner/Driver Paul Zona’s recreation of Arnie Karp’s legendary “Boston Strangler” blown alcohol funny car is always a treat to see in New England Dragway’s display area. Could this be a legendary Jeff Gordon’s future replacement Saugus Iron Town Diner owner George Baretas with his on the Indy & NASCAR circuit? custom wrapped Pontiac Trans-Am using a radical “Iron Plate” motif picked up a 1st Place Award at this year’s World of Wheels. We’ll plan a cruise there. I learned the Fast & Furious 8 “Dodge ICE Charger” has a hol- lowed out Turbonetics turbine engine in the trunk and uses a 550 HP LS motor up front to motivate this movie car’s AWD setup. Legendary customizer Gene Winfield was back in Boston directing his Chop Shop project build on a hot rod pickup truck using local volunteer hot rod custom builders.
Monthly Cruisin Page 6 Women’s Motormouth By Diane Thornton In celebration of International Women’s Day on Thursday March 8, Larz Anderson Museum hosted a night with influential women in motor sports telling stories of road trips, lessons behind the wheel and handlebars, and surprising adventures. Speakers included Jody Perewitz who set 15 land speed records for American twin V motorcycles becoming the fastest woman on American motorcycles. Louise Ann Noeth (aka Land Speed Louise), a professional drag racer with a 250 mph jet dragster and writer/ photographer with her book “Bonneville Salt Flats—The fastest Place on Earth” in its seventh printing. Dawn Hayes, TV actor who hosted the Mass State Lottery for 10 years and is Auto Traders New and Used Cars on YouTube. Dawn is also a motorcycle rider instructor. Sally Dawson, Master Mechanic and owner of Foxy Auto in North Reading who conducts the “Fearless Females: Automotive Car Care Series” at the Larz Anderson Museum. Samantha Briody a recent Franklin Institute graduate, whose college the- sis “Women are Underrepresented in the Automotive Industry” has also authored a featured Boston Globe article “Women Gearing Up for Careers in the Auto Industry”. The event was well attended with at least 50 people in attendance. The speakers were colorful and very engaging with their stories and histories. Granted, a lot has changed for women in my lifetime – and even more so since the wife of Larz Anderson, Isabel, became the first women to get her license in Mas- sachusetts! The couple were car collectors of their time! Their legacy is on display all through the build- ing. The efforts that the current museum staff are putting forth to make the museum more attractive and current are well placed. The five women who shared their stories on March 8 were well chosen and fit neatly into the continuing story of Larz and Isabel Anderson’s dream. I highly suggest that anyone keep an eye out for other talks and events at Larz Anderson Automobile Museum https://larzanderson.org/visit/ They’re doing a top notch job! Word of mouth may be the best advertisement, since I had three members email me that I should attend this particular event! T hank you, friends! It was a fun evening! This was a great take! Questions and answers followed the presentations. L to R: Dawn Hayes (standing), Sally Dawson, Samantha Briody, Jody Perewitz, and Louise Ann Noeth.
Monthly Cruisin Page 7 Marcom Flea Market By John Buchanan Every year the early March MARCOM Flea Market, held at the Holmes Trans- portation property in Norfolk, draws everyone out of their work shops, garag- es and man caves to schmooze, poke around the parts and listen to the lat- est scuttlebutt about what the upcoming 2018 season has to offer. This year we were greeted with the good news that the Great Woods flea market has been resurrected and will be held on the May 19—20 weekend at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield. Hopefully getting those swap meet space reservations in early will get you the same spaces you’ve occupied for the past 20 years. https://greatwoodsswap.com/ Of course you always run into MARCOM outside event conflicts too. This hap- pened with the annual Winter Blahs Auto Parts Swap & Sell Meet at the Elk’s Club in Maynard held later on Sunday March 25 being on the same weekend at the Boston World of Wheels, but I managed to do both this year by going to the Boston W.O.W. on Satur- day. Monthly Cruisin Page 8 ANNUAL MODEL SHOW & SWAP John Buchanan The RTS Expo Club Annual Model Exhibition & Swap Meet, held at the Holiday Inn in Taunton in the Myles Standish Industrial Park off I-495, has been around longer than our Mass Cruisers Auto Club, some 28 years, and one of its founding members is Mass Cruisers member Tom Damon I learned on Sunday March 18 from one of our own club founding members Lou Valentine. This was the first time, for me, attending this show along with a good number of fellow club members. We have recently sponsored a trophy award presentation for the model car our club member judging team selects to recognize the detail and craftsmanship in model building. This year’s sec- tion was Vince LoBosco’s 1957 Maserati 450S. Vince is from Slate Hill, N.Y. and put some 300- 350 hours and 6 months to build the plastic model. As a first time attendee I found the displays ranged from the bizarre to very detailed diorama’s with buildings, land- scapes and multiple model cars and, of course, model kits and parts for everyone’s taste and pocketbook. Our old friend and D.J. “DOC” Camaroe provided the background music and banter while we searched for models of our own rides. I did buy a kit of my “61 Impala SS which I’m going to leave in its original box and I got a lead on another diecast version to replace a damaged one that was in a rollover. 1896 Ford Quadracycle On the Bizarre Side Texaco Service station diorama
