MATT'S MESSAGE ceomatt harris South Newcastle are the first team through to the 2018 Tooheys Newcastle RL grand final while the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs continue their winning run. These are the key outcomes from last weekend?s minor and major semi-finals and set the scene for a fantastic preliminary final this Sunday. Last weekend in the minor semi-final Kurri notched up their sixth win on the trot proving too slick for a battered Central Newcastle. The Bulldogs were clinical in an almost perfect first half going to the break with a commanding 22 to nil lead. Two early tries, including a rare eight point try, in the second half reduced the margin to 10 before Kurri kicked away again to run out 18 point winners. The coalfields club is playing with plenty of self-belief and will head into Sunday?s final looking to continue their golden run for at least one more week. In the major semi-final South Newcastle jumped out to a 14 point lead after ten minutes and threatened to extend that lead on a number of occasions during the first half. Two late tries to the Seagulls just prior to the break reduced the lead to 2 and swung momentum in favour of the home team. A fast paced and high quality second half saw the Lions hold on to a 2 point lead until a late Ryan Glanville try sealed the win for the Merewether club. A crucial win that provides the 2016 major premiers with a guaranteed grand final birth and a week?s rest. Lakes United must regroup for their do-or-die battle with Kurri Kurri this Sunday. Townson Oval will host the penultimate round of football this Sunday with the winner earning the remaining Business Plaza Cup grand final spot. Minor premiers Lakes United need to overcome a confident Bulldogs team looking to return to the grand final stage after a four year hiatus. The clubs have met three times this season with the Seagulls holding a 2-1 advantage. Both teams have attacking threats across the park which bodes for a fast, exciting match-up. The remaining preliminary finals are Macquarie v South Newcastle (reserve grade), Lakes United v Macquarie (open grade), Maitland v Lakes United (under 19s), and Central Newcastle v South Newcastle (LLT). The Lakes United v Kurri Kurri Business Plaza Cup match will be live-streamed by BarTV and can be viewed via our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League). CLUBNEWS CENTRAL BUTCHER BOYS THE BUTCHERS PAPER The loss last week to Kurri brought the curtain down on coach Craig ?Barney?Miller ?s tour of duty with the Butcher Boys. Under Barney?s guidance, last year 1st Grade finished third and LLT played in the Grand Final. This year 1st Grade finished 2nd and made it to the Minor Semi Finals, LLT and Reserves were Minor Premiers, all our 5 teams made the Semis and we won the Club Championship for the first time in 69 years. Thank you to all our coaching staff, Barney, Greg Bannister, Dean Botham, Brett Gilbert, Brad Hafey, Luke Bannister, Gary Thorogood and Joel Sklenar for putting Central in a strong position going forward. A win by Reserve Grade against Macquarie last Sunday put them through to the Grand Final The win was made more praiseworthy by the fact that side contained five U19s and the Butcher Boys played three quarters of the match a man down. Today the Butcher Birds take on South in a must win and they will give it everything they have got. Good luck ladies we know you will do us proud today as you have all year. KURRI KURRI BULLDOGS The Kurri Kurri Bulldogs hosted a day of closely fought semi-finals at the Sylvester Real Estate sportsground with the Bulldogs having two teams playing on the day. It was not to be for the first Kurri team with third grade bowing out after great season one that them on top of the competition for large periods of time. The first grade faced off with Central and formidable opponent with a wealth of experience, Kurri skipped out to and early lead and where never headed. A big congratulations to Craig Miller on his coaching career in Newcastle taking Central to their first club championship in a very long time. Wednesday the Newcastle rugby league presentation was held, a great night with many deserved award winners. The Kurri Kurri Bulldogs would like to congratulate all the award winners and life members in particular Rachel Sharpe who received the LLT players player award Phil Osland and Mick Carr who received life membership. This weekend the Kurri Kurri Bulldogs travel to Townson oval to take on the Lakes, no doubt this will be a tough hard fought affair. To the Bulldogs faithful we look forward to catching up with you on the day, your belief has an astounding effect on who we are. M ACQUARIE SCORPIONS PATRON: M R COL BURNS: Congratulations to the Open grade for making it 8 wins in a row to progress to this weekend?s final against Lakes United at Townsend Oval. A fantastic result to defeat Kurri Bulldogs 16-10 at Kurri. This side has played grand finals every weekend for two months and have come through the pressure, and if anything appear to be getting stronger and playing with great confidence. However the game this weekend against Lakes is going to be another tough encounter, but I am sure they will acquit themselves well and hopefully gain a spot in the grand final the following week. Unfortunately the Under 19s bowed out of the finals last weekend going down 24-22 to a strong Lakes United team. Coach Matt Jordan and everyone associated with the Scorpions could not have been prouder of the way in which the boys stood up last weekend especially in the second half coming from 18-4 down at the halftime break to storm home to just go down. The Reserve Grade put in their worst performance of the season last weekend to go down to Central Newcastle at Cahill Oval, but at least they will have another chance this weekend against South Newcastle and hopefully progress to the grand final. Last weekend they started badly and unfortunately it did not improve as the game continued and a huge improvement is needed and anticipated this weekend. Thank you to all our sponsors, supporters, players, coaching staff and volunteers for the year. It has been a difficult one, but thank you for your efforts and looking forward to your continued support in 2019. LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS Seagu lls Hist or y.... Lakes United and Kurri Kurri have shared the spoils when it comes to the Newcastle Rugby League Final. The Bulldogs won the first encounter in 1982 (25-18); the Seagulls won the next two Finals in 1984 (28-14) and 1992 (24-8). The most recent Final was won 40-12 by Kurri in 1993. All four of these matches were fiercely competitive and the 2018 version will be no different.
