Part of The Xavier Catholic Education Trust January 2019 This newsletter can be viewed on our website: www.stcharlesb.surrey.sch.uk Information regarding the Xavier Catholic Education Trust can be viewed at: www.xaviercet.org.uk Designated Safeguarding Leaders for the school are Mr Holt and Mrs Flower This newsletter is sent via email only, so please ensure that we have your correct details. This saves on paper and administration. However, if you would still like to have a paper copy, please let Mrs Martin/Mrs McNab know and they will ensure that you receive one. It is important that parents continue to receive and read this newsletter as it is the main communication channel for the school. Welcome back and Happy New Year to you all. The end of term was as eventful as ever and we are still attempting to get the glitter out of the carpet despite our best efforts! The last few weeks of term are always magical and it is fair to say that the children, PTA and staff delivered their fair share of magic! We reminded the children of the meaning of Advent and had an enjoyable balance of activities. The Christmas craft days were a great success and were thoroughly enjoyed by the children who had the opportunity to work with pupils from other year groups. The Christmas performances were very special and sent out the true message of Christmas. An amazing £690 was raised for two causes, namely the school and Parishes designated charity The Clubhouse Project (a charity supporting local young people with learning difficulties). Thank you for your generosity. The children, as always, were a credit to us and I was very proud of them all, they really did sing their hearts out! Our Nursery children showed courage as ever performing at the age of 3 or 4 and our children also sent joy to others when singing at various community events. On a personal note, I would like to thank you for your kind words of support and Christmas gifts. Thank you also to the dedicated group of parents who help in the school and for the work of the PTA; you make this school such a special place. Events such as the Secret Santa and Christmas Fair take a huge amount of time and organisation and I am truly humbled by the generosity of the school community. Finally, well done to our willing band of staff and volunteer ‘knitters’ who knitted Christmas gifts, raising a whopping £175 for The Clubhouse Project. 1
Term Dates The Xavier Catholic Education Trust sets the term dates, thus ensuring that there is continuity between schools within the MAT. These dates are displayed at the end of this newsletter. Please remember that we have a joint MAT INSET training day on 13th March 2019 which is a Wednesday. Value of the Month This month’s value is Honesty: ‘tell the truth to others and yourself.’ I am always very proud of the honesty of our children, especially when they know they may be in the wrong. Please praise your children for being honest, no matter how cross or frustrated you may be feeling at the time! Honesty is the best policy and it is a value that will gain the respect of others. Last month’s value was Peace and our pupils took part in a number of local community events, bringing the true meaning of Christmas to those around them. On the note of values and helping others, thank you for your wonderful response to our Foodbank appeal. The organiser of the Chertsey Foodbank was once again overwhelmed by your generosity, with a huge number of boxes of special Christmas food items being donated. We will continue to repeat the gesture as it makes such a difference. Sunday Times 2018 School League Tables Whilst school league tables should always be treated with an element of caution and realism, it was still good to be recognised once again for outstanding academic attainment here at St Charles. In December, the 2018 school performance tables were released and the school has performed extremely well with some of the best results in Surrey. Recently, the Sunday Times placed us as one of the top 250 Primary schools in the country (based on 2017 figures). As an inclusive school, results such as these may not always be possible and we also pride ourselves on achievements beyond ‘SATs’ but even so it is testament to the staff, pupils and you as parents that we produce such well-rounded young people. 100% attendance Well done to the 86 pupils who achieved 100% attendance this term. 2
School Closures With the possibility of inclement weather this winter, I would like to draw your attention to our emergency closure procedures. Should the school need to close, the local authority will be informed and an update placed on the Surrey Alert website www.surreyalert.info, as well as Radio Jackie 107.8 fm. Our website will also give up to date information. We will aim to email/text parents/class reps, where appropriate. I would recommend to parents that the best place to find out whether the school will need to close will be via our school website. Please see an aide memoire regarding school closures added to the end of this newsletter. I will always make every effort to keep the school open, but it will be dependent on appropriate staffing ratios and on site health and safety arrangements. I cannot guarantee the safety of the paths and roads approaching the school and it is the responsibility of parents to decide whether it is safe to travel. I hope that by adding this message to the newsletter we will have fine weather! Home School Link Worker We are in the process of confirming the services of a new Home School Link worker and hope to have someone in place by the end of the month. Date for the Diary for Parents- Internet Safety Weybridge Headteachers have arranged an Online Safety Information Session for parents. The session will be held at St James at 7 pm on 26th February 2019. Please can you contact the school office in person or email info@stcharlesb.surrey.sch.uk to reserve a place. Places need to be confirmed with St James by Monday 11th February. I strongly urge as many parents as possible to attend, this is such an important area of parenting that can often be overlooked. The Surrey Local Offer can help you to • find services and support for yourself or someone you care for with Special Educational Needs and/or a Disability (SEND) • access a wide range of information and advice about SEND • talk to other families online and share SEND experiences • talk to other families online and share • give your feedback on SEND services and the Local Offer website Thank you Thank you to nursery parent Mr Bradshaw and his team for helping with a number of DIY 3
jobs last month. It was a very generous offer and much appreciated. Primary School Applications The closing date for state primary school applications for September 2019 is January 15th 2019 but the expectation is that applications will be made online to Surrey County Council and well in advance of the deadline. If applying to a Catholic school, a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) will be required to indicate that you are a Catholic family, to be returned to the individual school. The St Charles Borromeo SIF is available on the school’s website or from the school office. Absence during Term Time: A Reminder Every day at school is important and regular attendance is the key to a confident and successful child. Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. In light of this parents should not request absence for holidays during term time, including taking the last day of term to avoid costs/charges. Any requests such as these will not be authorised and may lead to a fine being issued by the local authority. However, there may be times when there is a genuine need to take time off during term time and we would wish to continue to help families with a proven need. Our attendance figures will be scrutinised and if families can adhere to our request not to take leave unless there are exceptional circumstances, then we may not have to adopt a zero tolerance approach. Every school day missed by our school children is a lost opportunity and we as a school are keen to ensure that we meet a very challenging target of 3.6% authorised absence by the Local Authority. This equates to slightly less than 7 days absence per child per academic year. Last year a large number of absences were not authorised for various reasons and we need to reduce the number of absences to support families with a genuine need. In light of the above, I need to stress that I have always tried to give plenty of notice regarding term dates, so that parents have sufficient time to make their holiday arrangements. I must also stress that the above stipulations do not include general illness, funerals or family crises which are unavoidable and will always be treated sympathetically. If your child is unwell and unable to attend school please leave a message on our absence line (option 1) with your child’s name and reason for absence each day of absence. I trust that you will support me with this matter and would like to reiterate that any requests for term time absence must be avoided and in the unlikely event that absence is required, an appointment must be made with me via the school office to discuss the circumstances. The school’s attendance policy can be found on the school website. Chess Club and Cross Country Club A reminder that chess club and cross country will commence again on 11th January. Donations may be made online under ‘Spring 19 Ches’ and ‘Spring 19 Cross Country’. Sports News We have a number of events coming up so watch this space….however, it is with deep regret to those that have been involved in the Bracknell Cross Country Relay events in the past, that due to council restructuring and other factors, the event will no longer be taking place. 4
Thank you to the outstanding support from Chris Vaal and Bracknell Forest Borough Council over the past 21 years, with the support of gold medallist athlete Julian Goater, they managed to introduce the supposedly unpopular sport of cross-country running to literally thousands of young people, in over 50 schools. We benefitted so much from the experience, inspiring our runners to be the best that they can be, with a couple of former students moving on to County standard in cross country and even onto national events. #BBCOwnit The BBC has launched an online safety website for 9-12 year olds, Own It, to help them navigate life online. The site contains videos and content to equip children with the skills to make the most out of the online world without the danger of harm. Tony Hall, BBC Director-General, told the Children’s Global Media Summit in Manchester: “It’s aimed at an age group we know are particularly affected by the day-to-day pressures and dilemmas of life online. And it offers them guidance on what they say they want help with.” “It’s called ‘Own it’, because it’s there to help them take control and be the boss of their online lives.” Own it has been developed in partnership with a range of organisations in the field of child internet safety as well as expert advisors in the field. Schools may find it useful to share the website with pupils and parents or to use the content/videos to spark discussion. The Own It app will be available in early 2019 and will use machine-learning to support young people beginning to use the internet and social media. Assistance for young people includes: considering how the use of certain words could be perceived by others; deciding whether to share personal information on social media; understanding how phone use late at night can affect wellbeing. Further information: https://www.bbc.com/ownit/about-us/what-is-own-it Internet Safety Advice I would like to remind you of a link that gives good advice regarding how to stay safe online: https://www.internetmatters.org/hub/guidance/e-safety-checklist-getting-your-kids-tech- devices-set-up-safe/ Family Support I would like to remind you that Walton Charity can support local families with grants towards the cost of: Essential household items not funded by the Surrey Local Assistance Scheme. Contribution towards utility arrears School trips, school uniform (including school shoes and winter coats), extra curricular / out of school activities or school holiday clubs. Course fees and other associated costs (such as travel, equipment, accreditation or childcare for those who are studying) Transport costs Families should be referred by a local organisation or agency, or other professional body except for school uniform applications, for which they can apply to Walton Charity direct. For more information about Walton Charity Individual Grants, please contact Amina Lawson the Individual Grants Manager on 0203 328 0246 or Nikki Howard on 0203 195 8286. 5
You can also email them at alawson@waltoncharity.org.uk or nhoward@waltoncharity.org.uk. Copies of all relevant forms, can be found on website – www.waltoncharity.org.uk Additional Funding Available, Can You Help? The Government gives money to schools to help children from lower income families to do their very best. The funding is called ‘Pupil Premium’ and for every child registered, St Charles will get over £1,000 this year. This money can then be used towards improving additional support for your child and other children. How does it work? First, check if you qualify – it is not just if you are unemployed. You must be in receipt of one of the following: Prior to April 2018, children qualified for free school meals – and accordingly pupil premium – if you received any of the following benefits: Income support Income-based jobseekers’ allowance Income-related employment and support allowance Support under Part IV of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 The guaranteed element of state pension credit Child tax credit, provided that you are not also entitled to working tax credit and have an annual gross income of £16,190 or less These benefits have now been rolled into a single benefit, called Universal Credit. From April 2018, free school meals and pupil premium will only be allocated to pupils with a family income under £7400 (net) per year. If any of the above applies, please contact the school office and we will tell you what you need to do to register your child as eligible. Since September 2014, all children in Reception and Years 1 and 2 have qualified for free school meals, regardless of their family income, but only the children who would qualify for free meals under the above income-based criteria will receive the pupil premium. If your child qualifies for free school meals, it’s important that you tell us – even if they take a packed lunch – as this enables us to claim pupil premium. If this applies to you, please let us know, no one will know you have registered and it will not affect any other benefits you are claiming. Please speak to the school office in confidence for further information. The office can check your eligibility if you are not sure. PTA Newsletter 6
PTA January Newsletter We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Christmas holiday! After a very busy end to the Autumn Term you’ll be pleased to know that the Spring Term is typically a little quieter. A massive thank you to everyone who contributed and participated during all the activities last term…. It really was humbling and overwhelming to witness the support of so many from the school community. PTA Coffee Morning and Spring Term meeting – January 18th 9:15 am We would like to invite you all to our PTA Coffee Morning and Meeting to present to you the amazing results achieved by the different teams during the Autumn term. We will also discuss the activities planned for the following terms. It would be great to see as many of you there as possible! Events One date for your diaries is the first social of the new year, the Quiz Night taking place on Friday 8th March, which is always a fun and fantastic event. For the children we will also have the Secret Cinema on Friday 25th January as well as the School Disco on Wednesday 13th February for both KS1 and KS2. There will be a second-hand uniform sale to coincide with parents evening (w/c 11th February) as well as periodic coffee mornings and cake sales organised by each class year. Volunteers required urgently! Our Summer Fete, one of our main fundraising events, is planned for June 30th and we are still looking for a group of two or more volunteers to help us run it this year. The fare is organised by distributing all the different stalls among all the class years and is very straight forward to run. Please put your name forward and the previous organisers, as well as John and I, will support you all the way to help you make it another success! We are also looking for other volunteer(s) to support us in our Sponsorship team. Sarah Sloman and Michelle Phillips did an extraordinary job during the Autumn Term but now need to step down. We already have one main sponsor, but we need additional local business support, in any way possible, for our next events. As mentioned above, John and I are here to support you. Lottobot (St Charles PTA lottery) Want to join Lottobot? Please email the PTA or ask your class rep to obtain a form. Remember… you’ve got to be in it to win it! And a very big THANK YOU to all Lottobot members for your continued support and to Trudy Moody for looking after this initiative. Birthday Book Club: Thank you to all those who contributed to this in the last term, a total of £70 donated for new books for the school library! Reception Mariana and Emma Y1 Joshua Y2 Bella, Sophia, Felix Y3 Thomas, Nathan Y5 Grace 7
Y6 Feile, Julie If you’re interested in joining the ‘Birthday Book Club’ please email pta@stcharlesb.surrey.sch.uk or speak to Susan Dyball to obtain a form. Letters will be issued this week to those children who celebrate their birthdays in January. Thank you Susan for continuing to run this initiative. Easy fundraising If you haven’t signed up yet, please consider doing so. And for those of us who are already signed up a gentle reminder to keep using it. It’s such an easy way to raise money for the school! In the last month Easy fundraising earned us £96.55 – thank you to all those who contributed to this. Match funding This is another easy way in which we can maximise the money raised by PTA events – and is well suited for the smaller events, such as the Disco and Secret Cinema. What is match funding? “Match giving or match funding is a simple way of maximising the fundraising efforts of your individual PTA volunteers. It is an informal albeit corporate arrangement between a company and their employee. Not all companies offer matched funding but those that do will pledge a sum of money relating to the amount their employee has raised for or donated to the charity of their choice. Some organisations will match fund on a £ for £ basis, others will stipulate what they are prepared to give.” Unfortunately, there isn’t a pre-defined list of companies who sign up for this – it’s simply a case of asking. Friends of St Charles Are you, or do you know of, a local business who offers discounts or other incentives to the St Charles community? Would you like to incentivise the local community by offering a discount or other incentive which we can advertise to our parents/carers? We are looking to collate a database accessible to all in the school of local shops, restaurants, businesses etc. who come recommended by other parents/carers and also who might offer discounts to the St Charles community. We already have a few contacts and would be looking to add to this and have someone who would be happy to hold and edit the list. Please get in touch if you are either a local business offering discounts to your fellow parents/carers or you would like to help to collate the list – again get in touch via email with the details to pta@stcharlesb.surrey.sch.uk We can confirm the following discounts with many thanks to our local businesses: PowerBespoke have begun supporting many of our events through sponsorship and joint promotions and are going one step further by offering the families of children at St Charles Borromeo School an opportunity to help raise substantial funds for the school when selling through them or simply referring them to others. Upon legal completion of a sale of a local property, PowerBespoke will give the seller 5% discount off their fee and will also donate 5% of their fee as CASH BACK to the School PTA Fund. On top of this, PowerBespoke will pay an additional £500 to our PTA Fund after 5 successful referrals. Terms and conditions apply, please feel free to ask Roberto Ghirardani for more details. He is a parent at the School and is PowerBespoke’s Weybridge Area Specialist. If you know of somebody who is thinking of selling, please send them the following referral link: 8
https://powerbespoke.referralrock.com/l/PBSTCHARLES/ Weybridge Sports kindly offer a 10% discount to all St Charles parents across their range of products. Don’t forget to sign up to the St Charles PTA facebook page! Kate Anderson is doing a fabulous job posting updates on Facebook – making sure we all know what’s happening and when. If you’re not currently linked into our Facebook page and would like to be, please email the PTA (PTA@stcharlesb.surrey.sch.uk) and we will organise this for you. Below are details of procedures to be followed in the event of an emergency school closure. These are details we send from time to time so I urge you to keep them in a safe place. School closure is never taken lightly and is rare. However, I must stress that many of our staff travel some distance to school and the problems are often greater for them than for families who live much closer. We will always make every effort to keep the school open and it is always the decision of the parent as to whether it is safe to travel to school. The school cannot be responsible for roads and pathways approaching the school. Yours sincerely Stephen Holt Procedure to be followed in the event of an Emergency School Closure If there is any doubt in a parents mind about whether the school may be closed they are asked to follow the following routes of enquiring in the order listed. 1. Check your e.mails/text between 7.30 a.m. and 8.00 a.m. There is also the possibility that, class reps will also text you if they have your details. 2. Check St Charles Borromeo’s web-site homepage at www.stcharlesb.surrey.sch.uk from 7.30 a.m. If a decision is made earlier than this, information may be available from as early as 7am. 3. Parents should tune radios into Radio Jackie on 107.8 FM. The school will notify this station in the event of an emergency closure. Its web site is www.radiojackie.com 4. Check the Surrey County Council web-site which is https://www.surreycc.gov.uk/schools-and-learning/schools/school-closures However, in previous years, this site has taken time to update information. 5. Only telephone the school on 01932 842617 as a last resort as the office may not be open. Please note this is your last option and should only be used if you cannot access any of the information above. PLEASE KEEP THIS INFORMATION IN A SAFE PLACE 13
