This handbook will provide you with information regarding the procedures and expectations of students at Papamoa College, and help you to settle into school life. I wish you all the best for a great year and I look forward to getting to know you and helping you progress on your learning journey. Regards Mr Steve Lindsey Principal Access to Learning Commons The Learning Commons’ are open for student use from 8.30am. All students are expected to be in their learning commons ready for Admin time at 8.40am. Accidents and Illness Accidents If you witness or have an accident at school, you must inform the closest staff member who will organise the necessary first aid. Sickness If you are unwell during class time, you should inform your teacher who may send you to Student Services with a note. If it is determined that you need to go home, reception staff will contact your parents. Do not contact your parents directly. For safety reasons, students will not be allowed to go home to an empty house. Medication Any prescription medication that needs to be taken during the day will be held at Student Services. If you are required to take medication throughout the day, parents must provide written permission, including instructions for the school to administer the medication. Exit the building as quickly and safely as possible during a fire evacuation. Every room has a map that shows you the best way to go to the assembly area, which is on the far side of field 1. Do not take your belongings with you; leave them in your class. If a tsunami alarm sounds, move immediately to the upper floor. Always follow the instructions of the teachers in the event of an emergency situation. Facilities at Papamoa College • 8 x Learning Commons • Senior School Building • Full-court gymnasium • Food & Materials Technology Rooms • Performing Arts Centre that includes: a theatre, dance studio, music rooms • Sound proof recording room • Hard court and field facilities • Library and Information Centre • Campus Café • Specialist Senior Science labs and Art studios Homework Any homework assigned for students will be an extension of your learning. You may be further exploring issues you are working on, participating in an online discussion, or developing your current projects and tasks. Other aspects of homework may involve discussions with members of your family or the community. ICT and Cybersafety ICT is integrated into all your classroom and learning programmes and there will be many opportunities to use a wide variety of ICT skills and equipment. We encourage you to bring your own device (BYOD), so that you have greater access to ICT. You can use any type of laptop or tablet on our network. If you would like to get a device to support learning but are unsure which one to get, then our website has a list of recommendations. 8
At the time of your enrolment, you signed the cyber-safety agreement. You must never share your password or let anyone else know your personal details. You are responsible for all digital resources used and any network activity, once you are logged on to the network. It is very important that you look after all ICT equipment with care and report any damage to your teacher immediately. Identification Cards - ID card Your identification card is very important as it identifies you as a student of Papamoa College and allows you access to resources on campus. You will require it to take out library books, use laptops or cameras and as a form of identification to board school buses or to bring a motor vehicle to school. You will also need it to gain access to the school photocopiers. If you lose your card you will need to see Reception for a replacement card at a cost of $5.00. Learning Commons Structure – Middle School Students will belong to a Learning Commons throughout their time in the Middle School. The benefits of this are: o Strong relationships and a sense of belonging within the Learning Commons. o Continuation of composite class environment that many students are already used to. o Older students will have the opportunity to be mentors and leaders. o Learning with a wide range of students and staff. o The chance to be part of an exciting and caring community within a larger community. The Middle School at Papamoa College is divided into Lower Middle School (Years 7 & 8) and Upper Middle School (Years 9 & 10). Both the Lower and Upper Middle Schools focus on the specific developmental and learning needs of the relevant students. Senior School Structure The Senior School retains aspects of the Middle School Learning Communities. Instead of a Learning Commons structure, students belong to Pathway classes. The teacher of their Pathway class is the academic mentor of the students in that class, helping them to set and maintain goals and to choose appropriate future pathways. Library and Information Centre The Library and Information Centre will be mobile for the first part of 2018. 9
Mobile Phones and other devices You are encouraged to bring your own devices such as laptops, iPads, tablets etc to school to use as tools to support you learning. Limited storage is available in each learning area for student devices. The school does not accept any responsibility for damage or theft of personal equipment etc. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure items are kept safe. Mobile phones are permitted to be brought to school, but must not be used in class unless the teacher has given you permission. Mobile phones must be switched off as a courtesy to other learners. Any students found to be abusing this, will have their device removed and it will need to be collected from reception by a parent/guardian. Listening to music is allowed once it has been negotiated between you student and your teacher. Money at School Payment for fees and other items can be made at Student Services before school. You should not carry large amounts of money with you throughout the day. No responsibility will be accepted for items that are lost. No payments are to be made to Student Services during class time. Out of Bounds Areas The campus is large enough to provide a variety of different spaces for students. All students should stay outside before school, and at interval and lunchtimes, unless a teacher has given permission to be inside. The staff lounge, staff workspaces, storage areas, administration area and staff toilets are out of bounds. The front of the school is out of bounds during interval and lunchtime. The boundary on the fields is at the bottom of the bund that borders Gordon Spratt Reserve. The far side of Field 2 is out of bounds during lunchtime. 10
Physical Education and Sport You are expected to wear your PE gear for Physical Education. You will also be expected to wear PE gear during lunchtime sports events. Your teacher may also require you to wear your PE gear during learning commons physical activity. If you cannot participate in Physical Education because you are unwell or injured (or another legitimate reason) you need to bring a note from home. Do not wear your PE gear to and from school. Photocopying Photocopiers are available in each learning commons. You should always consider whether it is necessary before going ahead with printing and photocopying. Think of the environment and consider storing the document in digital form. If you do decide to photocopy, you must first seek the permission of your teacher. This will require you to explain what you would like to photocopy and the reason for copying, as all photocopying should be for school purposes only. If printing from a computer, you should also seek the permission of your teacher before printing. All printing will be logged against your name when you log onto the network. Students top up their photocopying account in $5.00 increments. Rubbish, Recycling and Environment We are all responsible for our environment and we will all work together to care for it. Rubbish and recycling bins are available for you to dispose of your waste and paper in a responsible way. Learning Commons’ duty teams will be responsible for the removal of these bins. A student environmental group will operate to promote and develop our sustainable and eco-friendly environment. Please remember to finish your lunch and dispose of the rubbish before using the fields at intervals and lunch times.
