RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS Being a representative basketball player requires commitment from both players and parents. The information below outlines some of the key expectations and responsibilities of Chelsea Gulls rep players and their parents. Team Manager Each team will be required to appoint a Team Manager from the parent group. The Team Manager is responsible for filling out and collection of money from parents to pay for the team sheet. Please ensure you approach your Team Manager for payments and when it your turn to score as it is not the Team Managers job to chase you. The Team Manager is an excellent resource for information and he/she may be able to assist with many enquiries you may have as new team member. Big V Duty Big V is the senior competition and Chelsea Gulls have both a men’s and women’s Big V team as well as Youth League teams.
Junior Gulls teams are allocated a minimum of 2 Big V games each season where they have to attend and support the smooth running of the competition. Responsibilities while on Big V duty include activities such as • serving food/beverages to the score bench • setting up the after-game food for the Big V players • keeping spectators off the courts • sweeping/mopping the courts during the game (junior players only, not parents) ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR PARENTS Scoring Parents are expected to participate in a team scoring roster. How often you have to score will depend on how many players are in the team and how many parents score for each game. • The team manager will organise the scoring roster and can provide links to training videos and resources to support your knowledge/confidence with scoring • If you are unable to score when rostered to do so, it is your responsibility to organise a swap with one of the other parents (you will have a team contact list). Behavioural technical Any behavioural technical fouls given to a player, coach or spectator will first be met with a meeting from our DOC. Each behavioural technical foul from that point on will be met with a 1 week suspension from the club separate from any penalty issued by the VJBL. Dealing with issues/complaints Representative Basketball is considered an elite development program and as such does not always operate with the same guidelines as domestic competitions, in particular around court time. Court time is at the discretion of the coach and may be subject to: • The level of competition • The role of the player in each game and; • The importance of the game. Parents who have concerns about their child should initially discuss this the matter with the coach or assistant coach, however there are processes that need to be adhered to at all times: • Coaches are not to approached with your concerns immediately after a game as this is not an appropriate time • Make arrangements via the Team Manager to speak to the coach at the next training session • Should you still have concerns or do not think that a satisfactory conclusion has been reached then the matter should be referred to the Director of Coaching. Finally, Chelsea Basketball has its own grievance process where matters can be resolved. All complaints must be put in writing or they will not be considered. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR PLAYERS Behavioural technical Any behavioural technical fouls given to a player, coach or spectator will first be met with a meeting from our DOC. Each behavioural technical foul from that point on will be met with a 1 week suspension from the club separate from any penalty issued by the VJBL.
Player/Coach assessments Players will be assessed throughout the season so they can monitor their development. The dates are marked in our calendar as March 8th for the mid-year and August 6th for the end of season evaluation. Training Times and days For every player making a 1’s and 2’s team, you will have one morning training per week for the first 5 weeks (week of October 21st to November 18th) to prepare for grading phase. After grading phase 1, the 1’s and 2’s teams will be expected to also attend 3 shooting sessions through grading phase 2 (Feb 1st, 8th and 14th). Extra training Players seeking extra seek their coaches, team managers or DOC for advice. The club has a development program to give the players the tools to grow and develop.
