7th CASPAM Regional Student Olympiad of Mathematics CRSOM-7 2020 26th March 2020 INTRODUCTION Centre for Advanced Studies in Pure and Applied Mathematics (CASPAM), Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Multan, has planned to organize its traditional student Olympiad with title: 7th CASPAM Regional Student Olympiad of Mathematics (CRSOM-7, 2020) at Jinnah Auditorium, BZU on Thursday March 26, 2020. 7th CASPAM Regional Student Olympiad of Mathematics (CRSOM-7, 2020) will be the 7th event in the series to be organized by CASPAM and is probably quite a unique event of its kind on mathematical sciences in Pakistan. CRSOM-(1-6) were held successfully in March 2014, April 2015, May 2016, April 2017, April 2018 and April 2019 respectively, in collaboration with National Mathematical Society of Pakistan (NMSP). In each CRSOM over 600 Mathematics students and faculty members participated, collectively engaging over 25 institutions nationwide. Like previously, a variety of competitions among the contestants only from the classes of MSc Mathematics and BS Mathematics (Semester 5 to 8) would be conducted during the event. Key activities include: Game 1: Singles’ Qualifying round, Game 2: Singles’ Championship (Problem Solving Tests among the top 25 winners of Game 1), Game 3: Open House Quiz Gala, Game 4: Teams’ Championship, and Game 5: Poster Competition on the applications of MATHEMATICS DRIVES CAREERS. An announcement poster, games/competitions format, and a tentative schedule for your kind consideration have been attached herewith. The relevant details can also be downloaded from caspam.bzu.edu.pk or from www.bzu.edu.pk/crsom. The intended impact (that is experienced as well from CRSOM-(1-6)) is to bring motivation and excitement among the students of Mathematics for enhancing and expressing their learning of mathematical sciences at both individual and teams scale. The students of MSc/BS Mathematics may be encouraged and motivated to participate in this event to make it fruitful in promoting learning of mathematics in the region through the spirit of competition. It may be noted that only the students of the current classes of MSc Mathematics and BS Mathematics (Semester 5 to 8) at any participating institute in Pakistan are eligible to contest in any game. OLYMPIAD FORMAT (CRSOM-7, 26th March 2020) Objective: To promote the learning of mathematics in the region. Eligible Contestants/Participants: Current students of MSc Mathematics and BS Mathematics (Semester 5 to 8) at any educational institution of Pakistan are eligible to attend the Olympiad. However, to cultivate and promote the tradition, the initiator and custodian of the Olympiad (CASPAM, BZU) allows its junior students to participate in the competitions. The CASPAM students of classes lower than BS Sem 5 will not be considered as winners of any of Game-1, Game-2 or Game-4. Olympiad Focus: Assessment of basic degree level mathematical knowledge and skills (taught in BSc and the first four semesters of BS Mathematics) with weights as: Calculus (50%), Algebra (25%), and Miscellaneous (25%). Basic information about the Games: Game Type Composition 50-minute game for the individual contestants comprising 25 MCQs. (A maximum of 400 students would be considered as Singles’ Qualifying GAME 1 contestants. In case of more than 400 applicants, priority will Round be given to the students of ending semesters/year of BS/MSc. Top 25 contestants would qualify for the Game 2). Competition of the top 25 individuals of GAME 1 for the 3 GAME 2 Singles’ Championship medals (1 hour test of problem solving skills). Open house game like a gala for all the audience with on-spot GAME 3 Marathon for all prizes. Quiz based contest of 4-member teams for the 3 medals. (A screening test consisting of 20 MCQs will be conducted for GAME 4 Teams’ Championship short-listing the teams. Top 8 teams would qualify for the Finals of Game 4). Competition of the posters submitted by the interested GAME 5 Poster Competition candidate/s individually or in a group of 2 on the THEME Mathematics in Security. Important Points: A team of 3 judges/referees would decide the correctness of questions/answers of team quizzes. Use of any kind of unfair means (especially getting direct support/signal from someone during the quizzes of Teams championship) may lead to disqualification from the game. A student can take part in any number of games. The organizing committee of the Olympiad reserves the right to resolve any issue. Its decision will be final and considered unchallengeable on any issue raised. Page 2 of 6
