After this session you will be given the 2021 Course Selection Form which will be due to Senior School by 10 August, 2020. The aim of this session is to support you to make the most informed decision about which 5 VCE subjects you will continue with in 2021.
Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) Studies used for the ATAR- o All VCE Unit 3 & 4 sequences o Vocational Education and Training (VET) Programs with Unit 3 and 4 sequences o Approved Higher Education studies
AUSTRALIAN TERTIARY ADMISSIONS RANK (ATAR) To qualify- o Qualify for the VCE (16 Units) o Achieve study scores in at least four Unit 3 and 4 VCE studies, including one from the English group Calculation of the ATAR- Developed from an aggregate produced by adding the results for up to 6 studies as follows: o The ATAR subject score in 1 of English, Literature or English Language o The next best 3 scaled study scores (together with English study make up the primary four o 10% of any fifth and sixth permissible scores that are available
RESTRICTIONS ON STUDIES IN THE ATAR http://www.vtac.edu.au/files/pdf/publications/fact_sheets/Study_area_groupings_fact_sheet.pdf In each of the study areas of: For example… o English [English; English Language; Literature] o Mathematics[Further Maths; MM; Specialist Maths] At most TWO results from the same study group can contribute to the primary four At most THREE results from the same study group can contribute to the ATAR, be they VCE results, Higher Education study results or VET

Scaling VCE study scores and the ATAR By using ATAR subject scores, fair comparisons can be made of students’ achievements over all their studies, regardless of the studies they have taken. **Students can choose studies they like or are good at** Student belief: To achieve best possible ATAR →need to choose studies that are scaled up ↓ Not true ↓ Many students achieve high ATAR subject scores for studies that are scaled down & achieve a lower ATAR for subjects that have been scaled up
What is VET in Schools? VET delivered to secondary students refers to Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses undertaken as part of school studies. FEATURES OF VET • It combines senior school studies and accredited vocational education and training • Enables students to complete a nationally recognised vocational qualification (e.g. Certificate II in Hospitality) and a senior school certificate (VCE/VCAL) at the same time • Allows a student to go directly into employment or receive credit towards further vocational training • Develops students’ employability and industry-specific skills • It is a vocationally oriented school program designed to meet the needs of industry
HOW DOES VET WORK? A VET in Schools program is usually made up of: Units of Competency: Delivered by a registered training organisation (e.g. TAFE), the student’s school or another school close by. Structured Workplace Learning: (may be a requirement- refer to Study Design) o This involves an employer accepting a student on a one day a week basis or a one-week block. o Structured workplace learning enables the student to demonstrate acquired skills and knowledge in an industry setting. o During the work placement, a student will have specific tasks to undertake in order to demonstrate competence. o Students will be regularly monitored and may be assessed on the job
VET PROGRAMS CONTRIBUTION TO THE VCE o VCE VET with Unit 3 and 4 sequences with scored assessment: o Study scores are scaled and may be included in the calculation of the ATAR aggregate o Where a scored assessment is available and when a student decides not to sit this, no increment is available (qualify for a certificate only with no ATAR contribution) Sample VET courses: • Business • Community Services • Creative and Digital Media (screen and media) • Dance • Engineering Studies • Furniture Making Pathways • Allied Health Assistance • Hospitality • Digital Media and Technology • Information Digital Media and Technology • Laboratory Skills • Music Industry (Music Performance and Sounds Production • Sport and Recreation • Kitchen Operations
VET PROGRAMS CONTRIBUTION TO THE VCE (CONT.) o VCE VET with Unit 3 and 4 sequences with no scored assessment available: o May be counted as fifth or sixth study, The increment will be calculated at 10% of the students fourth top study score. o Students will continue to undertake their full quota of studies in the VCE program ( 5 studies as well as a VET study with no scored assessment) o VCE VET- Some Certificate II courses only provide a Unit 1 & 2 sequence (may take 2 years to complete) o Provides credit only at Unit 1 & 2 level o RESTRICTIONS on the use of VFE Block Credit in the ATAR o In cases where a student was previously eligible for an ATAR, new VFE results only contribute to the ATAR when fewer than SIX VCE and VCE VET results are available o TRAINEESHIPS (VFE VET)- Can be signed up during the year o Traineeships signed as school based training must form a part of senior school studies- to receive credits towards VCE- o Traineeships may impact on funding for future studies at the same certificate level or industry
APPROVED HIGHER EDUCATION STUDIES o VCAA provides for VCE students who are very able academically the opportunity to undertake HE study as part of the VCE including: o First-year University studies o Advanced standing TAFE courses An Extension study is a first-year Higher Education study that is: o equivalent in content & assessment to 1 or more of current first-year Higher Education studies and constitutes at least 20 % of a full-time first-year university course o of a level for a high-achieving student and is a clear advance on an identified VCE Unit 3 and 4 study and commensurate in workload with an additional VCE study o of a level that will normally allow the student, on successful completion, to proceed to second year study at the Higher Education institution in that discipline

Tertiary institutions have indicated that they strongly support initiatives that encourage students to study a higher level mathematics and a language in the final years of schooling. Tertiary selection practices vary across institutions. Further information should be sought from particular tertiary providers.

ENGLISH subjects at ELTHAM HS 2021 Three choices of English studies in VCE that are complementary and unique from one another: ENGLISH - the VCE study most like the type of English studied to-date. o Analyse and interpret a range of written texts and films as texts o Analyse the Use of Persuasive Language in media texts o Write a range of different forms of texts in Creating and Presenting LITERATURE - develop an understanding of a variety of forms including films, plays, poetry, memoirs, short stories and novels. o Gain knowledge of appropriate metalanguage to discuss the texts in terms of the literary conventions and theoretical frameworks, criticism and ideologies ENGLISH LANGUAGE -an introduction to the linguistics of Australian English and other English varieties. o Gain knowledge of the subsystems and metalanguage used to identify and analyse features of language and its use in speech communities o More like a social science and doesn’t involve the reading and interpretation of whole texts in the way English and Literature both do.
