In the Zone – February 2019 CEO Update On 23 February, Netball New Zealand held their annual Council meeting and it was great to see so many of Northern Netball Centres in attendance. The aspect I like most about Council is the presentation of Service Awards. Netball cannot survive without the efforts of every single volunteer, and we thank everyone that contributes to quality netball experiences. The Service Awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge those volunteers who have been involved in netball for an extended period. 2019 Service Award recipients from Northern are Lyn Barr (North Harbour), Lillian Cattell (Manurewa), Elaine Curtis (Waitakere), Gail Griffiths (North Harbour), Marcia Hardcastle (North Harbour), Lee Manaia (Manurewa) and Zora Vitasovich (Waitakere). Thank you all for your efforts. Netball Manurewa Open Day a huge success Netball Manurewa held its first Open Day on Saturday 16thFebruary 2019. The desire was to showcase the Netball Centre to the Manurewa Community for FREE. Clendon Park School opened the day with a beautiful kapa haka performance. A variety of stalls showcased FutureFERNS, NetballSmart, Player Development Programme and clubs taking registrations. Demonstration games of Walking Netball and an adult version of 6v6 were very popular. The Netball Leaders group were big helpers on the day. Storm Purvis from the Northern Stars added special assistance at the netball stations. Well done Netball Manurewa along with your sponsors and volunteers who delivered such a successful day. Mangonui Community Led approach to addressing Sideline Behaviour Mangonui Netball Centre have taken a very personal approach to addressing side-line behaviour. New posters use people from their own community to let their netball community know how much they value their volunteers. The posters provide a useful reminder of the real people who can be hurt by poor side-line behaviour. The hope is seeing their own people in the posters will provide a real connection for the netball whanau.
In the Zone – February 2019 St Mary’s College Netball Leaders Netball Northern Zone in partnership with Auckland Netball Centre delivered Netball Leaders to 27 St Mary’s College students. The two day leadership course provided a deep learning about leadership with all students walking away with positive learning. All 27 students have completed coach and umpire training which will be applied over the 2019 season. We were also very lucky to have 10 Netball Leaders assist at the Mystics Open Day on 17 February 2019, where the amazing leadership and communication skills were on display. Thank you and good luck for the season. NZPP Northland Cluster Coaches got to observe “game day” processes for the coaches and athletes of the Northern Marvels. It was a great opportunity for our Northland Coaches to share questions and conversations with each other, Tia Winikerei Northern Zone Performance Manager and Ripeka Pire, Head Coach Northern Marvels. This opportunity resulted from the commitment and hard work of the Northland EPP Coaches since the Northland programme started in October 2018. Northern Zone Coach Developer Forum 23 brightly clad Coach Developers from across the Zone, gathered at Trusts Arena for the 2019 Coach Developers Forum. The theme of “Let’s Get Physical” rang true throughout the day. These amazing Coach Developers were put to the test of delivering parts of our coaching modules in an interactive, fun, physical, less complicated and engaging manner to meet the needs of coaches. The forum was supported by the expert Coach Leads from across NZ who shared their tips and tricks to deliver a workshop. A lot of laughs and knowledge shared meant that our Coach Developers walked away feeling more confident in their workshop delivery. Special congratulations to Kathryn Stonehouse from Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre who won best dressed. Olivia Newton John would be proud! #YOUROCK! Save the Date – Special Coach Workshop on Saturday 31 March 2019 Netball Northern Zone are hosting a special Netball New Zealand Coaching for Success workshop on the Fundamentals of youth coaching from NNZ Secondary Schools and the road to Netball World Cup 2019. The workshop will be held in conjunction with a special tickets for Super Sunday at Trust Arena. Pencil the date in your dairy as this workshop is one you will want to attend. Further info to come.
Thanks to our Funders Raewyn Mills’ tenure as President comes to an end Raewyn has been a member of Papakura Netball Centre for 50 years and for 40 years, has held an official role with the Centre Executive or Umpire Committee. Raewyn was instrumental in many futuristic endeavors of Papakura Netball Centre over the years starting with initiating the Association’s first ever Umpiring “Whistlers”, which was an innovative and successful club for beginner umpires. Raewyn was part of the forward thinking group of the Papakura Netball Association members who dreamed of owning their own netball pavilion. Dedication and hard work came to fruition in 1997, when Papakura Netball Centre moved from Smiths Ave courts to the new 27 outdoor courts and newly built pavilion. It was a dream come true after sixty years of hard work, lobbying fundraising, begging, and fighting for netball in the Papakura community. Raewyn, remaining with the futuristic and forward-thinking theme, also instigated the Papakura Netball Centre working group who negotiated the new 6 court indoor venue which opened in 2017. With 50 years affiliation to Papakura Netball Centre, 22 years on the Umpires Committee and 18 years as President, Raewyn is the heart and soul of the Centre and has dedicated many volunteer hours to ensure netball can be enjoyed by the Papakura and wider Counties Manukau community. Umpire Coach Assessor Training CAT Workshops in March During March, Netball Northern are holding CAT Workshops at Netball Centres across the Zone. The Umpire Coach Assessor Training (CAT) workshops are an important training opportunity to provide Umpire Coaches with the skills and knowledge to coach and develop umpires at each level with all Umpire Coaches attending one workshop each year to stay current. Knowledgeable and competent Umpire Coaches and Umpire Coach Assessors are vital to support umpires in developing and achieving high standards of umpiring and accreditation. The role of the Umpire Coach and Umpire Assessor is to empower umpires by using effective coaching methods that promote Umpire Centred Learning (UCL). Netball Northern are very pleased to have over 30 new Umpire Coach applications in 2019. The increased capacity will help our centres to grow, develop and support umpires and encourage progression along the umpire pathway. NetballSmart in Coach Modules NetballSmart is delivering alongside other Community Coach Modules. A recent Developing Physical Capacity workshop at Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre had great attendance. The workshop has been updated to be a practical approach to applying the six components of NetballSmart. Coaches had an opportunity to get creative turning elements of the NetballSmart Warm-up into drills and how to implement principals of smart movements in their training sessions.
