FROM FATHER XAVIER Dear Friends, As we move forward in the summer, some of the guidelines from the diocese have been changed. We will slowly get back to normal activities. We would like to welcome everyone back to church the last weekend of June for “Community Sunday“. We will encourage all to wear nametags so we can get to know the people in our pews and in our church community. It will be nice to get to know our friends and family. I am looking forward to it! With Ministerial Association of Waupaca, the Chapel on the Lakes prayer service starts this week Wednesday, June 9th at 6:00 pm. I will be leading the first service of the season. Please come and join the boat service on the Chain of Lakes in Waupaca. It is a free trip on Wednesdays at 6:00pm and lasts all summer. Let us pray for one another. God bless you all! WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES June 6, 2021 (Mk. 14:12-16, 22-26) Vinal Van Benthem ofs Phil works as a clinical social worker in an inner-city school in Chicago. For Phil it’s a dream come true, but he wasn’t sure that it could ever happen. You see, Phil is also a priest. After ordination he worked in his Diocesan Youth Ministry Office and did relief work in parishes, but Phil really wanted to be a social worker. So he petitioned the head of the religious order to which he belongs and after several meetings, endless forms, and three years of classes Phil earned his Master’s Degree in Social Work. Today Phil believes that it’s not only in church on Sunday that he lives out his call to priesthood but also in the weekday world of the young people he serves. In fact, because public monies fund the school, most of the kids don’t even know that he’s a priest. What they do know is that he cares about them, that they can trust him, and that if they let him he will do whatever it takes to help them. “This is my body…this is my blood…” As a priest Phil has probably said those words hundreds of times; but it is as a social worker that he has lived them. His altar of sacrifice looks more like an old oak desk than a square of gleaming marble, and the place where he puts his life on the line is the holding area of the local jail. But Phil’s secular work has put him squarely in the middle of the most sacred of actions, offering his own body and blood so that others may live. At our Baptism each one of us was baptized into the priesthood of believers – gifted with the Body and Blood of Christ so that we, in turn, might become the Body and Blood of Christ for others. Phil found his truest priesthood in the upper room of the secular world, the same upper room to which most of us are called. Phil’s desk is his altar. At what altar do we serve? For whom are we willing to become the Body and Blood of Christ? ST. MARY MAGDALENE CATHOLIC CHURCH 3

Mission Appeal - June 12th & 13th Fr. Paulus Yohanes Dharmawan Adharius (Wawan), s.x. of the St. Francis Xavier Missionaries will be preaching the Mission Appeal next Saturday, June 12th and Sunday June 13th at all masses as part of the annual Missionary Cooperation Plan. Fr. Wawan was born and grew up in Indonesia as part of a Buddhist family. The loss of his younger sister was what touched him and his family to convert to Christianity. During their mourning and some of the most difficult moments of their lifetime, he experienced the tangible presence of God through the support and help of Christian neighbors. This loving and caring witness of Christians triggered and touched him to answer God’s call to bring hope, love, mercy and compassion to the whole world. In 2007, Fr. Wawan graduated from the Catholic Theological Union (Chicago, IL). Immediately after his ordination, he was THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ARE LOOKING sent as a missionary to Taiwan–China. Question: Where does the money go that is collected each week at Church? Answer: This is a good question! Every parish has Gene Antoniewicz Joan Giefer financial obligations, including the basic operation of the Russell Wiesen Cleo Marshall buildings, salaries, maintenance, and improvements. In addition, there are schools to support, programs to run, charities to be funded, and operational Roger Zeihen Edward Kemp expenses like hosts and wine for Mass, music books, vestments, and so Alice Dombrowski Don Komis on. In some cases, cemeteries and other buildings need attention. Finally, there is the diocesan assessment that each parish pays to help run the Kathyrn Dreher Joanna Rheingans diocese and the support services provided to each parish. Most parishes manage to get by with the collection, a few fundraisers and endowments. But contrary to popular opinion, cash flow is also a problem, and many parishes operate in the red. The Finance Committee is responsible for assisting the pastor in fiscal management, and good stewardship is the basis for successful programs.
