DI V I SION I Horticulture Class: The Charter Oak Gavel Challenge “The Charter Oak tree of Hartford is the Constitution State’s most iconic legend. Native American tribal councils gathered under its broad branches. Colonists hid their royal charter of 1662 in the tree, keeping it out of the hands of a crown official. The oak tree fell in a storm in 1856.” Creating Connecticut: Critical Moments That Shaped a Great State by Connecticut State Historian, Walter Woodward, May 2020, p. 190 C L A S S I : Charter Oak . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 19 entries Our GCA Zone II meeting theme, Charter Oak, recognizes the historic importance of this tree and celebrates The Garden Club of Hartford’s long history of civic and financial support of Hartford’s tree canopy. GCH has purchased and installed numerous trees in the park system of Hartford. GCH recognizes the crucial role that trees play to the quality of life in this city. In particular, the white oak is an important habitat for pollinators and caterpillars and provides many food sources for wildlife. While the original Charter Oak fell more than a century and a half ago, many of its offspring continue to thrive throughout Connecticut. “Trees” has been the theme for our Conservation Committee for the past two years. Gavel Challenge Quercus alba, White Oak, grown from seed in an appropriately sized terra cotta container with saucer. The Charter Oak Gavel Challenge Entry Card and the Propagation Card are both required for entry; the latter should detail dates and growing conditions. Please place back-to-back, so written areas face out, and enclose in a plastic sleeve. Forms can be found at the end of this schedule. The seeds (acorns) will be distributed to Club Presidents in October of 2021. Class Consultant: Marian Kellner, 860-874-4878 (c), mariankellner@comcast.net GCH Special Awards (at the judges’ discretion) The Charter Oak Gavel Challenge Award: for an exhibit of great distinction. The Betty Stanley Novice Award in Horticulture: for an outstanding specimen grown by a novice. Charter Oak: GCA Zone II Meeting & Flower Show 11 June 14 – 15, 2022 • Hartford, Connecticut
