Catholic Traditions “… stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.” 2 Thess 2:15 It has been a few weeks since I have been able to sit and write you a letter for the bulletin. I do en- joy writing them, so it has been a little empty with my attention divided. As you know, for two weeks I was in Uganda for a mission trip. That journey had been long planned and stalled for about two years because of COVID restrictions in both the US and Uganda as well as the European nations we had looked into passing through. How the world has changed. The journey was finally accomplished and the experi- ence was exceptional. We celebrated the 10th Anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe High School, a con- tinued work in progress begun with trust in God at the request of local villagers in 2006. Today we have about 300 students from Senior 1-7, roughly the equivalent of the US grade level 8-12 and the first year of university undergraduate work or technical college. Attending the Jubilee Mass were also a group of about 15 graduates who were pioneer students and are now out in the working world. Because of their education they have been successful in achieving goals beyond what is available to most of the countries rural population. It was certainly a proud moment Now that we have returned and I have a moment, let me acknowledge these wonderful Sundays which mark a transition from the Easter Season into our long stretch of Ordinary Time. Last Sunday we celebrated the Pentecost descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Today we celebrate Trinity Sun- day, a tricky part of our deposit of faith for most homilists who hope to capture the attention of the as- sembly. Next weekend we conclude the White Sundays or Ordinary Time with Corpus Christi and the great Eucharistic processions. They give identity, strength and joy to God’s holy Church. These are privi- leged days of faith and hope and we are certainly in need of such gifts of God. Finally, I want to address the Inspired by the Spirit Capital Campaign. The task of participation in the broader life of the Church may seem unrelated to the more local experience. But in truth, we are all part of the Mystical Body of Christ and responsible for our brothers and sisters. Whether it is people we may never meet, or our neighbor with whom we routinely pray, we are all members of the same body with Christ as our head. Therefore, the Inspired by the Spirit Campaign is an opportunity to make visible in a concrete reality the participation we have in the parish and, in union with all the other parishes, in the Diocese of La Crosse. I have appreciated the past weeks and months working with parish leadership, volunteers and regis- tered parishioners at St. James. I have felt your welcome in new and strengthening ways. It is never easy for a priest to stand before a small group or sit it at a table and discuss money for the church. Hon- estly though, I don’t know why it is so hard for us because Jesus spoke to the use of temporal goods very frequently and with demanding conviction. Still, it is awkward and uncomfortable. But many have made it a great joy for me because it goes so far beyond finances. Some have shared great memories, deeply held values and much of the history here at St. James and on the city’s north side. I was even able to learn about the mission some parishioners conducted in Ukraine some years back. St. James is a remarkable place and I have been enriched to take in every detail and learn so much. Today is called “Commitment Sunday” in our campaign. Already we have received some remarkable participation of prayerful support and monetary pledges. We are about half way to our goal with 15 pledges and an average gift of over $10,000.00. I am so grateful to each family and individual who has made this kind of investment in our future and for the larger Church. Through these efforts, from our to- tal the 35% remaining with the diocese is met. Now is the time when each of us needs to consider the sacrificial gift we can give. Since this is a five year campaign, after a 10% down payment of $300, a gift of $45 each month over the five years of the campaign amounts to a pledge of $3,000 to help us achieve our goal. After a 10% down payment of $500, a gift of $75 each month amounts to a $5,000.00 pledge. With your support we will cross the finish line, be able to secure barrier free access to our church with a suitable bathroom in the vestibule of the upper level. We will also be able to improve our choir loft with easier access and safer use. At full participation, the other elements of our parish case statement will be met and St. James will be stronger for it. Completed pledge cards may be turned into the ushers today, given to the parish office this week or sent directly to the diocese in the envelopes supplied. Thank you for your prayerful consideration, your support and your trust in the providence of God. May He reward you abundantly. Father Woodrow Pace
