The Herald A Publication of First Lutheran Church July 2019 Vol. 166 No. 7 Dear First Lutheran, A year is such an odd amount of time to spend with a community. Just when you get the hang of things — just when you start feeling like you know the rhythms — just when you learn where the extra paper towel rolls for the bathrooms are(!) — your time begins to draw to a close. I have done two other intentional one-year terms with a community and then, as now, it’s just not enough time. And yet, because we’re Lutherans who do this sinner-saint, both-and thing, as I get bummed about wrapping up my time with you here, I’m also overwhelmed with gratitude for all that you have given and shared with me this year. You have welcomed me into your homes and Bible studies. You’ve pulled up a chair for me at Chancel Circle and the Church Council. You’ve let me into the amazing, Spirit-filled, messy wonder that is Wellness Center. You have invited me to help plan and lead worship in this place; and you’ve trusted me to step up to the pulpit and held my growth as a preacher with love and tenderness. You’ve prayed for me and with me; you’ve let me pray for you. I am so grateful to you! For the folks wanting details and logistics (and that’s usually me, too): My last Sunday here at First Lutheran will be Sunday, July 21. I’ll be preaching and there will be an opportunity to pray together and bless each other for the journey. At this point, I am still in the process of searching for a Call in the ELCA. I would welcome your prayers in this process: prayers for me in my discernment (and, if the process goes long, for my good humor and hope); and prayers for congregations currently in the call process. It’s a big lift to find a new pastor and I am thankful for the work already in motion of Call Committees that I might come into contact with. I rejoice with Pastor Maggie, your intern from last year, as she gets ready to get ordained and begin life with her new congregation, and I give thanks for the Call Committee that worked hard to call her. Please know and trust that I will be praying for you, too. I love this congregation and fierce community. You have a pretty hefty place in my heart, well-earned and well-tended. With love and thanks, Pastor Korla
