On Tonight’s Menu… Support with phonics Support with reading Support with maths General support Assessment
Phonics We follow Letters and Sounds, which introduces phonemes (sounds) and their corresponding graphemes (how the phonemes are written) in phases. We introduce the phonemes using Jolly Phonics songs, actions and stories.
Phonics Phase 1 – taught at pre-school / nursery no letters or phonemes environmental sounds; instrumental sounds; body sounds; rhythm and rhyme; alliteration; voice sounds; oral blending and segmenting
Phonics Phase 3 – taught in Reception (Apple Class) digraphs trigraphs one grapheme for each phoneme now known
Phonics Phase 4 – taught in Reception (Apple Class) no new phonemes taught blend and segment words with consonant clusters CVCC and CCVC and beyond
Phonics Phase 5 – taught in Year 1 alternative graphemes for known phonemes different ways of pronouncing graphemes
Phonics Phase 6 – taught in Year 2 working on spelling conventions, including prefixes and suffixes, etc.
Reading school books are (by and large) phonetically decodable at a level which is in line with your child’s learning it’s really important that they have access to higher level books to support love of books and to aid with inference and vocabulary skills introduce your child to a variety of genres, such as poetry, newspapers, fiction, non- fiction, etc. talk about what you have read - ask your child questions: retrieval, inference, opinion
Writing as writing is linked to speech, please engage your child in conversation, encouraging them to speak clearly and effectively, in simple sentences model correct pronunciation back to them practise handwriting on the lines, keeping letters proportionate in size ensure letters are formed correctly using their class’ handwriting style help model the difference between capitals and lowercase letters
Maths Reception – Year 1 look for numbers in your environment help your child to write digits 0 - 9 accurately recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes in your environment talk about everyday maths such as length, capacity, weight, time, money, position and distance practise counting to 100 forwards and backwards, from any given number play weekly maths games
Maths Year 1 – Year 2 practise reading and writing numbers in words (spellings) and numerals practise counting in 2s, 5s & 10s forwards and backwards from any given number name and describe properties of 2D & 3D shapes talk about everyday maths such as money, length, capacity, weight and time, using standard measures such as litres, centimetres etc.
General get a good night’s sleep and eat healthily – maybe your child could help with cooking? help to pack bags to bring correct equipment to school (reading books, diaries, homework, PE kit, water bottles) read DASH and school calendar – be prepared for important events support with homework see website for support & curriculum information check bags for letters and return reply slips please 2SIMPLE – Apple Class
