COMMODORE’S BRIEFING Cool winds prevail and it is scary to think we are in the final stretch of 2020. While writing this article I am reflecting on an amazing season which feels too early to end. I am missing burger night, cocktails on the patio and everyone already. Living on the island gives another perspective to life, slower, quieter with all the amazing fall colors and island traditions. The PIBYC staff has done an amazing job cleaning the club and putting everything to bed for what I hope will not be a long winter. This year has been a trial, more than anyone could have expected, and our staff, with CC leading the way, were spectacular! It is a humbling feeling to be writing this as your 2021 Commodore. I appreciate everyone’s support, words of encouragement and yes even the comments and suggestions on how things are or should be going. My one resounding feeling is this is OUR club, and everyone plays a part in making this an amazing place. The Change of Watch was beautiful, fun, and very special. Thank you, Brian, for all your work, Amy for the lovely decorations. CC, Barb, Dave and all the staff for the food, drinks and making everything go so smoothly. As we enter a new year, I encourage everyone to read the Jib Sheet, look for the weekly emails and come support the club! Events to look forward to include: • I-LYA Fall meeting - check their website for details. The meeting is being held in Westlake and is always a fun event. • Winter Doldrums – Please join us for dinner and hear ideas for the 2021 season. • Visit to Buckeye Lake Yacht Club February 27, 2021 Happy holidays to all and a very happy new year! Marcia Ashley – Commodore VICE-COMMODORE’S CORNER The lights are turned off and the staff has done all the cleaning, it is a sad time. Looking forward to the Winter Doldrums which will be in Sandusky, Ohio this year at the Best Western Plus, 6011 Milan Rd. Dinner will be at the Sandusky Yacht Club, a short 10 minute drive from the hotel. The price will be $50.00 total for Lake Erie surf and turf buffet, prime rib, yellow perch, herb roasted chicken, vegetable, and a vegetable pasta. We will have the Sandusky Yacht Club’s famous bread pudding for dessert. We are working on a few fund raisers for ideas for the 2021 season. A Night at the Races and Rolling Raffle which Connie Miller has generously been helping us design and implement. I want to thank Brian Leonard for a great year. Marcia and Al, words do not sufficiently express my gratitude for your help. Before we see each other again, be safe and stay healthy. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Jeff Berquist – Vice-Commodore
REAR COMMODORE What an interesting summer. Things sure were different, but the PIBYC was definitely a safe harbor during the storm and we had a lot of good times in spite of all the new rules. I am very honored to serve as Rear Commodore this year and appreciate all of the support and encouragement of so many members. To those who I have not yet met, I look forward to making your acquaintance and having great times together this summer. Details on the Winter Doldrums can be found on the front page. I look forward to seeing all of you there. Another winter event that we are working on for 2021 is a “cruise out” to the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club. So many BLYC members enjoy visiting our club in the summer and they want to return the hospitality and host us February 27, 2021. Whether you are “cruising” down from the north or already reside in the Columbus area (as a number of members do) it is sure to be a good time. Details to follow, please check your weekly updates. I look forward to this new opportunity and hope to see you at the Winter Doldrums Steve Harris – Rear Commodore SAIL FLEET CAPTAIN Good Day All, On Sept 25 – 27 Bob Everson and I journeyed down to the Ocean Springs Yacht Club for the Formula Wave National Championships and three days of racing. We had a nice turnout for a Covid year of 30 boats. Friday was a light air day and racing ended early when the wind totally quit after 3 races. Saturday dawned with little wind and racing was delayed until a heavy breeze finally came up mid-afternoon and we got in 4 races to make an acceptable championship. After the two days Bob was in second place and I was in first by 8 points. With that lead I didn’t really need to race on Sunday. Sure enough, mother nature intervened and Sunday there was no wind to start the day. We postponed till 11 am and with no wind in sight, the fleet voted to cancel the days racing since many people had a long way to go to get home. Nevada, South Carolina, Minnesota, Ohio. Of course, as soon as we all start loading up our boats, the wind comes up to tease us. I would have loved to race on Sunday but at the Awards ceremony, Bob being last year’s champ awarded me the National Championship Trophy for 2020. My second, Bob kept his second place after winning last year. Again, a dominate result for Put-in-Bay Yacht Club. The trophy has already been returned to its place of honor on the fireplace mantel in our club house. That is the happy ending for this crazy year! Time to put away the boats (and dock), wait for some snow, and go skiing! PS: Thanks to Steve Snyder, his son, and board members that helped get the last of the dock risers stored away for the winter. Doug Seib – Sail Fleet Captain
POWER FLEET CAPTAIN I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Robert (Bob) Myers, I am your new Power Fleet Captain taking over for Tom Priesman. My wife Marge and I have been in boating for over 30 years and members of PIBYC for 5 years. We will do our best to plan and execute exciting and fun cruise outs for the 2021 boating season. The 2020 boating season is now in our memories. The last cruise out for the year was great. Tom and Kathy hosted a wine tasting party at the club with great food and company. To top off that on Saturday the group had a rib cookout at the Miller Marina Pavilion with a campfire on the pier away from any boats. Thank you Deb, Jim and Scott for providing a great place to have it. There was plenty of food and socializing in the great outdoors, Tom and Kathy you did a great job. Marge and I were at the Change of Watch ceremony but after both events a lot of people met at the club and socialized until last call. First Mate Marge and I are starting to plan the 2021 cruise out schedule. We have one date at this time and that is the North Channel Yacht Club the week of July 18. We will plan on having a cruise out every month starting in May some events may be tentative due to the corona virus but we would like to present it in January. If anyone has suggestions on places to go and things to do please contact me at rmyers214@gmail.com. I was told that this is the last Jib Sheet before the holidays so Marge and I would like to wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday season. Bob & Marge Myers – Power Fleet Captain & First Mate OFFICE CLIPS Well that’s a wrap on the 2020 season! I was thinking back to this time last year, and who would have thought 2020 could have been as crazy as it was. But we made it through. We stayed healthy. We hope all of our members’ loved ones have stayed healthy. But now it is time to head into the winter months; those cold quiet winter months. As I write this, our staff is working on cleaning up the clubhouse and property and putting her down for a nice winter nap. We will anxiously await April and May when the hustle and bustle will begin again. A huge thank you to all of our staff members: Dave, Terri, Lois, Bob, Lucas, Katie, Sean, Nora, Grace and Kris who truly helped make this season a success. I also must make a shout out to my fellow manager, Barb Chrysler for all of her hard work managing this club. She has taught me so much, and I loved working side by side with her. She will be retiring from managing PIBYC next year, but we hope to see her enjoying “the other side” and visiting us for a drink or dinner and relaxing! I am looking forward to reconnecting with our members at the Winter Doldrums in January. Thank you for a great year. Happy Holidays! AUXILIARY NEWS It is hard to believe the 2020 season is over. It was a different summer, but we all made the very best of it, and the Yacht Club activity was one of the bright points. The Change of Watch was a wonderful event, and I was privileged to be sworn in as this year’s President of the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club Auxiliary. I’m honored to carry on the club traditions established by generations before me, including my Mom, Linda Frederick, and my grandmother, Gerda Crowe. I’d like to thank C.C. Zerbey for her Auxiliary leadership, and all she did and continues to do for the Club. I’d also like to sincerely welcome the 2021 Auxiliary Board, including Vice President Krista Calfee, Secretary Sue Fegen and Treasurer Suzanne McFeaters. Together, we look forward to a fun-filled 2021 season. We are working hard to get our Ship’s Store and new PIBYC merchandise online in time for your holiday gifts – stay tuned for a special announcement! We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season, and we look forward to next season. Christy Bykowski – Auxiliary President LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Dear Members, This is our last issue of the 2020 season. Special jolly holiday thanks to Scott Beam and Marilyn Paselsky for their support. I must thank Scott Beam for all of his assistance, for showing me the ropes and for sticking with me over the years. This will be Scott’s last issue and I am grateful for his help. Please send photos of the events you attend or stop me and ask me to take your photo. If you are someone who submits articles or you would like to share a photo please email Amycshamrock@yahoo.com or PIBYCJibSheet@pibyc.org. Happy holidays and a safe and healthy New Year! Amy Catherine Schulte – Editor Building Fund Contributions As you renew your membership for 2021 please consider a generous contribution to the club’s Building Fund. We have all enjoyed the many improvements to the club over the past few years: the upgraded kitchen which allowed for vastly improved food service, the expanded patio that allowed for appropriate social distancing this year and will accommodate already purchased additional patio furniture in 2021, and we can not forget the risers on the main and dinghy docks that allowed us all to keep our feet dry. All those improvements were funded from operating income from the club and the Auxiliary. But the club did not have a surplus in 2020 so further improvements will depend upon our ability to raise funds. Let’s keep our club’s positive momentum by contributing generously to the Building Fund. Membership Survey The Membership Committee is looking to build upon our current successes. We will be sending a survey out prior to next season to get your feedback and ideas for improvements you feel will benefit PIBYC. So Please be on the lookout in the near future. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season. Scott Owens, PIBYC Trustee Membership Chair
We had a wonderful evening sampling local wines from Heinemans Winery and the Put-in-Bay Winery. Thank you Dave McNew and staff for your culinary pairings. Thank you CC Wisniewski for your assistance in putting the evening together. Thank you all for attending this event and for all of your support. Tom and Kathy Priesman That evening Jeff Berquist donned his edible orchid enhancing his hairstyle. Marcia Ashley’s wine preferences matured to include a red wine. Put-in- Bay Winery’s Valentines Chocolate Wine was the evenings sweet and delicious finale. If you have not sampled chocolate wine, be sure to give it a try. The Darkening of the PIBYC Cupola Congratulations and best wishes to Barbara “Just as the light in the ever-watchful tower shines to Chrysler.
