Lord of Life Council Meeting Minutes December 10th, 2023 In attendance: Candy Wehrle, Nancy Hellekson, Norm Lyon, Stacey Biberdorf, Ben Hegel, Janyce Luebke, Vicar Amber, Brenda Johnson, Joe Hauge, Dean Hedrick. Meeting called to order by Candy and started with a devotion ready by Nancy. Minutes of the last meeting were reviewed, Nancy made a motion to accept the minutes, Stacey seconded the motion. Motion carried. Treasurer’s report provided by Joe, we are paying bills and watching the checking accounts as we go through the Christmas season. Ben made a motion to approve the report , Norm seconded. Motion carried. Presidents report: Al checked with Joe, the reason the financial statement did not show any payroll taxes in 2022 was there was a housing agreement with Pastor Bruce. The I-pad was bought with Dennis Green memorial money. Looking at the financial report, the bottom sentence explaining the income shows the over $5000 received for the repair of the bell tower, thus as the weekly income shows we are not meeting our financial needs to meet LOL obligations. I would urge all church members to pray about their gifts to the church. Vicar’s report: Amber has a baptism scheduled for Saturday Dec. 16 & 24th. Laurie Lepel’s funeral is scheduled for Dec.16. End of semester is Dec. 15th. Amber is continuing to work on her internship goals. Committee reports: Education: The Christmas Puppet program today was great. There will be no Sunday school Dec. 24th or 31st. Property: Dean H has offered his services to side the Bell Tower, LOL will cover material with his company covering labor. 2
Norm made a motion to grant Dean permission to re-side the Bell Tower, Ben seconded. Motion carried. Men’s urinal needs attention, Jeff G ordered parts to fix. Family Fellowship & Social Outreach: Next meeting planned for January 28th to discuss super bowl activities. Finance & Stewardship: Discussed $5000 donation for Bell tower. An additional $10,000 donation for visual updates in the sanctuary. Discussed asking the church to match the donation amount for building maintenance. Music & Worship/Altar Guild: Christmas music planning is done. Amber asked to have someone look into tightening screws on the advent candle stand. Ministry Site Committee: All good. Old Business: Amber found a company that will do free photos and church directories, families who want photo packages pay for their own. Will plan on scheduling possibly in April. New Business: Start planning for LOL 40th anniversary in 2024, Brenda will put an announcement in the bulletin looking for members to be on a planning committee. Brenda will see who is on the nominating committee, Brad and Candy’s terms are ending. Jen S has volunteered to join the council. Janyce and Norm have agreed to stay on. Next meeting will be January 14th. Brad will lead devotions. Meeting adjourned with the Lord’s prayer. Submitted by, Janyce Luebke 3
From Vicar Amber Happy New Calendar Year! I have a few bits of calendar items, of which I’d like you to be aware. While I will be taking a J-term (January term), I will study from home and church. Our annual meeting will be in January. Please make plans to attend! After church service on Jan 28th, I’ll be leaving for my prolog week at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, IA. I’ll return on Feb 2nd. As my seminary education moves along, I will also be starting my internship in either January or February. During internship, I’ll set some goals of learning with my site committee and church council. I will continue in the same role – as student and Vicar. During my internship, it is a time for us to explore new ideas and learn together. With some very generous donations, our bell tower will be resided and repaired. Also, we are entertaining the idea of adding some additional audio-visual components to the sanctuary. Thank you for the generous donors! Our church council has started to have discussions about how to celebrate Lord of Life’s 40th anniversary! If you have any ideas to consider, please let me or someone on the church council know. We also would like to update our pictorial directory. Please stay tuned for the dates set aside for pictures. Please find these Scriptures passages for you to consider during this new year. As we turn the calendar to 2024, you may be looking forward to some meaningful times that can occur during a year. Consider these verses and how they resonate in your heart, even if milestone dates are not yet penciled into your calendars. 4
Praise God: 1 Peter 1:3 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” As we embark on a new year, we are encouraged to start it with a spirit of praise. Give Control To God – Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Entering a new year, we are encouraged to let go and let God. When we let God be God, good things happen. May God's everlasting love and protection will be with you every year! Hopefully these Bible verses remind you of His providence and grace. Let us all move forward with good faith and courage that God holds our tomorrows that will turn into weeks, months and then into another brand- new year! Go in peace! Thanks be to God!
