Youth Connect network meeting – 28.08.2019 Traditional acknowledgement Tom Murphy opened the meeting at 10:15 am and on behalf of the Sunshine Coast Council acknowledged the traditional custodians of the lands from which we meet and paid respect to their elders past, present and emerging. 1.0. Sunshine Coast Council Connect 1.1. Youth Action Plan update PODCAST The Next Generation Health & Wellbeing podcast is a weekly podcast delivered by three young people living on the Sunshine Coast. The hosts explore what it means to be healthy, vital, fit and high on life, exploring and educating on the opportunities specific to young people available on the Coast! The platform is perfect for anyone 12 to 25 years old, bringing inspiration and empowerment to the Sunshine Coast Youth community. Like the Speak Up Engage Facebook page or visit the Speak Up Engage podcast to tune in and please also promote to young people SMARTPHONE APPLICATION (attachment) The Speak Up Engage smartphone application has recently been launched. The project aims to collect response from Sunshine Coast Youth community on important topics regarding environmental focuses, perceived public safety and what a strong community represents. Community Strategy Update August – October 2019 Finalisation of the action plan and strategy content Presentation and consultation on the final draft with Councillors and SC Board of Management Presentation of the final community strategy to council at October Ordinary Meeting for adoption. Post adoption of the strategy, a supporting operational action plan will be developed to define clear actions/responsibilities on the delivery of priorities and outcomes of the strategy. 2

Busy at Work, Transition to Work – Natalie Mcivor The Transition to Work program is an Australian Government initiative that provides youth employment services and support for young people to help them gain employment or further education. The service aims to help build skills and confidence to enter the workforce. We have experience working with young people who have left school early or who have had difficulty entering employment after school. Department of Education – Amber Kerrigan Youth Support Coordinators focus on engaging at risk young people within the school system. Currently looking for opportunities to provide proactive programming to prevent disengagement in the 12-15 year old cohort. Youth Support Coordinators can be a positive first point of contact within a school and are primarily focused on supporting young people to remain engaged in education. Youth Justice – Nathan Andrews Recent permanent staffing for Sunshine Coast Youth Justice employees. Two programs currently in the Sunshine Coast area include: Restorative justice conferencing A restorative justice conference is a meeting between a child who has committed a crime and the people most affected by that crime to discuss: what happened the effects of the offence repairing the harm caused to the victim. Transition to success T2S uses a vocational training and therapeutic service model. It is delivered in a community setting to young people aged 15-17 who are involved in the youth justice system or are assessed as being at-risk of entering. Youth Justice works with the local community to deliver T2S, including: other agencies local businesses community organisations individuals. Youth Connect network meeting – 28.08.2019 2.4. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre – Lyndal Regent Maleny Youth Festival – Friday 13th September. Theme is ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrating Maleny Neighbourhood centre 20 year anniversary #malenyyouthfestival. Calling for all service/organisations that offer programs for young people in the Hinterland to become involved. The Board meeting Charity – Gordon Barratt The Board meeting charity provides support and funding for families of children with disabilities and mental health issues. We have developed our own Pathways approach to youth mental health, providing funding towards psychology, post psychology therapy programs and then support long term support through mentoring. TBM encourage all groups that are dealing with children in this space that don’t have funding or support to touch base with us and as long as the children meet our funding criteria we are sure to help. Youth Connect network meeting – 28.08.2019 Fresh Start is a Skilling Queenslanders for work program specifically designed to assist young people (15 – 24) connected with Youth Justice Services or Queensland Corrective Services to gain industry recognised qualifications and employment. The service covers the whole Sunshine Coast region. Fresh Start recently received funding to provide this program on the Sunshine Coast for a second year having had a very successful first. Fusion Sunshine Coast – Nicola Stanfield Fusion is a Christian youth and community non-for-profit organisation. Currently running several programs: Lunchtime programs for school students to have a safe place to go to and engage with fun activities during lunchtime. Fusion youth (Tuesday and Thursday nights) –For young people to get connected, have fun, share a meal together and discuss relevant topics. Holiday Program (Summer and Winter Holidays) –For young people to stay active and have something to do during school holidays. Also affordable to families who may not be able to be involved otherwise. Hiking camps (During the holidays) –For young people to be outdoors, active and have moments to be still in the midst of a chaotic world. Mentoring – For young people who would like to be mentored by one of our youth workers. Fusion Mobile drop in centre –For the last couple of years Fusion has had a Bus work as a mobile drop in centre. We locate ourselves at the Sippy Downs skate park. We have recently sold the bus and are in the process of turning a trailer into the new drop in centre. This will allow the program to be more flexible and easier to transport. Other business 3.1 Family and Child Connect Sunshine Coast - Shay-anne Murphy (attachment) As part of the Local Level Alliance Strategic Plan 2019-2021, Family and Child Connect as part of the Local Level Alliance is mapping all of the available youth services within the Sunshine Coast and Noosa local government areas. The project also aims to identify the gaps and barriers in accessing services. 5
Youth Connect network meeting – 28.08.2019 The goal of the Local Level Alliance is to ensure that young people and their families receive flexible, assessable and responsive services as early as possible to prevent family and relationship breakdown and disengagement from school. Please find attached the document which the LLA requests Youth Support Services on the Sunshine Coast to complete, please indicate the services you provide for young people and their families and the geographic locations. Please also feel free to pass this on to any organisations who provide assistance to young people who are experiencing vulnerability.
