January 2021 Virtual Services We’re still here for you Our YMCA EarlyON Child and Family Centres are currently closed in alignment with provincial legislation and efforts to promote public safety and support physical distancing in response to the COVID 19 pandemic. EarlyON Program Facilitators continue to provide services for children, parents and caregivers virtually. We are able to support you, answer questions and provide resources by telephone, email and through our social media posts on Facebook and Twitter. Super Kids... they come Super Kids! Screen Time Wednesday Zoom This discussion will focus on the latest screen time guidelines, January 27 including how much is too much, 1pm the best ways to use screen time, and options to reduce screen time to ensure a well balanced experience.
Adult Workshops Continued Activity Date and Time Location Description Sock Buddy Thursday Zoom Sock Buddies, filled with rice, can be microwaved for a snuggly January 28 friend for your child to take to bed 1pm or take out on chilly errands with you. There is no sewing required and it’s a great way to use those poor single socks that might be lying in your drawer! Add your favourite essential oil for a little extra comfort! Materials Needed: one crew-length sock, 2.5 cups of rice, hot glue gun, string, sharpie markers, fabric scraps for decorating Children’s Workshops Children’s Activity Date and Time Location Description Bird Feeders Thursday Zoom Do you have any stale cereal or fruit that’s past its prime? Let’s January 7 make a bird feeder! It’s a great 10am craft for strengthening fine-motor skills and a lovely way to help out your backyard friends when food sources are scarce. Materials needed: cereal (i.e Cheerios), fruit, wooden skewers and string Frozen Sun Saturday Zoom For this project, go for a walk around your neighbourhood and Catcher January 9 collect items you would like to add 10am to your suncatcher (small twigs, pine needles, small pinecones ) whatever you can find! We will assemble them in a water-filled container, and soon have a Frozen Suncatcher. Materials Needed: small container, string/ribbon, access to water and a freezer, items you’ve collected (fruit peels from compost work too) 3
Children’s Workshops Continued Activity Date and Time Location Description Paper Plate Monday Zoom This super easy and fun “Frosty” with a big top hat will make a Snowman January 11 terrific winter window or door 10am hanging. Children will exercise their small muscles, and use eye/ hand coordination as part of this creative project. Try it Tuesday Tuesday Zoom Broccoli and Avocado! Are you interested in trying new January 12 foods? Maybe learning some new 10am recipes to try? Join in and try a new fruit and vegetable and learn some healthy recipes to share with the whole family! Lemon Volcanoes Saturday Zoom A little bit of science and a whole lot of FUN! What happens when January 16 baking soda and lemon juice 10am collide? A mini lemon volcano! Materials Needed: 2 fresh lemons food colouring, baking soda, dish soap, sharp knife, and plate Melting Snow Men Monday Zoom This puffy paint sensory activity is perfect for a cold, wintery day, January 18 and makes a cute keepsake 10am when it’s dry. Material Needed: shaving foam, white school glue, sparkles, (if you have them!) construction paper (blue, black, orange) googly eyes, scraps of material or felt, twigs Winter Water Colour Saturday Zoom Let’s make a beautiful winter painting...a surprise painting that Art January 23 comes to life when wax meets 10am water colours! Materials Needed: white paper, a white crayon, water colour paints, paintbrush Sparkly Winter Monday Zoom Do you have a little artist in your family who enjoys using different Painting January 25 household items to create a 10am masterpiece? Join on in today in 4 creating a sparkly painting using Epsom salts!
