Picture: BALJEET SINGH THE finals of the singles competition of the Fiji Open Tennis Championship will be played today. Adverse weather in the Western Division forced organisers to postpone some games from when the Jack's of Fiji-sponsored tournament began on Thursday at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club in Nadi. Fiji Tennis Association president Naga Reddy said defending women's singles champion Tarani Kamoe of Fiji was on her way to retaining her title. "William is also in the final and their final will also be played tomorrow (today). "Bad weather condition forced us to make the move because it has been raining throughout the tournament. "Also we want to give the finalists some time to rest and recover and then play when they are fresh. They also played in doubles or mixed finals and it would not be fair if we got them to play such an important game (final) when they are exhausted."
O'Connell will face Cyril Jacobe of New Caledonia while Kamoe will be up against Maria Tere- Apisah of Papua New Guinea who is based in Fiji at the Regional Tennis Centre in Lautoka. Meanwhile, O'Connell and Kamoe teamed up to win the open mixed doubles title. Kamoe and Annie Shannon won the ladies open doubles final yesterday. The Davis Cup tennis tie involving the Pacific Oceania Team, was postponed earlier this month due to political unrest in Myanmar and will now be played in Dubai in September. The Joint Executive Officer of the Oceania Tennis Federation, David Smith. says after the frustrations on the past month this week's tournament is a welcome hit-out. "It was disappointing but Fiji Open does give the opportunity for the likes of Cyril Jacobe from Vanuatu. He's the number one Pacific Oceania Davis Cup player so he's the top seed in the men's open singles. We've also got William OConnell - he's in college in the States and he's the number
two seed - and I think he's probably one of the up and coming players who eventually will force himself into the team." The hometown hope Tarani Kamoe is both the top seed and defending champ in the women's singles draw. Kamoe falls in final Zanzeer Singh Tuesday, June 04, 2013 NADI'S Tarani Kamoe failed to defend her women's open singles title during the Fiji Open Tennis Championship at the Denarau Golf and Racquet Club yesterday. Kamoe went down fighting to Marcia Tere-Apisah of Papua New Guinea during the final of the Jack's of Fiji-sponsored event. She won the first set 6-4. However, Tere-Apisah bounced back to win the second set by the same score. Tere-Apisah kept her cool to eventually seal the match by taking out the third set 6-2. In the men's open singles final, national rep William O'Connell lost to Cyril Jacobe of Vanuatu in straight sets (1-6, 4-6). Fiji coach Naga Reddy said Tere-Apisah managed to turn the tables against Kamoe after losing to her in the final last year. He said there was great rivalry among the two players. "The final between Marcia and Tarani was exciting," Reddy said. "It was unfortunate that Tarani could not make it back-to-back titles. Marcia showed determination after losing the first set. "For William, it was his first major tournament in the country after some time." Fiji Tennis Association secretary John Shannon said they attracted more than 130 players. "We had 30 different categories," Shannon said. "For next year we are targeting a larger number of players from overseas. "We will be offering family deals. This is not only good for the sport but for tourism as well."
Fiji Sun Fiji Tennis Open hits off today May 29, 2013 | Filed under: Fiji Sports | Posted by: newsroom By WAISEA NASOKIA A total of 122 tennis players from the Oceania region will compete in the 106th Fiji Open tournament at the Denerau Golf and Racket Club today. Fiji’s number one, Tarani Kamoe, will be defending her title in the women single and is expected to face uphill competition during the five- day tennis fiesta. Eighteen-year-old Kamoe was the first Fijian to win the title in 24 years. Last year’s top seed Marcia Tere-Apisah (PNG) was eliminated by New Caledonia’s Assya Trimari in a surprise upset. Trimari came through to the final fall short before Kamoe despite taking the first set 6-4. Kamoe then got going and took the next two sets 6-3, 6-2 to claim the title. Australian Mark Shanahan will be out to defend the open men’s singles once again. The title had been his for the last consecutive three years. Fiji Tennis Association executive and national coach, Naga Reddy said Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands are expected to add flavour to the strong challenge expected from Australia and New Zealand.
“We have received much more entries than last year. Over 70 overseas entries and we expect a tough competition with the inclusion of the Pacific-Oceania Davis Cup players,” Reddy said. “A lot of competition is expected from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea, while NZ and Australia is always tough. “Tarani Kamoe, William O’Connor and Annie Shannon are looking forward to a grand competition. An excellent numbers of players will be competing particularly in the veteran’s categories,” Reddy said. 122 players will battle in the 32 event competition dubbed as the biggest tennis tournament in the Oceania. Players will compete in the veteran, senior and junior category and be played on 10 courts including six grass courts and four Astro turfs. Jacobe, Apisah win June 4, 2013 | Filed under: Fiji Sports | Posted by: newsroom By SHEIK DEAN New winners were crowned during the 106th Jack’s of Fiji Tennis Open at Denarau Golf and Racquet Club in Nadi yesterday. The Men’s Open Singles was up for grabs as Mark Shanahan of Australia did not make it for the tournament. William O’Connell of Fiji met Cyril Jacobe of Vanuatu taking the first set lead with a huge margin of 6-1. Jacobe showed good skills and strength taking also the second set, 6-4. Defending champion of Ladies Open Singles and Fiji number one Tarani Kamoe was unsuccessful to retain her title. Kamoe was in control of the first set against Marcia Tere-Apisah of Papua New Guinea winning 6-4. Apisah came back in the second set giving Kamoe a tougher challenge turning the table around winning by the same margin 6-4 win.
The match went into the third set with Apisah giving her very best thrashing Kamoe 6-2. National coach Naga Reddy said the final was truly a match to watch with a very close margin game for Kamoe and Apisah. “We are happy with the tournament turn out as tennis is growing bigger and better each year. “Unfortunately both Fiji players lost in the final and that’s not the end. There is always another chance to make your mark. “This loss should not be considered as a failure but as a chance to improve on the areas which needs attention. “Tennis Fiji is proud of our players as making it through the finals was not easy and as the saying goes no pain, no gain, added Reddy. Jacobe has represented Pacific Oceania region at Davis Cup and has a lot of experience at international level with his recent appearance at Mont Dore Open in New Caledonia 2012.
