Yura means ‘welcome’. We acknowledge that the land on which we gather was first cared for by the people of Quandamooka country. Traditional We pay respect to the traditional Custodians custodians who have walked this land for longer than recorded history. May our spirits grow strong together as one.
Heavenly Father, We give thanks for the Oblates and the entire community who forged Iona College into existence to serve local needs in the Archdiocese for the past sixty years. Like those who have gone before us, fill our souls with your compassion for others, fire our hearts with your courage and infinite love, bring us health in body and spirit, that we may serve you with all our strength, so that all may live, learn, lead and serve in the Oblate spirit. Touch gently our lives, which you have created, now and forever. Amen.

Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) Awarded at the completion of the senior phase of learning: • have to have been successful - met a set standard • there must be a sufficient amount of learning.
QCE Rigour • Therequirements of students in the new QCE are greater. • Theminimum standard to pass a course is a C standard. • Tobe awarded credits, this must be achieved in both Years 11-12.
Why a new subject selection opportunity? We are preparing students for the new senior system. Students will not be able to change subjects as they have in the current system and therefore we need to get it right from the outset. No more than one change is advised. We have invested time in Year 9 to support this: • Bullseye Careers Quiz • Prerequisites • QCE awareness • career presentations (including TAFE QLD)
Cognition • At Iona, this year in particular, we have focussed our lessons on skill development rather than content acquisition. • The subjects your sons will study in senior identify 75 cognitive verbs that need to be mastered by the end of Year 12. • This semester Year 9 have one lesson a fortnight to introduce them to the cognitive verbs. Over the semester, their teachers will immerse them in the verbs in all subject areas. • This brain work is a challenge! It is tiring and it is hard work. • It is very different to our past practice at Iona College. • Year 9 have proved to us they are up for it.
Mental Process Complete the following task: • In your head • No discussion • 30 seconds
Mental Process • Describe a goth
Evidence of Cognition Before A goth is a person who has different tastes in style and lifestyle. They usually have long black hair and listen to head-banging music.
The Process Step 1 – identify the verb Step 2 – define and understand the verb Step 3 – select a graphic organiser to organise ideas and thinking Step 4 – use sentence starters and connectives to write a response Step 5 – read and reflect on response to improve
Cognition After The major quality of a goth is someone who finds beauty in things others consider dark. While most people depict goths as being depressed, dark and shy, they tend to love laughter but more in the black comedy way. Additionally, goths tend to depict themselves as hard-core romantics, dreamy realists and cynical idealists. Other less important features of a goth include heavy makeup and dark clothes.
