Today we welcome the Folkestone Invicta players, staff and supporters to Hartsdown Park. We hope everyone enjoyed the festive season and is as excited as us to get this new year of football underway. Traditionally matches with Folkestone Invicta are close fought and we anticipate today’s game to be no different. We hope it will be a great watch for all the supporters in this much-anticipated game. This match-day magazine is larger than usual with extra end-of-year statistics, articles, and a match report on the recent contest with Cray Wanderers. We hope you enjoy it along with the game this afternoon. Up the Gate! #TimeForHeroes NEXT HOME: Hornchurch Saturday 15th January 2022 Kick-Off 3PM NEXT AWAY: Bowers & Pitsea Monday 3rd January 2022 Kick-Off 3PM 3
From the Chairman Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Hartsdown Park for our first game of 2022. A very warm welcome and Happy New Year to our old friends and rivals Folkestone Invicta. I was very pleased with the Cray result as games around Christmas can be tricky especially when you factor in players missing because of Covid. A win was a great way to see out 2021 and give us a platform from which to build in the new year. Historically games against Invicta have been very close with a fairly even spread of wins. However, in more recent memory Invicta have had the edge over us and we need to change that today. In Smith and Yusuff Invicta have a strike force that can (and regularly does) cause teams problems and our defence will have to be on top of their game to keep a clean sheet. However, we have two players ourselves, in Bola and Greenhalgh, who can cause problems, hopefully they keep up their excellent goal scoring form today. December saw the departure of Charlotte Richardson from Margate after five years working with the Club. During her time with the Gate Charlotte has been a professional and creative force helping to give us a fantastic online presence, player interviews, delivered community projects, live match commentary during lockdown when we were streaming games, three series of the excellent “unlocking the gate” and much, much more. Charlotte has now moved on to work on various projects with Charlton Athletic, BBC Final Score, BBC radio th and Chelsea FC amongst others whilst also working on her own 8 Wonder Programme and still working closely with the Kent FA. On behalf of everyone at Margate FC I would like to say thank you for your hard work and dedication over the past five years and we wish you every success in the future. I would also like to say thank you to all of those that contributed to our food bank drive in the build up to Christmas. Together with our Youth Section we managed to give out food and toys to many of those less fortunate than ourselves at Christmas. Let’s see in the New Year in style with a very noisy Hartsdown Park and three points. Happy New Year to you all and thank you for all of your support throughout 2021. Up the Gate! Ricky Owen 4
From the Manager Good afternoon and a Happy New Year to everyone! I’d like to start by welcoming Neil and his staff and team to Hartsdown Park for this derby game. Folkestone are having a great season and I’m sure will be pushing for the title come the end of the season! Looking back at recent results we had a great result against Worthing and we’re desperate to back it up against Wingate but unfortunately Covid played it’s part and we lost a lot of players and staff members which was really frustrating. Thankfully we got back to winning ways against Cray and I have to say our support was different class so hopefully you can replicate that for the boys today. Moving in to the new year we have to keep improving as a side and as a club and I can assure you it’s something we are working very hard to do! Hopefully we can get a bit more consistency and keep everyone fit and have a really good second half of the season. Once again Happy New Year . Jay 5
SUPPORTERS CLUB Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the players, officials and fans of our near neighbours and Kent rivals Folkestone to Hartsdown Park for our first home game of 2022. We trust you have had a good Christmas and are not struggling after seeing in the New Year last night. Local derbies are traditional over the Christmas period so hopefully we should get a bumper crowd and the noise that goes with it to lift the players and create an awesome atmosphere at our home fixtures. With our home results yo-yoing from the high of beating League Leaders Worthing on the Tuesday to the slender defeat to struggling Wingate four days later all supporters would love to see consistency in our form and putting games to bed with the players giving 100%. In the run up to Christmas, on the night before the Wingate and Finchley game, we heard the worrying news that stalwart club official Peter Cove had suffered multiple heart incidents resulting in a stay in hospital. Peter has been associated with the club for many years and has been a supporter since he was a young lad in short trousers. His work at the club implementing the Health and Safety Laws requirements has been essential to ensure Margate FC comply with the regulations on a daily basis as well as every step of the ground redevelopment. His efforts to make sure there are enough stewards at every Margate home game has never been easy, to get people to volunteer to turn up three hours before a game and stay an hour after, setting up and clearing away safety barriers and cones and to keep all football fans safe whilst at Hartsdown Park for the match. In addition Peter has worked hard with the links with the Margate Legends to get the likes of Brian Hughes and Bryan Clifton to our Legends Days over the years. The Supporters Club wish Peter a speedy recovery and hope to see him back at his spiritual home as quickly as possible. Additionally, Covid has hit the playing and non-playing staff recently. Sadly, it is not just a cold as some would have you think and our team selection has been affected for several games and having to be rewritten on the day of the match. One of those knocked back by the virus has been grounds man Graham Ives resulting in his and his family’s isolation for the Worthing game and over the Christmas period. Hopefully everyone concerned can recover from the virus and be up and running again as soon as possible. The Supporters Club are pleased to announce the appointment of long term Margate fan and member David Payne as its new Vice Chairman. David is another one of those Margate fans who travels home and away to Margate games as well as helping the club in several ways behind the scenes. Also taking up a new role is Ryan Day as the club secretary. Ryan is a dad with a lad in the Margate Youth team plus volunteers on match days helping at the turnstiles and club shop. Here is hoping 2022 can only be better than the last two years and there is a return to normality. The Ma Gator has returned to Hartsdown Park and will be at home matches to meet and greet our younger supporters. Membership of the Mini Gators Club is only £1 with benefits including a badge and discounts from local businesses. More details can be found on the leaflets being handed out by the Supporters Hut. The Supporters Club would like to thank all the fans who donated to the Isla Caton Fund at the Wingate game. We raised over £220 which has been forwarded on to the cause. 6

THIS IS YOUR CLUB: HELP US HELP THEM FOR YOU. Fifty, Twenty-five, Ten—A look back in the MFC Archives 1st January 1972: Just prior to Christmas we had a visit from Poole Town in the Southern League Cup Second Round Replay after a goalless draw down in Dorset. Watched by 625 fans Margate started brightly with Kevin Barry (fresh from Chelsea where his opportunities were limited) forcing Poole defender Eyden into lobbing his own goalkeeper in the third minute. Ten minutes later the visitors were level when a low drive beat home keeper Paul Thomas, however on 31 minutes an Alan Butterfield free kick was prodded home by Dave Jarman. Gillingham loanee Henry Hill was denied his only goal for the club due to an off side call before Eddie Clayton wrapped up the result. Success on the field came at a cost off it with the first game costing Margate £40 and this one Poole presented expenses of £103 at a time admission prices were about 50p. Today we had the home tie of a double header with Dartford in the league. Following a one all draw at Watling Street where Barry scored for us, Margate found themselves facing a dominant Dartford in the return. Bruce Walker scored in the 4th minute directly from a free kick from outside of the penalty area before the Darts took a 2 – 1 lead. We had to wait until the 86th minute when Colin Clewlow latched onto another Walker free kick to head home. It is now nine unbeaten for the Gate. Played 22 Won 7 Drew 4 Lost 11 Goals For 31 Goals Against 41 Points 18 26th December 1996: Despite Kent based Tonbridge, Dartford, Erith and Belvedere and Fisher being in our division the Southern League fixture committee decided that our Boxing Day game would be against St Leonards Stamcroft from Sussex. Thankfully it was a home game and a crowd of 404 watched the match which was our second game against the team in second place in the Southern League Southern Division in a fortnight after facing them in the League Cup. Sadly it was a second defeat as well as we lost 1 – 2 with Lee Spiller getting our goal and his first of the season. Great things were hoped for 18 year Spiller although this was his first game back after a three match ban following an elbowing incident in the game at Yate in November. Margate did not have a game on New Years Day this season and also no match until 11th January. Played 21 Won 12 Drew 2 Lost 7 Goals For 38 Goals Against 28 Points 38 31st December 2011: Back to winning ways for a Margate team with prolific goal scorer Kwesi Appiah back in the side after injury. Travelling on a Tuesday afternoon to Bromley’s Hayes Lane ground we faced Cray Wanderers who surprised the visitors by taking a lead in the 3rd minute. Within ten minutes though Margate were ahead when first Curtis Robinson then Appiah scored but on the stroke of half time Cray were back level. Margate lost defender Laurence Ball to a head injury at the start of the second half but minutes later Appiah restored Margate’s lead and on 67 minutes Dan Stubbs secured the three points to give the final score of 4 – 2. Four days later we travelled up the M2 again and over the Dartford crossing to Aveley. The 3 – 1 score line did not give the home side justice to their hard work and the game was described as a smash and grab affair. Another early goal for Margate came through Tom Bradbrook playing up 7 front as Curtis Robinson fell back to cover the missing full backs on Margate’s injury list. Aveley equalised on 20 minutes and tried pressing forward on a sticky pitch not helping the quality of football. In the second half more pressure from Margate resulted in Appiah scoring again on 57 minutes and right at the end skipper Craig Cloke sent a free kick in front of the benches over the head of the stranded home keeper to silence the Aveley physio who had been giving him stick during the match. Today's Opponents: FOLKESTONE INVICTA FC Folkestone Invicta Football Club, which was formed in 1936 and played in the East Kent Amateur League, took over use of the Cheriton Road ground in early 1991 after the demise of the old Folkestone club who had enjoyed a long history in the Southern League. Under manager Gary Staniforth, Invicta joined the Winstonlead Kent League and completed the Division Two league and cup double during the 1991-92 season, also winning the Kent Intermediate Shield that season. Invicta achieved senior status and joined Division One of the Winstonlead Kent League, making steady progress in its first two seasons at this level under club stalwart Staniforth. The nearest the club came to another trophy during these two seasons was when they lost the 1994 Plaaya Kent Senior Trophy Final 3-1 FORM GUIDE against Alma Swanley at Gravesend & Northfleet’s Stonebridge Road. WON Former Folkestone, Dover Athletic, Hythe Town, Crawley Town and v Merstham Sittingbourne player Tim Hulme then took over as player-manager for the 6—1 1994-95 season. Invicta at one point chased the Kent League treble that season, but ended up empty handed. The club were runners up for a second successive season in the Plaaya Kent Senior Trophy after losing a penalty WON shoot out in the final against Deal Town at Dover’s Crabble ground following a v Haringey Borough 2-2 draw after extra time. 5—0 Invicta entered the F. A. Cup for the first time during the 1994-95 season, beating Hailsham Town and then Southern League Premier Division side DRAW Sittingbourne before going out 2-1 at home to a Worthing side which included v Bishop’s Stortford former Tottenham striker Mark Falco. 0—0 Hopes were high for the 1995-96 season as Invicta strengthened their squad, but things turned sour during the second half of the season as Hulme left the WON club, with his assistant Micky Dix taking over for the remainder of the season. v Enfield Town Former Canterbury City boss Darren Hare was recruited for the 1996-97 3—2 season, but after a poor start he was soon replaced by one-time Folkestone Town manager Denis Hunt, assisted by veteran player Bobby Wilson. It was during this season that a club record 2,332 saw the club play hosts to West Ham United in a benefit game following freak floods in the town. Harry KIT Redknapp brought down a strong West Ham side that won 6-0 and included Portuguese World Cup star Paolo Futre, Julian Dicks, a young Frank Lampard and Stan Lazaridis. It was the arrival of manager Neil Cugley from Ashford Town during the summer of 1997 which was to provide the catalyst for the return of Southern League football to the town. Cugley made an immediate impact as promotion was achieved by finishing runners up to Herne Bay in 1997-98 when the club also finished runners up in First Strip the Plaaya Kent Senior Trophy for the third time after losing 1-0 in the final to Greenwich Borough at Ashford Town’s Homelands ground. But under manager Cugley the club were to be permanent fixtures in the top folkestoneinvictafc.co.uk three of their respective division for three successive seasons. 8
The club continued to make good progress in 1998-99 as Southern League football returned to Folkestone. Invicta finished third in the Dr. Martens League Southern Division behind champions Havant & Waterlooville and runners up Margate, with the promotion race going to the final day of the season. Invicta also reached the final of the 1999 Kent Senior Cup where they lost 1-0 at home to then Conference club Welling United. The club also made its mark in the F.A. Umbro Trophy by beating Conference club Hayes to reach the Third Round before going out 8-4 in an incredible tie away to three-times winners Woking. The 1999-2000 season saw the club achieve more progress with promotion to the Dr. Martens League Premier Division as runners up to Fisher Athletic (London) in the Eastern Division. Again there was final day heartbreak for Invicta as the championship went right to the wire with Fisher winning away to Newport (Isle of Wight) to make Invicta’s final day win at Wisbech in vein. In victa went down 1-0 at home to holders and eventual winners Kingstonian in the F.A. Umbro Trophy and again reached the Kent Senior Cup Final, but went down again, this time 3-0 to Gravesend & Northfleet, their fifth successive defeat in a cup final as a senior side. It was a good season all round for the club as the reserves won the Kent Intermediate Cup and the youth team won their section of the MUSH Kent Youth League and reached the 2 nd Round of the Times Sponsored F. A. Youth Cup before bowing out 6-0 against a strong Millwall side at the New Den The 2000-01 season saw the club compete in the Dr Martens League Premier Division for the first time and Invicta achieved their objective of staying up. In the process they were the only side to win away to Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion at Eton Park. The 2001-02 season saw an improved Invicta side briefly top the Premier Division table for the first time in the club’s history during the opening weeks of the season. The club reached the 4th Qualifying Round of the F. A. Cup but were beaten 5-1 in a replay away to Welling United after drawing the initial tie 1-1 with a lucrative trip to Reading as the prize. The season ended on a dramatic note as Invicta 3-3 home draw with Tamworth on the final day of the season denied the Lambs the championship – that game was watched by a crowd of 1,277, the highest ever home attendance for an Invicta league match. That record was broken in August 2002 when the visit of neighbours Dover Athletic attracted a crowd of 1,446 to Cheriton Road. But the 2002-03 season was to prove a difficult season for Invicta as financial constraints took their toll. The club finished bottom of the table and was relegated back down to the Eastern Division. The 2003-04 season was more successful for Invicta as the club finished fifth in the Eastern Division to win promotion via the re-structuring of the non-league game. Highlights of the season were a club record unbeaten 24-match league run and reaching the Third Round of the F. A. Trophy before bowing out at home to Nationwide Conference club Stevenage Borough. 9
The club switched from the Southern League to the Isthmian (Isthmian) Premier League for the 2004-05 season and finished in a mid table position. Striker James Dryden broke both the club’s record senior appearance and goal scoring records during the season and a new home league record attendance of 2,278 saw Invicta win 1-0 at home to local rivals Dover Athletic over Christmas. A 2,390 crowd saw Invicta win the return 1-0 over the Easter weekend. But the club was to suffer real tragedy on Tuesday April 12th, 2005 when striker Paul Sykes collapsed on the pitch and died during a Kent Senior Cup semi final against one of his former clubs Margate. Invicta subsequently pulled out of the competition to allow Margate to play another of Paul’s former clubs Dover Athletic in the final at Folkestone when the Kent footballing community came together to remember one of its most popular characters. Folkestone Invicta went into the 2005-06 season in good spirits with a new sponsorship deal with local coach company Buzzlines. The club subsequently enjoyed its best ever run in the F. A. Cup, going down 2-1 away to Chester City in the First Round after leading 1-0 at half time thanks to an early Adam Flanagan goal which was shown on Match of the Day. The reserves also finished as champions of the Kentish Observer Football League Division Two and the club also enjoyed great success at youth level. The 2006-07 season saw the club maintain its Isthmian Premier League status on the final day of the season with a 1-1 draw away to Carshalton. But the next season was to see the club relegated on the final day of the season with a 1-0 home defeat against Maidstone United in a winner-takes-all encounter. 2008-09 saw the club in the Isthmian League Division One South but a financial crisis put paid to early season hopes of promotion and the club put its faith in a predominantly young, local, up-and-coming side. That faith came to fruition during a truly remarkable 2009-10 season that saw the club win promotion from the Isthmian League Division One South and reach the final of the Kent Senior Cup (losing 3-1 to Sittingbourne). Operating with a small squad, Invicta were denied the championship after being docked ten points for entering into a CVA agreement but were promoted via the play-offs. Croydon Athletic clinched the championship with a 0-0 draw on a memorable night at Invicta after both towns had paid tribute to Rifleman Peter Aldridge of A Company 4 Rifles, who had died in an explosion in Afghanistan, aged just 19, becoming the 250 th UK serviceman to die in the campaign. New Invicta chairman Lynn Woods’ efforts in staging the commemoration were rewarded with a 2,134 crowd. Invicta – who conceded just 23 goals in 42 league games – recovered from the disappointment of missing out on the championship by winning the play-offs. A thrilling semi final saw the club come back from 2-0 down at half time against Leatherhead to force a 2-2 draw after extra time and win 5-3 on penalties. Godalming Town were then beaten in the final as Invicta returned to the Isthmian Premier League. The club also won the Isthmian League Division One South Fair Play Award during 2009-10 and again in 2012-13. But continuing financial constraints meant that the club found life back in the Isthmian Premier League difficult and it was relegated back down to Division One South in 2010-11. For the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons the club reached the semi finals of the play offs, losing away to Dulwich Hamlet and Maidstone United respectively. In 2013-14 the club finished as Isthmian League Division One South runners up and reached the play off final after beating Hastings United 3-2 after extra time in the semi final but lost the final 3-1 on penalties at home to Leatherhead following a 1-1 draw after extra time. The club also had young striker Johan Ter Horst signed by Premiership club Hull City during May 2014. Folkestone Invicta won both the Division One South’s Fair Play and Respect awards in 2013 -14, the third successive season that it had been rewarded for its disciplinary record. The club again finished as runners up in the Isthmian League Division One South during 2014-15 and the season was again to end in home play-off heartbreak as Invicta lost the final 3-0 against Merstham after beating Whyteleafe 2-1 after extra time in the 10
semi final. It was a different story in 2015-16 as Invicta won the Isthmian League Division One South championship by 24 points and manager Neil Cugley completed 1,000 matches as the club’s manager. During the summer of 2016 the club prepared for life back in the Isthmian League Premier Division and sold striker Harry Smith to League Division One club Millwall. The club achieved its objective of staying in the Premier Division which was confirmed with a 3-0 final day win away to Grays Athletic amid a party atmosphere at Aveley and also won the division’s Respect award. Invicta stepped up a gear during the 2017-18 season scoring over 100 goals in the Isthmian League Premier Division and reaching the Play Offs where they lost 4-0 in the semi final away to Hendon. It had been an exciting end to the season as the club lost on penalties in the Kent Reliance Senior Cup Final away to Maidstone United and finished their scheduled league programme with a 2-2 draw away to Billericay Town where a stoppage time Jamie O’Hara screamer denied them a league ‘double’ over the champions. Despite winning its last five matches during April, Invicta narrowly missed out on the play offs on the final day of the 2018-19 season. Invicta were still very much in the Isthmian League Premier Division promotion race and in the semi finals of the League Cup when the 2019-20 season came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The start of the curtailed 2020-21 season was a strange time with COVID protocols and procedures and with elite level sport continuing behind-closed-doors, Invicta was for a short spell one of the best supported clubs in the country. Match Report: The Blues secure victory against Cray Wanderers On Monday The Blues travelled to face Cray Wanderers in their final match of 2021 in the Isthmian League Premier Division. Right from the off the match was fast paced while both teams were battling for chances on goal. Initially the hosts were controlling the ball a little more with a few close chances on the Margate goal. The hosts took the lead in the 10th minute when Kyle Reid received the ball on the left wing and cut into the edge of the box, striking the ball through the crowd into the bottom left corner. Cray Wanderers 1-0 Margate Margate were dangerous on the counter attack, playing the ball onto the wing and moving into the hosts box but they were struggling to seriously threaten Cray’s goal. Margate were close to equalising in the 23rd minute after Bola’s dangerous run into the box where he was tackled and the ball fell to Godo however he couldn't quite get a shot off in time. Margate equalised in the 36th minute when Ben Greenhalgh took a strike from range and his deflected shot dropped to the edge of the box. Godo capitalised and ran onto the loose ball beating the keeper calmly and slotting it into the open net. Cray Wanderers 1-1 Margate Neither team could gain the upper hand in the first half and the match was end to end throughout. The teams were tied going into half time. At the start of the second half The Blues were starting to gain more control of the match, utilising their pace to make runs down the wings on the counter attack. In the 51st minute Margate took the lead when Crossley Lema made a darting run down the right wing and Lewis Knight played the ball onto his run with precision. Lema took the ball in stride into the box and fired it into the near post past the keeper. Cray Wanderers 1-2 Margate Margate nearly extended their lead in the 69th minute after the ball fell to Godo in the hosts box but his shot was just high and smashed against the crossbar. Margate again came agonisingly close to extending their league in the 71st minute after Montel took a strike from range and the keeper palmed the ball across his goal line. The Cray keeper managed to claw it out of the goal and no goal was given. Almost immediately down the other end with Margate still in shock, Chris Dickson equalised for Cray as his shot from range deflected over Ben Bridle-Card. Cray Wanderers 2-2 Margate. Margate were still determined to take all of the points from this game and they continued to press on. The Blues took the lead through sheer tenacity in the 77th minute from Greenhalgh’s corner. The corner initially fell to Ben Swift who headed it towards goal. The Cray keeper palmed the shot to the side but Knight was there to head it home and put his side once again in the lead. Cray Wanderers 2-3 Margate. 14
The rest of the match was end to end and hard fought but Margate were strong in defence and continued to cause trouble for the hosts. In the dying minutes Margate controlled the ball and the pace of play to see the game out and secure their three points. Margate XI: Ben Bridle-Card, Crossley Lema, Joe Anderson, Montel Agyemang, Lewis Knight, Ben Swift , Sam Blackman, Vance Bola, Ben Greenhalgh, James Bessey-Saldanha, Martial Godo. Fixture Peculiarities As we all know, COVID has caused some issues over the past few seasons, with the last two seasons being curtailed. This has lead to some interesting gaps between league matches. During this article a match refers to a game between two teams, either home or away, while a fixture refers to a specific team being at home In more benign times there would be an average of around 180 days between matches, and a maximum of around 620 days between fixtures, depending on the start and end dates of any particular season. During the last three seasons though, there has been a gap between matches involving Margate of at least 329 days (v Carshalton Athletic) up to a staggering 847 days (v Kingstonian). There are 3 other teams where the gap between matches has not been over a year, against Enfield Town, Hornchurch and Leatherhead, and 2 other teams where there has been a gap of over 2 years between matches, against Potters Bar Town and Folkestone Invicta There are currently four fixtures involving Margate that have yet to be played since the start of the 2019/20 season; these are our trip to Potters Bar Town, currently scheduled for 11/01/22, and our home games against Folkestone Invicta (today), Horsham (05/02/22) and Kingstonian (23/04/22). Taking into account the fact that Horsham were only promoted into the league for the start of the 2019/20 season, it will be 3598 days since Horsham visited Hartsdown Park in the league when they are due to play on the 5th February. 29 of our 42 fixtures have a gap of over 630 days. Looking at the league as a whole, at the end of 2021 there are still 36 fixtures that have not been played since the start of the 2019/20 season, with 2 to be played today. However it will not be until the last day of the season, with the Haringey Borough v Folkestone Invicta, Margate v Kingstonian and Merstham v Carshalton Athletic fixtures having been played, that 1 complete seasons worth of fixtures will have been played since the beginning of the 2019/20 season. There are 2 fixtures that haven't been played in over 10 years (Horsham v Kingstonian and Leatherhead v Cray Wanderers) as well as 3 fixtures that have never been played (Bognor Regis Town v Bowers & Pitsea, Folkestone Invicta v Bowers & Pitsea and Merstham v Cheshunt). By David Richardson THE APPEAL of football at Christmas showed its popularity once more even in challenging conditions for supporters. Despite Omicron cases rising over 100,000 in England and the weather being as wet and windy as ever, fans still turned out in big numbers for the festive fixtures. Attendances in Non-League have been impressive after fears the pandemic may put off some spectators returning to matches. But football – coupled with the hard work of club volunteers – has shown it can be a safe space. The failed European Super League plan is likely to have also benefitted the lower levels with some supporters turning their back on the top-flight. Non-League’s affordability remains as does the ‘real’ feel of attending matches and standing on terraces. The game as these levels is continuing to grow and the Boxing Day schedule provided further proof of that. Stockport County welcomed 8,896 for their Boxing Day clash with Altrincham. It was the highest crowd on the day outside of the Championship and the club’s biggest league attendance since 2008. Elsewhere in the National League, there was 3,830 at Torquay United in their game against Yeovil Town. A crowd of 3,759 was at Hayes Lane for Bromley’s televised fixture with Southend United as 3,699 took in the local derby between Aldershot Town and Woking. In National League North, AFC Fylde and Chorley had 2,608 spectators while the derby between Spennymoor Town and Darlington saw a crowd of 2,404. There was also 2,082 at AFC Telford United for the visit of Chester. Dorking Wanderers welcomed a record crowd of 2,048 on National League South and put on a show with an 8-0 victory over promotion rivals Havant & Waterlooville. Tonbridge Angels had the next highest of 1,669 against Maidstone United followed by Oxford City with 1,208. The Northern Premier League had a combined total of more than 30,000 in attendance for their final games of the year on December 27th. There were ten four-figure crowds across the four divisions, including more than 2,000 at FC United, Matlock Town and Marine. A total of 12,213 fans went through the turnstiles in the 11 Premier Division games, averaging at 1,110 per game. In the West Division, the average crowd was even bigger coming in at 1,155 across the seven games, including a 2,150 sell-out for Marine’s local derby with Bootle, who won 3-0. There were 1,679 at Clitheroe for their 5-1 win over Colne, while 1,100 saw Leek Town win away at Kidsgrove Athletic. There was a four-figure crowd in the East Division too, where Marske United lost at home to Stockton Town in front of 1,250. Horsham hosted 1,284 for their fixture with Lewes in the Isthmian League Premier while 1,314 were at Bury Town against Stowmarket Town in the North division. In the South East, Herne Bay won 7-2 against Whitstable Town in front of 1,119. Banbury United attracted their biggest league attendance for 52 years of 1,221. The Southern League Premier Central leaders beat Stratford Town 1-0. Bromsgrove Sporting had 1,658 against Stourbridge and Hednesford drew 1,142 for their game with Rushall Olympic. In the Southern League Division One South (Step 4), Frome Town’s crowd was 1,103 for their 3 -3 draw with Melksham Town. Phoenix club Macclesfield FC, at Step 5, had the biggest attendance on December 27 of 4,353 and there was 972 at Step 6 side Steeton AFC. The depth, and support, of the English pyramid continues to be incredible. It was also heart-warming to see many Non-League clubs supporting the #NoHomeKit campaign over the Christmas fixtures to raise money and awareness around homelessness. The idea - created by charity Shelter – called for clubs to ditch their home kit and instead wear an away or third kit in an act of support and solidarity for people without a home. 21
