| president’s message Happy New Year to the ITE Family! As we start afresh having turned the calendar page, I have high INTERNATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTION hopes that this year will be one filled with new initiatives and opportunities to promote our vision as the organization of choice for transportation professionals. That vision, I believe, starts with International President each of us. Alyssa A. Reynolds Rodriguez, P.E., PTOE (F) Director, Information Technology, Think back to what motivated you to become a member City of Henderson, NV, USA of ITE. Was it the excitement of being in college and the International Vice President camaraderie of the Student Chapter? Was it the desire to learn Beverly Thompson Kuhn, Ph.D., P.E., PMP (F) more about the profession? Was it a colleague who invited Division Head and Research Fellow, Texas A&M BEVERLY THOMPSON Transportation Institute, College Station, TX, USA you to a meeting? Was it the networking opportunities? Job KUHN, PH.D., P.E., PMP (F) prospects? Technical resources? All of these? For someone in our ITE International President Immediate Past International President Ransford S. McCourt, P.E., PTOE (F) organization, THAT was their reason. It is personal. Portland, OR, USA My story is like many of yours. I first joined ITE as a student when I recognized the organization would be an integral part of my transportation future. After transitioning to Directors a professional member, my involvement in ITE expanded in numerous ways. I have served Edward Soldo, P.Eng. (F) ITE for nearly three decades as a Section officer, Technical Committee member and Chair, (Canadian District) Chief Road Official, City of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Chair of the Traffic Engineering Council and the Coordinating Council (now the Council Andrew Velasquez, P.E., PTOE (M) Leadership Team). My decision to join ITE has not steered me wrong. Over the years, I have (Florida Puerto Rico District) Program Manager - Planning and Traffic Engineering, AECOM, Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA found ITE to be one of the best investments I have ever made in my career. My decision to Jeff Young, P.E., PTOE (M) run for International President was a logical progression in my personal growth as an active (Great Lakes District) Roadway Section Manager, HDR, Rosemont, IL, USA member and leader in ITE. I wanted to serve our profession and advance our mission to Daniel Przychodzki (M) provide our members with the tools they need to serve their communities and shape the future (Global District) Team Leader, Transport, City of Greater Dandenong, Victoria, Australia of transportation in a meaningful way. Gerard A. Baxter, P.E., PTOE (M) Over the next year, I will be working with other members of the International Board of (Mid-Colonial District) Vice President, Johnson, Mirmiran and Thompson, Washington, DC, USA Direction to invest in our future by establishing the framework to help grow and diversify our J. Andrew Swisher, P.E., PTOE (M) membership at both the student and professional levels. (Missouri Valley District) Project Manager, HR Green, Inc., Des Moines, IA, USA The differences in our backgrounds enrich our experiences as members of ITE and the Karen Aspelin, P.E., PTOE (F) communities in which we live and serve. Expanding the diversity of our profession as well (Mountain District), Technical Leader, Olsson, Colorado Springs, CO, USA as our membership begins with our student members. The earlier we introduce students to Gordon E. Meth, P.E., PTOE, PTP, RSP1 (F) transportation as a career path, the better the chances they will join us. To that end, I have (Northeastern District) Transportation Engineering Expert Witness, Robson Forensic, Cedar Knolls, NJ, USA started reaching out to several professional engineering organizations whose membership K. Scott Walker, Jr., P.E. (M) centers on communities of color: Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, American Indian (Southern District), Project Leader, Toyota Motor North America, Georgetown, KY, USA Science and Engineering Society, and National Society of Black Engineers. As part of this Melisa D. Finley, P.E. (M) (Texas District), Research Engineer, outreach, I am working with their leadership to understand their structure and governance and Texas A&M Transportation Institute, College Station, TX, USA to identify synergistic opportunities for collaboration to increase our visibility and engagement Neelam Dorman, T.E. (F) (Western District) Traffic Project Manager, with their student members. HDR, Portland, OR, USA This year, we will also begin to more directly engage with the transportation planning Mark Spencer, P.E. (F) (Western District), Senior Principal, community to understand what would attract them to ITE and how we can provide value W-Trans, Oakland, CA, USA to their membership. Look for town hall events and other engagement opportunities in the coming months. ITE Council Leadership Team Chair I look forward to serving you over what I am sure will be a very productive and energizing Eric Rensel (M) (Coordinating Council Chair) Vice President, year…in person! I am always available to hear from you and welcome your ideas about how we Gannett Fleming, Mechanicsburg, PA, USA can make ITE the organization of choice for those looking to transform the world. ITE is committed to advancing the role of women within its leadership ranks and has joined the MobilityXX Pledge, a campaign to increase the number of women in the transportation industry by 10 percent over the next 10 years. Led by ITS America, The Ray, and WTS International, the pledge asks public and private sector organizations to commit to this goal by completing two or more action steps—like baselining gender and diversity makeup and measuring annually, diversifying programming to ensure varied perspectives are represented, and more—over the next year. Visit www.mobilityxx.org to learn more, and look for updates on the MobilityXX Pledge from ITE throughout the year. 8 J a nuar y 2022 ite j o u rn al
