Overview • New features in Windows 8.1 • New features in Windows 2012 R2 • Deploying Windows Tips and Tricks • Deploying Office 2013 Tips and Tricks • GoverLAN Tips
Windows 8.1 Editions • Windows 8.1 RT – Cannot join a domain – Only available pre-installed on ARM-based devices such as slates – Includes Office • Windows 8.1 – Cannot join a domain – Basic edition of Windows for personal use • Windows 8.1 Pro – Can join a domain – Designed for managed network users • Windows 8.1 Enterprise – Same features as Pro with the addition of: • AppLocker • Windows to Go • Direct Access
What’s New in Windows 8.1? • Start Button is Back! • Boot directly to the desktop option • Snapping is better • Search "everywhere." • Control the Windows 8.1 Start Screen Layout with Group Policy (Enterprise only) • IE 11 • Native WIDI (Miracast) • Find additional new feature info at: http://tinyurl.com/neej5jq
Start Button is Back.. • Doesn’t bring back the old “Start Menu” • Left click Start button takes you to the “Start Screen” • Right click Start button to bring up quick access to popular settings
Snapping is Better • Windows 8 was 75% - 25% • Windows 8.1 allows for different splits and more apps • Larger monitors support up to 8 open apps in snapped views
Search Everywhere • In Windows 8 Search Results were divided into categories which at times could be confusing • Search Results in Windows 8.1 now default to “Everywhere”
Exploring Windows 8.1 App store • Requires a Microsoft Live ID • Limited to 81 devices per account (up from 5) • Updates with new apps frequently • Integrated searching of the store from charms bar • Modern Apps can be downloaded quickly • Currently no “control” of App Store content • Can be disabled via Group Policy
Server 2012 R2 Editions • Hyper-V – Hyper-V only Server no other roles can be installed – Free • Foundation – OEM only – 1 processor limit and 15 users • Essentials – 2 processor limit and 25 users – No virtualization rights (1 physical or 1 virtual) • Standard – 64 processor limit and no user limit – 2 virtual machines licensed per copy • Datacenter – 64 processor limit and no user limit – unlimited virtual machines licensed per copy
Server 2012 R2 HyperV Changes • Hyper-V – Shared Virtual Hard Drives • Allows multiple virtual machines to access the same virtual hard disk (VHDX) file. • Used in clustering situations – Virtual Machine Generation 2 machine types (Support for UEFI, Secure Boot, Boot to SCSI, PXE with standard NIC) – Enhanced Session Mode (Allows Redirection of the following hardware into the VM: • Audio, Printers, Clipboard, Smart cards, Drives, USB devices, Supported Plug and Play devices – Automatic Virtual Machine Activation • Activates the VM if the host server is activated. • More Hyper-V info at: – http://tinyurl.com/m9sue2v
Interesting Server 2012 R2 Feature Additions • Workplace Join / Device Registration – Feature that installs a certificate on the device and enables single sign-on via ADFS – Including Windows RT for Microsoft’s ARM-based tablets and iOS devices are supported with Android support to follow • Work Folders – Requires Windows 8.1 clients at this time – Seen as a replacement for folder redirection and syncing – Think of as “private cloud” storage that you have complete control over. – Microsoft has stated they are working on supporting Work Folders on Windows 7, Windows 8, & IOS devices. – Requires ADFS, and Intune
Supporting Deployment of Windows 8.1 • Upgrade MDT from 2012 update 1 to 2013 • Upgrade Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) for Windows 8.1 – Both can be upgraded over the top of existing installation, always recommend to backup current config before performing an upgrade. • WDS 2012, or 2012 R2 servers are supported. • Note: Current SEP 12.1.2015.2015 isn’t support on Windows 8.1
MDT 2013 Supports Operating system LTI ZTI UDI Windows 8.1 Windows Server 2012 R2 Windows 8 Windows Server 2012 Windows 7 Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows PE version 5.0
Tips and Tricks for Deployments of Windows 8 and 8.1 with WDS • 32bit vs 64bit images • Why “Out-of-the-Box-Drivers” is your “Friend”? • Removing the Built-in Apps in Windows 8 can cause issues with sysprep
32bit vs 64bit images • MDT is available in both 32bit and 64bit versions. • 64bit version is installed onto the WDS server and is unable to edit 32bit images • Recommend to install MDT 32bit console on a “Windows 8” 32bit client to edit 32bit images. – Connect to the DeploymentShare$ on the WDS server
Out-of-the-Box-Drivers • Recommended to add Drivers into the MDT console prior to capturing and deploying images. – This ensures the drivers will be “Injected” into the image • When you add additional drivers make sure you right click the deployment share and choose “Update Deployment Share” then replace boot wims in WDS console
Removing Built-In Windows 8 Apps • Must run as local Administrator not Domain Administrator – Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage –online – Get-AppXPackage | Remove-AppxPackage
GoverLAN Tips • Check DNS • Verify Remote Registry Services are enabled on the Client • Verify firewalls are disabled on the Client • Use “Batch and Scripts” instead of Software Deployments when deploying to multiple clients
KMS Server DNS entry • _VLMCS under the _tcp zone in the Active Directory Namespace
View client activation status • From a command prompt SLMGR.VBS /DLV
Forcing a KMS activation on a client computer
KMS Server Events
KMS Server events
KMS Server events what is wrong?
Office 2013 Re-Arm • Required prior to capturing image if KMS activation is used • Command line utility OSPPREARM.exe Office Activation Troubleshooting: http://technet.microsoft.com/en- us/library/ee624357.aspx
Office 2013 KMS Activations • Unique count must exceed 5 • From an elevated command prompt at the Office 2013 KMS server execute: – slmgr.vbs /dlv 2E28138A-847F-42BC-9752- 61B03FFF33CD
EES Schools • State hosts your KMS server • If you currently have a KMS server on your local network you will need to decommission that server • Create DNS record in your DNS server console pointing the _VLMCS entry to the State’s hosted KMS server – KMS.K12.SD.US. • See http://members.k12.sd.us FAQ’s for more information
