Best bolting practice BOLTING PRINCIPLES
• Each RotaBolt® stud or bolt is load test calibrated during manufacture to achieve the desired
tension for the application in which it is to be used. Achieving and maintaining
• However, it is still necessary to estimate the tightening force (torque) that needs to be
used, so that the tightening tool selected has sufficient torque power capacity and for any

pre-set requirement. or bolt tension, is essential
• All variants of RotaBolt should be installed following best engineering practice or methodology in assuring bolted joint
prescribed by the site operator to the point at which final tightening is reached.
• Continuing to follow the same tightening pattern, the fasteners should now be tightened until
                                                                                                          integrity. 85% - 90% of all

• Torque values are disregarded at this point as the RotaBolt indicator is the ‘control’ for caused by inaccurate bolt
confirmation of the achievement of the design tension setting.
                                                                                                          tension at installation.
• At the correct level of tension, the fastener has ‘stretched’ the calibrated amount and the RotaBolt
indicator cap or wireless app dashboard will indicate that the fastener has been installed to within
-/+5% of the design tension for the application.
The method of checking the different types of RotaBolt indicator are detailed on the following pages.

International standards
Although requirements may vary between applications, James Walker engineers will use one of the
following international bolting standards as best practice when installing RotaBolt products.
• ASME PCC-1: Guideline for pressure boundary bolted flange joint assembly.
• BS EN 1591-4: Competency in the assembly of the bolted connections of critical service
   pressurized systems.
