SGA ACADEMIC Academic Life at St George’s In what has been a challenging and extraordinary academic year, I am exceptionally proud of our Upper Sixth and Fifth Year pupils who have continued to work hard amid disruption and uncertainty about their qualifications. They have, without exception, shown maturity and resilience and have been a fantastic support to each other as well as excellent role models for the younger girls. At A Level, 90% of grades were awarded at A*-B with a stunning 42% at the highest grade of A*. We were also particularly impressed with the large number of girls who submitted Extended Project Qualifications (EPQs), an independent research task highly regarded by universities, of an exceptionally high standard; 47% attaining A* and 42% A grades. All of the Upper Sixth girls were successful in confirming their university places on results day, with 94% heading off to their first choice of university and no one having to enter clearing. For these girls the most popular destinations will be Durham University (21% of leavers), the University of Exeter (15%), the University of Edinburgh (12%) and the University of Leeds (12%) and examples of the courses they will be studying include Psychology, Geography, Medical Sciences, International Relations, Exercise and Sports Science, Fashion Marketing, Fine Art, History, Filmmaking, and Marketing and Management. At GCSE, the girls collectively and individually performed very well and saw their diligent efforts rewarded whilst managing to keep on top of a wide range of subjects, as is the nature of GCSEs. 37% of grades awarded were the top grade 9, 60% grade 8-9 and 78% grade 7-9. Seven girls in the Fifth Year obtained either straight grade 9s, or straight 9s and one grade 8. We are looking forward to this year group working with the new Upper Sixth girls to lead the School as a strong and capable Sixth Form, as we come together again as a whole school community. We are deeply proud of this conscientious, capable and accomplished cohort of girls. Liz Hewer | Head 3

SGA ACADEMIC Academic Snapshot Although we operate a selective entry procedure here at St George’s, we deliberately encourage a broad range of abilities at the school. What we are looking for is potential, and we measure ourselves on the value that we add for our girls, enabling them to gain at least a grade higher in their GCSEs and A Levels than they would achieve without our specialist support, excellent teaching, small class sizes and extra clinics which we know really make a difference to our pupils’ results. We test all our pupils when they enter the school which enables us to predict their likely GCSE grades and A Level in every subject based on their ability. Not every pupil who enters St George’s is a 10 9/8 grade at GCSE pupil. Most pupils are above national average ability, however, what we pride ourselves on is getting the best results we can in every subject and nurturing our students so that they have choices going forward onto A Level and when looking at their options for university or other post 18 options and beyond. 5

University Life In 2021, girls from St George’s secured a number of places at selective universities. Seven girls achieved places at Durham University, with further successes at Russell Group universities such as Edinburgh, Exeter and Leeds. All the girls achieved the grades required for their first or insurance choices. In the past six years, well over half of all girls have achieved places at Russell Group institutions, and more than four out of five girls have succeeded in their applications to their first or second choice. Students have also gone on to continue their studies at Central St Martins, the Condé Nast College of Fashion, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and Guildford School of Acting. Alongside History, Philosophy and Theology and Economics and Management at Oxford Medicine at UCL and Newcastle and Economics at Durham. Georgians have applied to universities around the world achieving success at New York University, the University of Tokyo and Queen’s University (Canada) amongst many others. Whilst university remains the first choice for most St George’s leavers, we support girls achieving their ambitions in all fields. Whether it is a professional cookery course, finding a job or taking a gap year, we believe that all leavers should follow their dreams. Teachers in the Sixth Form tutor team, as well as the Senior Leadership Team, are involved in ensuring that the experience of senior girls makes the transition to life after School as successful and straight-forward as possible.
