INSIDE THE PUB THANK YOU TO OUR STAFF DPW would like to extend a special thank you to our valued team members who served locally during the historical presidential inauguration on January 20. Public Works ensured maximum support for our public safety partners through our fortification detail and coordination as a departmental representative with the Joint Operations Center (JOC). On behalf of Deputy Commissioner Keith Robinson, we thank those frontline heroines and heroes for embodying the character, service, and integrity of the City of Atlanta Department of Public Works. Please accept our deepest appreciation for a job well done. KUDOS FROM THE COMMUNITY “I wanted to let you know the new [carts] arrived on Tuesday and they are SO NICE! Thank you so much for your great and fast service. It was so wonderful. Leah Henderson “I wanted to acknowledge the two young men [who] picked up my garbage this morning on Gun Club Road. Lately, our trash was being collected on Thursday and not our regular day of Wednesday. Because of that my trash wasn’t at the [curb]. The two young men saw my mom pulling into our driveway and waited on her to get out of her vehicle before walking into the yard and rolling down both trash containers. This made her day because they could have continued with their route but instead, they chose to go above and beyond. She didn’t get a name but I wanted to personally thank those drivers and let them and their supervisor know I appreciate their kind act and that this is what true customer service is about. Will you please find out who the supervisor is for the guys picking up on Gun Club Road and let her know what an outstanding act of kindness her guys showed this morning? Thank you from my mom, Teresia Freeman as well as myself.” Morticia Wilson “Thank you to Shantel Turner for her extraordinary work with bulk pickup. I scheduled a bulk pickup, but the pickup didn’t happen. I was certain that I had done something wrong, so I contacted ATL311. Ms. Turner came out this morning to advise me about my pickup and to reschedule. Thank you, Ms. Turner!! In these challenging times, I am so impressed with the [City] for continuing services. Well done, Atlanta! Grateful Resident, Judy Hammack “We can’t type a ‘THANK YOU’ big enough to show our appreciation! Thank you to everyone involved with the Blair Villa~Poole Creek and Orchard Knob communities cleanup. You all did an awesome job! Thank you so much!” Coreen Dent - (President) SSCC of Atlanta “We Keep the City Rolling” Page Page 21

Patterson & Sons of Greenfield, Automobile Company Since the inception of automobile manufacturing in America, there have been thousands of companies that have come and gone. While some were merely a blip on the historical radar, others have lasted well into the modern age. In all these thousands of companies, African Americans have only been the owners of one, the Patterson-Greenfield Automobile Company, which existed from 1915-1918. Charles B. Brooks, The Street Sweeper While most people will never actually get behind the wheel of a self-propelled street sweeper, without the Brooks designed truck, equipped with trash and debris pushing brushes, city streets would probably be much less clean. The Newark, New Jersey, native’s two other successful 1890s patents included dust-proof collection bags for his street sweeper, as well as a ticket punch that collected the tiny circular paper discards instead of letting them fall to the ground. “We Keep the City Rolling” Page Page 71
