  FRONTLINE OPERATIONAL LEADERSHIP TEAM

This month, the nation celebrates the achievements of African Americans and recognizes our central role in U.S. history. The Department
of Public Works (DPW) also celebrates the leaders who spearhead our operations and lead the charge for the frontline teams. Our
leadership strives to consistently implement tactics and strategies which allow the Department to provide the highest levels of
critical services for our customers.
During this unprecedented time, DPW executive leadership and PMOs continue to make the health and safety of all employees
a priority. As the COVID-19 healthcare crisis evolves, so do safety measures and standard operating procedures. As we continue to
forge ahead, we thank not only the leaders shown but all DPW leadership. Your vision and dedication are appreciated.
As Executive Leaders continue to implement tactics and strategies that will propel DPW to the next level of excellence,
please look for enhancements in the following areas:
• Improvements to Route Utilization to Better Service our Solid Waste Customers
• Leadership training classes offered to DPW supervisors
• Increased Safety Training to Help Reduce Workplace Accidents
• Modernizing our Solid Waste Business Practices
• Developing Leaders In-House

THANK YOU TO OUR STAFF
DPW would like to extend a special thank you to our valued team members who served locally during the historical presidential
inauguration on January 20. Public Works ensured maximum support for our public safety partners through our fortification detail
and coordination as a departmental representative with the Joint Operations Center (JOC). On behalf of Deputy Commissioner
Keith Robinson, we thank those frontline heroines and heroes for embodying the character, service, and integrity of the City of
Atlanta Department of Public Works. Please accept our deepest appreciation for a job well done.

KUDOS FROM THE COMMUNITY
“I wanted to let you know the new [carts] arrived on Tuesday and they are SO NICE! Thank you so much
for your great and fast service. It was so wonderful.
Leah Henderson

“I wanted to acknowledge the two young men [who] picked up my garbage this morning on Gun Club
Road. Lately, our trash was being collected on Thursday and not our regular day of Wednesday. Because
of that my trash wasn’t at the [curb]. The two young men saw my mom pulling into our driveway and
waited on her to get out of her vehicle before walking into the yard and rolling down both trash
containers. This made her day because they could have continued with their route but instead, they
chose to go above and beyond. She didn’t get a name but I wanted to personally thank those drivers
and let them and their supervisor know I appreciate their kind act and that this is what true customer
service is about. Will you please find out who the supervisor is for the guys picking up on Gun Club Road
and let her know what an outstanding act of kindness her guys showed this morning?
Thank you from my mom, Teresia Freeman as well as myself.”
Morticia Wilson

“Thank you to Shantel Turner for her extraordinary work with bulk pickup. I scheduled a bulk pickup, but the pickup didn’t happen. I was
certain that I had done something wrong, so I contacted ATL311. Ms. Turner came out this morning to advise me about my pickup and to
reschedule. Thank you, Ms. Turner!!

In these challenging times, I am so impressed with the [City] for continuing services. Well done, Atlanta!
Grateful Resident,
Judy Hammack

“We can’t type a ‘THANK YOU’ big enough to show our appreciation!
Thank you to everyone involved with the Blair Villa~Poole Creek and Orchard Knob communities cleanup. You all did an awesome job!
Thank you so much!”

BLACK HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS
January 20, 2021 marked another milestone in Black History as Kamala
Harris became the first female vice president and the first African
American / Asian American vice president. Before Vice President Harris
reached this a major milestone, Shirley Chisolm embarked on a journey
that would open doors of possibilities for black women in America. In
1972, Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American candidate for
a major party’s nomination for President of the United States, and the
first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

                              Richard Bowie Spikes, Inventor
Richard Bowie Spikes was a prolific inventor and he was accredited with more than a dozen patents.
While primarily interested in automobile mechanics, he also sought to improve the operation of trolley
cars and other items. Of all his innovations, the best-known are those related to automotive technology.
Spikes’ gear shifting device aimed to keep the gears for various speeds in constant mesh, enhancing the
turn-of-the-century invention of the automatic transmission. His automatic brake safety system was also
significant as it provided a reserve braking action in case of damage to the normal braking means and is
still used in some buses as a fail-safe means of stopping the vehicle.

BLACK HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS
C.R. Patterson & Sons of Greenfield, Automobile Company
Since the inception of automobile manufacturing in America,
there have been thousands of companies that have come and
gone. While some were merely a blip on the historical radar,
others have lasted well into the modern age. In all these
thousands of companies, African Americans have only been
the owners of one, the Patterson-Greenfield Automobile
Company, which existed from 1915-1918.

Charles B. Brooks, The Street Sweeper
While most people will never actually get behind the wheel of a self-propelled street sweeper, without the Brooks
designed truck, equipped with trash and debris pushing brushes, city streets would probably be much less clean.
The Newark, New Jersey, native’s two other successful 1890s patents included dust-proof collection bags for his street
sweeper, as well as a ticket punch that collected the tiny circular paper discards instead of letting them fall to the ground.
