#GlobalAmbition INNOVATION ARENA DIRECTORY 2019
II
Foreword Julie Sinnamon, CEO, Enterprise Ireland Welcome to the 2019 Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena, in conjunction with the National Ploughing Association. The Innovation Arena is a showcase of the very best of enterprise and innovation from across a number of Ireland’s agricultural sectors. 2019 marks our sixth year co-hosting the Innovation Arena at the National Ploughing Championships. The demand to exhibit designs and innovations is high, and this year we are pleased to give over fifty indigenous businesses with global ambition the opportunity to display their products and services to global buyers and partners. Our own indigenous agri-tech sector employs in the region of 4,300 people while some 70% of the employment generated in the agri-food sector are based outside of the capital, meaning they directly support regional development and sustain quality jobs in our regions. With advances in technology, a strong and competitive food industry in Ireland is underpinned by the support of a vibrant agri-tech sector. Enterprise Ireland continues to encourage agri- business clients to focus on innovation to ensure Ireland continues to provide products and services addressing evolving market needs and thereby achieving continued growth. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit New Zealand as part of Field Days, the largest agriculture show in the Southern Hemisphere. At every turn, Ireland’s meaningful impact on forging a sustainable future for agriculture was clear to see. 1
From a global perspective, Ireland continues to make considerable contributions towards discovering new technologies and achieving advances in agriculture. We must however acknowledge the unique challenges that SMEs are facing. As one of our closest trading partners, the potential for a hard Brexit has presented us with an enormous challenge, and the importance of preparing and taking action in advance of the potential disruption is paramount. Looking to new global markets and their untapped potential for growth in business is a key focus of Enterprise Ireland and as part of our Inward Buyer Programme more than 100 buyers from all four corners of the globe will visit the Innovation Arena this week to see first-hand the world-class innovation Ireland offers. I wish all exhibitors and visitors, both domestic and from elsewhere across the world, an enjoyable and productive time at the National Ploughing Championships, 2019. Julie Sinnamon, CEO, Enterprise Ireland 2
About Innovation Arena 2019 Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Arena at the National Ploughing Championships has become the country’s go-to showcase to recognise new start-up businesses and well-known companies introducing new designs to the market that are set for global exports. With the support of the National Ploughing Association, the Innovation Arena exhibits the very best of inventiveness within the agricultural sector in Ireland. There have been big developments in the past twelve months including a 16% increase in the number of agri-companies In Ireland reporting growth in their business. This is positive and demonstrates that even in the face of uncertainty, it’s a sector that is resilient and still has room to prosper. Close to 100 applicants from across the agriculture spectrum sought to be a part of the arena this year. Enterprise Ireland’s evaluation committee selected it’s top 50 entrants and in June they were invited to exhibit as Innovation Arena finalists. Since their selection, these finalists have undertaken the ‘Boot-camp Innovation Challenge’ which was held in preparation for this year’s arena. Each of the fifty exhibitors own business pitch has formed a central component of the panels judging for the Innovation Arena Awards and competition is tough. Within the Innovation Arena itself, the future of the Irish agri-tech industry will be on full display with everything from new machinery to software solutions that streamline processes and aid farm management. Among the objectives of hosting the Innovation Arena is its scope to identify individual entrepreneurs and start-up companies with high potential and support them to boost or accelerate their business’s growth. The total prize fund includes a top prize of €10,000 for the award of most innovative start-up. This year, Enterprise Ireland’s ‘Farm to Fork’ report compiled in collaboration with the Irish Farmers Journal, will be launched during the programme of events. The report highlights Ireland’s prominence among other international countries competing in the agri-tech and agri-engineering industries and details the growth across the sector as a whole. The overseas interest in the Innovation Arena continues to grow each year and this year has been no different. Sencrop from Lille, France and New Zealand’s, Zero Harm Farm are both in the Innovation Arena and showcasing at the National Ploughing Championships for the first time. Enterprise Ireland continues to strive to boost Irish exports and connect more Irish companies with potential investors from the four corners of the globe. Over 100 prospective international buyers will visit the arena this week and each exhibitor will have useful opportunity to network and pitch their business. 3
Changes in 2019 This year sees a bigger international involvement in the Innovation Arena, with over 100 buyers from twelve countries attending events throughout the championships The only ‘Double Decker Innovation Arena’ to host more overseas buyers and presentations on the agri-food, agri-tech and life science industries The official launch of the Enterprise Ireland ‘Farm to Fork’ report in collaboration with the Irish Farmers Journal The introduction of the award for Best Investor Pitch with a cash prize of €1,000 International presentations from New Zealand and the Netherlands on Agri-technology The new ‘Machinery Yard’ showcases the very latest in innovative, contemporary plant engineering and farm equipment design 4

Undergraduate Engineering Projects at GMIT (UEP@GMIT) EMAIL: carine.gachon@gmit.ie LOCATION: Galway WEBSITE: GMIT.ie TELEPHONE: 091 753161 It’s predicted that by the year 2050, the human population will have reached 10 billion. Already, more innovative methods are required in this area and extensive research into farm production is paramount. Statistically in Ireland, 25 farmers lose their lives in farming accidents each year and its understood that almost 30% of these fatalities occur due to incidents involving livestock linked to beef production. Technology can play an integral part of preventing fatal accidents or injury on farms. Projects such as the design of a cost-effective autonomous drone used to remotely monitor or herd livestock and then record the data is just one that could be beneficial to any farmer. And the work to identify and develop more continues at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. WeighRite EMAIL: stephen.odea@truenorthtechnologies.ie LOCATION: Shannon, Co.
