INNOVATION
ARENA
DIRECTORY
2019
II
Foreword
Julie Sinnamon, CEO,
Enterprise Ireland

Welcome to the 2019 Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena,
in conjunction with the National Ploughing Association.

The Innovation Arena is a showcase of the very best of enterprise and innovation
from across a number of Ireland’s agricultural sectors. 2019 marks our sixth year
co-hosting the Innovation Arena at the National Ploughing Championships.

The demand to exhibit designs and innovations is high, and this year we are
pleased to give over fifty indigenous businesses with global ambition the
opportunity to display their products and services to global buyers and partners.

Our own indigenous agri-tech sector employs in the region of 4,300 people while
some 70% of the employment generated in the agri-food sector are based outside
of the capital, meaning they directly support regional development and sustain
quality jobs in our regions.

With advances in technology, a strong and competitive food industry in Ireland
is underpinned by the support of a vibrant agri-tech sector. Enterprise Ireland
continues to encourage agri- business clients to focus on innovation to ensure
Ireland continues to provide products and services addressing evolving market
needs and thereby achieving continued growth.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to visit New Zealand as part of Field Days,
the largest agriculture show in the Southern Hemisphere. At every turn, Ireland’s
meaningful impact on forging a sustainable future for agriculture was clear to see.

                                                                                       1
From a global perspective, Ireland continues to make considerable contributions
towards discovering new technologies and achieving advances in agriculture.

We must however acknowledge the unique challenges that SMEs are facing.
As one of our closest trading partners, the potential for a hard Brexit has
presented us with an enormous challenge, and the importance of preparing
and taking action in advance of the potential disruption is paramount.

Looking to new global markets and their untapped potential for growth in
business is a key focus of Enterprise Ireland and as part of our Inward Buyer
Programme more than 100 buyers from all four corners of the globe will visit
the Innovation Arena this week to see first-hand the world-class innovation
    Ireland offers.

I wish all exhibitors and visitors, both domestic and from elsewhere across
the world, an enjoyable and productive time at the National Ploughing
    Championships, 2019.

    Enterprise Ireland

About Innovation Arena 2019
Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Arena at the National Ploughing Championships
has become the country’s go-to showcase to recognise new start-up businesses
and well-known companies introducing new designs to the market that are set
for global exports.

With the support of the National Ploughing Association, the Innovation Arena
exhibits the very best of inventiveness within the agricultural sector in Ireland.

There have been big developments in the past twelve months including a 16%
increase in the number of agri-companies In Ireland reporting growth in their
business. This is positive and demonstrates that even in the face of uncertainty, it’s a
sector that is resilient and still has room to prosper.

Close to 100 applicants from across the agriculture spectrum sought to be a part
of the arena this year. Enterprise Ireland’s evaluation committee selected it’s top 50
entrants and in June they were invited to exhibit as Innovation Arena finalists. Since
their selection, these finalists have undertaken the ‘Boot-camp Innovation Challenge’
which was held in preparation for this year’s arena. Each of the fifty exhibitors
own business pitch has formed a central component of the panels judging for the
Innovation Arena Awards and competition is tough.

Within the Innovation Arena itself, the future of the Irish agri-tech industry will
be on full display with everything from new machinery to software solutions that
streamline processes and aid farm management.

Among the objectives of hosting the Innovation Arena is its scope to identify
individual entrepreneurs and start-up companies with high potential and support
them to boost or accelerate their business’s growth. The total prize fund includes
a top prize of €10,000 for the award of most innovative start-up.
This year, Enterprise Ireland’s ‘Farm to Fork’ report compiled in collaboration
with the Irish Farmers Journal, will be launched during the programme of events.
The report highlights Ireland’s prominence among other international countries
competing in the agri-tech and agri-engineering industries and details the growth
across the sector as a whole.

The overseas interest in the Innovation Arena continues to grow each year and
this year has been no different. Sencrop from Lille, France and New Zealand’s,
Zero Harm Farm are both in the Innovation Arena and showcasing at the National
Ploughing Championships for the first time.

Enterprise Ireland continues to strive to boost Irish exports and connect more Irish
companies with potential investors from the four corners of the globe. Over 100
prospective international buyers will visit the arena this week and each exhibitor will
have useful opportunity to network and pitch their business.
                                                                                           3

in the Innovation Arena, with over 100 buyers from

The only ‘Double Decker Innovation Arena’ to host
more overseas buyers and presentations on the
agri-food, agri-tech and life science industries

Fork’ report in collaboration with the Irish Farmers
          Journal

At present, Ireland supplies 10% of all global infant milk formula, but the quality
of the formula produced is under threat from chlorine residues and chlorates. A
ban on the use of chlorine on dairy farms in Ireland has been set for the end of
next year and while protein will not be removed, simply removing chlorine from
detergents simply will not work. Ark Farm Innovations has developed a new
detergent that is both Teagasc tested and approved and has been formulated
for hard/soft water areas deposits. ArkAline LCF breaks down protein, fats,
minerals, and creates a PH 12 while also inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Most
uniquely this detergent can be used in hot or cold water. Removing one hot
wash a day reduces your carbon footprint by 1.6 tons per year, using ArkAline
 LCF reduces it by 2.75.

 better start in lactation by addressing the three key challenges during calving;
calcium status, energy status and immune status. This product is unqiue in that
it contains 50% more calcium than any other bolus on the market, aswell as
bio-available magnesium to aid calcium supply, and a combination of rumen
protected vitamin E and selenium. Cow Start Calcium is the only calcium bolus
company to have carried out research trials on grass-based spring calving
herds. This research has shown that Irish cows consistently demonstrate fewer
issues at calving, better energy metabolism and higher milk production.

My name is Philip Dickson and I’m a suckler farmer from Moate, Co
Westmeath. I find it necessary to establish farming practices that are both
time efficient and safety conscious to run a successful business. With that in
mind I created The Third Arm, a tool that assists the operator when attaching
an implement to the three-point linkage on any tractor. It is powered by the
tractor’s 12-volt auxiliary power supply, standard on all tractors from 2000.
There is a major safety and efficiency aspect to The Third Arm which I hope will
 benefit the wider farming community.

It’s predicted that by the year 2050, the human population will have reached 10
billion. To accommodate this demand the current practices in agri-food sector
will need to dramatically evolve to become more ecologically sustainable.
Already, more innovative methods are required in this area and extensive
research into farm production is paramount. Statistically in Ireland, 25 farmers
lose their lives in farming accidents each year and its understood that almost
30% of these fatalities occur due to incidents involving livestock linked to beef
production. Technology can play an integral part of preventing fatal accidents
or injury on farms. Projects such as the design of a cost-effective autonomous
drone used to remotely monitor or herd livestock and then record the data is
just one that could be beneficial to any farmer. And the work to identify and
develop more continues at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

True North Technologies Limited is focussed on delivering geo-tagged decision
support and other solutions within the Agricultural Sector. Among it’s recent
projects is WeighRite which is a product designed to take the heavy-lifting
out of the process of weighing animals or livestock. The product eliminates
weigh-head units in a conventional weighing system by replacing them within
an automated animal and tracking system, connected to the cloud and national
databases through the farmer’s phone. It boasts features such as auto-taring, as
well as the ability to not only store and track individual weights, but also track
individual animals against own herd and national breed averages. Uniquely,
the system measures animal docility automatically. In automatic mode the unit
frees-up the operator by removing the need for multiple manual data entries.

Zero Harm Farm is a simple software application designed to leverage rapid
advances in technology to address the productivity and functionality gap
preventing farm managers and owners from meeting occupational health and
safety obligations. Specifically focused on agriculture, the company has built
a set of specialist features while continually testing the product in-market.
By connecting people in workplaces to geo-spatial information about a
hazard or point of interest relevant to where they will be visiting or working,
they are more likely to focus on the information they need rather than being
inundated with less important safety statement material. Zero Harm Farm
also revolutionises the ability of insurers, with a farmer’s permission, to better
identify, qualify and set liability and asset risk premiums.
