INFORMATION PRESENTATION Department of Education – Acting Director General, DBE “On behalf of the Department of Basic Education may I take this opportunity to thank you for pioneering the Manners4Minors program. The DBE evaluation has confirmed that the program is aligned to the CAPS Life Skills curriculum for Foundation Phase.” HOW DID MANNERS4MINORS START? Manners4Minors is a program developed in South Africa, designed specifically for Foundation Phase children to introduce them to the benefits of universally acceptable good manners and social skills. “Manners are a careful consideration of the feelings of others, irrespective of which fork you use.” – Emily Post Daleen Taylor FOUNDER & DIRECTOR +2783 379 7516 daleen@manners4minors.co.za I have lived and breathed Manners4Minors since developing it in 2007 and am in absolute awe of the results it has achieved. I still pinch myself when I get emails of appreciation from parents & teachers! Truth be told, this started as a labour of love for one little boy who had been very harshly judged for not showing appropriate behaviour … “No manners” they said. My heart ached because I realized that he simply had not been guided. I am so proud to be the catalyst to supporting and assisting children, parents and teachers with positive behaviour management. I am a Wife (to the love of my life for 33 years), Mom to three beautiful children (aged 26, 21 & 12), guardian to a young girl aged 13, a grandmother to my precious little Aaryn (so, yes, I understand the challenges of parenthood), a hard-working entrepreneur and I have been blessed with a yearning in my soul to make a difference (which influences me beyond all else). Thank you for your interest … that in itself is a blessing because it means that there are parents, teachers and schools who are aware of the benefits of raising a respectful, helpful, kind and considerate child. 15/2007 All Rights Reserved Manners4Minors © 1|P a g e
“I am one very happy parent.” Parent, Oct 15 As a Director of The Mountain Cambridge School (www.themcs.co.za) I chose Foundation Phase implementation because this is the most crucial stage of a child’s life and where, I felt, we would have the best chance of introducing these lessons with the best result (in the Window of Opportunity age). The rest, as they say, is history. From a little seed has developed a life- altering program that will affect many children and influence their ability to become effective citizens and future leaders. WHY DID IT BECOME NECESSARY TO DEVELOP A PROGRAM LIKE THIS? Upon reflection of the success with which Manners4Minors was received by children, parents and schools, I spent some time on the reason why a program like this would be necessary. Surely manners and social skills are taught at home? Basically, my research came up with a very simple answer: LIFESTYLE. Our lifestyles have changed and the environments where these skills where handed over quite naturally in the past (family dinners, Sunday family get-togethers, etc.) has, in general, diminished. This is due to a few factors: ➢ High costs of living have forced both parents to work and therefore the quality of time and parental supervision has diminished. ➢ Many single parent families exist where the parental role becomes pressured by time constraints, work pressures, homework deadlines and generally the stress of everyday living. ➢ Technology, televisions and gaming systems in children’s bedrooms have isolated them, with a grave impact on social skills, and have resulted in a decline in the time families spend together. ➢ Cultural diversity is to be respected at every level, but exposure to universally acceptable behaviour and etiquette is invaluable for every child. ➢ Our relationships with our children have changed. Remember the old days when children were seen and not heard? Our generation of parents have become FRIENDS with their children and invite their opinions and views. Our children are very welcome to take part in adult conversation and social occasions. This has resulted in a relationship which is open and honest but not one necessarily based on a healthy level of respect. Parents have become child–pleasers and instead of children wanting to make their parents proud, we have parents who are living up to the expectation of their children. We, somehow, have been conditioned to endeavour to meet our children's expectations of us. HOW DO WE MAKE SUCH AN IMPACT IN A SHORT SPACE OF TIME? Miss Manners gives one weekly half hour lesson at schools. She is fun, interactive and extremely passionate about positively affecting each child she encounters. She, by nature, is optimistic and caring and this endears her to children. The overall objective for each Miss Manners is to demonstrate to the children what reaction they can expect when they use the good manner or 15/2007 All Rights Reserved Manners4Minors © 2|P a g e
life skill being presented- and the reaction they can expect when they don’t! By being well informed and educated, the children leave with a clear understanding of the choice they have, and the consequence, – and, ultimately, if they make the wrong choice …. we have created CONSCIENCE because they know better. This is achieved through the use of our four famous puppet characters and the connection of feeling what is expected: what does BRAGGING feel like? Do we like it? What does BEING PROUD feel like? This is the ultimate success of the program: Attaching FEELING to INFORMATION – the most common words spoken by a Miss Manners “And, how does that make us feel?” Support resources include Home Merit Charts for parents, Songs, Poems, Colouring In Sheets, Activities, Worksheets, Classroom Merit Charts for teachers and Star of the Week stickers for motivating participation. Emails are sent to parents sharing the topic of the week to ensure reinforcement/communication and various resources are shared. The Star Chart is an effective tool for parents to use as a communication system acknowledging behaviour that they are happy with by allocating a star and, of course, by taking off a star for unwanted behaviour. This chart has been adapted for co-curricular schools for use by a teacher in a classroom environment. “Your Star Chart, that works like a bomb, is such a gift and pleasure. I look forward to another year having my son do Manners4Minors, and when my baby is old enough for him to have the pleasure of Manners4Minors in his life too.” – Parent, Oct 15 Ultimately, although we teach practical skills and behaviour management, we establish a healthy core value system encouraging: Willingness to please, Consideration for others, Empathy, Respect, Self- confidence, Self-esteem, Kindness, Conscience …. 15/2007 All Rights Reserved Manners4Minors © 3|P a g e

OPTIONS FOR PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS Manners4Minors plays a major role in helping and assisting with behaviour management education as the attached feedback reports show. The following observations are, obviously, in general and what has been shared with me by educators over the years: • Behaviour Management is impeding on teaching time; • Staff morale is low due to the lack of good manners, social skills and morals being displayed in the classroom by children; • Children are arriving at school without the necessary social skills for interaction with others; • Parents are busy making ends meet and absent parenting is an epidemic; • We have child-headed families; • Teachers are being charged with the responsibility of “raising” a child; • The passion and purpose of teaching is being diminished; • Teachers are battling to TEACH !!!! Manners4Minors has become a trusted partner of affiliated schools in assisting and supporting the social and life skills of Foundation Phase children. There are various options available to participating schools: CO-CURRICULAR Although Manners4Minors started off as an extra-mural option at schools, the trend now is for schools to make time for us during school hours so that the entire class can benefit (and, of course, the parent, teacher and school). When the whole class is exposed to the acceptable behaviour, manner or social skill of the week, it allows the teacher and all participants understand the “rules”. Resources, including Classroom Merit Charts, Short Stories, Classroom Activities, Colouring In Sheets and Worksheets are shared with co-curricular schools for the teacher to use at her/his discretion to reinforce on a daily basis. This option allows for a discounted price per pupil compared to the extra-mural rate because of the number of participants. Please contact the Miss Manners in your area for a presentation and negotiated rate. The school is responsible for the account (but can obviously charge the parent the discounted rate as an addition to the school fees). A Staff Introduction Session can be scheduled to ensure that teachers are familiar with all concepts and are able to effectively use the behaviour management tools within the classroom. DEMO CLASS / PARENT INFORMATION SESSION Should the school want to partner with Manners4Minors, Miss Manners is more than willing to do a Demo Lesson to the children and present our program to parents. The demo class will introduce the children to our four famous puppet friends and explain the reason we are required to have manners and demonstrate acceptable social skills prompting willing participation for future lessons. The Parent Information session is designed to introduce parents to the benefits of participation, both at school and at home. EXTRA MURAL This option is available to parents whose schools do not participate as a Co-Curricular but are happy to host the program. A time and day is negotiated with the school and enrolled students are taught in a space allocated by the school. The parent is responsible for the fee. FREE BULLY WORKSHOP Feel free to book a Free Bully Workshop at your school. This is a wonderful opportunity to see what we do with no obligation. We, as Miss Manners, are constantly doing our bit to curb the bullying epidemic. This workshop covers: ➢ What a bully is, and what bullies do ➢ What the different types of bullies are ➢ What to do if you’re bullied 2016 Stranger Danger Workshop has been launched. WORKSHOP PACKAGE A school may elect to participate by booking a monthly workshop on an ongoing basis. Either the school or pupil is responsible for the per head charge for the workshop. In most instances, the pupil is required to bring a nominal amount once a month to participate in the Workshop. The topics are decided upon by the school from the Index of Lessons. As an introduction to what we do, Miss Manners are available to do one Free Workshop at interested schools. If you would like a demo at your school, please contact a Miss Manners in your area directly. Ook beskikbaar in Afrikaans 15/2007 All Rights Reserved Manners4Minors © 7|P a g e

PRINCIPAL FEEDBACK PRINCIPAL Bedfordview Primary School “Manners4Minors has had a positive impact on the children at our school. On the playground and in the classroom the children are able to identify each other’s positive and negative behaviour by relating it to the puppets. The children are going home and telling their parents what they have learnt. This in turn helps parents at home, as well as the teachers at our school, as the Manners4Minors lessons are impacting on our children. We are pleased to see a variety of materials and teaching aids used in the Manners4Minors lessons, as this keeps the children interested and enthusiastic. They certainly look forward to their visit by Miss Manners. Thank you for a worthwhile programme and for ensuring that a large number of important topics are covered and taught.” PRINCIPAL Montrose Primary “At Montrose Primary School we have been actively involved with the company 'Manners4Minors' through the direct involvement of Mr. Jono Leaf-Wright and Miss Claire Leahy, since January 2009. Claire has been coming once a week, per class to Montrose as a Specialist Teacher and giving our Gr Rs, Gr 1s and Gr 2s, Manners lessons and Social Skills, which are integrated with our Life Skills Programme. The learners are actively involved with Role Play, Puppets, Group Work, Pertinent Props and discussion of Environmental Issues. As the programme supports Values Development, the learners are gaining skills that they will use throughout their lives and become useful active citizens and Lifelong learners, which will lead to a better society in the future e.g. Cleanliness, Compassion, Consideration, Courtesy, Determination, Enthusiasm, Helpfulness, Honesty, Kindness, Love, Loyalty, Modesty, Obedience, Orderliness, Patience, Peacefulness, Reality, Respect, Self-Discipline, Service, Thankfulness, Tolerance, Trust and Unity are to name but a few of the Values instructed. This programme has helped the learners realize that they are directly accountable and responsible for their own actions. The programme also encourages participation in the home and the learners can receive: "Star Incentive Charts, Star Badges, etc.. The programme allows for authentic involvement using the Learners' experience as a Baseline for Development. We highly recommend this Interactive Programme for the positive self-development of every child in the Foundation Phase.” PRINCIPAL Ithemba “Manners4Minors has been very necessary for the children at iThemba Academy in terms of teaching them to interact with their peers in an appealing, appropriate manner. It has definitely introduced the children to the importance of considering those around them in order to receive social acceptance and appreciation from society. The Manners4Minors Reward Chart has worked well in our classes and the children are always excited to get their rewards each week according to how far up the star chart they have climbed. We believe that the Manners4Minors programme for iThemba is an essential part of the school curriculum! Sadly, parents just don't take the time to enforce healthy social behaviour in their children all too often and without an appreciation for universal social norms, it becomes increasingly difficult to function in society regardless of your age or class level.” PRINCIPAL School of Merit Private School “The children always look forward to the classes and participate with great enthusiasm. In this day and age where there is less emphasis placed on good manners and etiquette, Manners4Minors is highly recommended to contribute to a young child's development.” PRINCIPAL The Mountain Cambridge Private School “The Manners4Minors curriculum for the grade 00,000, R & grade 1's forms part of our School's junior Personal Development Program. "Manners4Minors" is included in our school's weekly program. It enriched the lives of our children who participated in the program m and, without doubt, has changed some children's lives forever. As a school we are very fortunate and proud to be part of the M4M program. Above all, Mountain Cambridge School is a happy place; a place where "every child matters" and the M4M program is assisting us as a school in realizing this vision. The M4M program is assisting our students in becoming well-mannered, educated and enthusiastic citizens of the world who will contribute positively to society: To equip our children to be "Real World Ready". 15/2007 All Rights Reserved Manners4Minors © 9|P a g e
PARENT FEEDBACK Alice Henderson “When I first saw the Manners4Minors pamphlet in my child’s bag I thought to myself why must I pay someone to teach my child to say please and thank you that should be part of my job as a parent? But speaking to my mother in law who has a lifetime experience with children and nursery schools, said it was an amazing programme. I then took the time to meet Miss Manners at my child’s nursery school and she said they use puppets for the children to relate to and explain things on their level. And the one thing she said that turned me was that they don’t just teach manners but respect for others and respect for themselves. And it made so much sense to me and as I saw the topics I could see how this respect was key to everything. Manners4Minors is not just for please and thank you but important everyday life lessons. The main changes in my child’s behaviour at restaurants, he is much more pleasant and we can now go to other restaurants other than Spur and the whole family can enjoy the experience so much more. Snacking before mealtime is also easier and my child knows he must eat proper food first, and even tells the rest of the family to make sure we eat right too. He has a better awareness of general and road safety and loves pointing out stop sign and traffic lights. My child was also terrible with whining and moaning, which drove me up the wall. I was able to email Miss Manners and she was so understanding and wrote me pages of helpful hints and exercises and explained in detail why my child was acting the way he was. There has been so much improvement in so much from helping around the house to picking up toys and toilet hygiene! I am so Amazed that this programme has worked such wonders, my child loves it too and there are such cleaver rewards systems involved. The whole programme is fantastic the Manners4Minors team is so organized and well thought out. I also just love the weekly emails explaining what was done with the children that week. I would highly recommend Manners4Minors to any parent! Well done Manners4Minors Team I love your work!” Peter & Thelma Morake “Good day, Firstly we would like to thank you for the wonderful program and the work that you do for not just our son but for all the kids. We think this program is important in shaping the way our kids will grow to conduct themselves, especially in our country with all the influences, mostly negative unfortunately. As for Phemba Morake, we noticed firstly a slow positive change in the way he responded to us at home (greetings, friendships with neighbours, etc) and the big thing for us was his "calming down" which we think will be important to help him with concentration at school. In his own words he would correct us, as parents, each time we slipped in our own manners by referring to what he learned at the manners4minors sessions. We also noticed that he has gained some confidence in his mannerisms without us having to correct him all the time. For this we thank you and we wish to enroll him again as he grows to help him become a fine individual. Best Regards, Peter & Thelma Morake” 15/2007 All Rights Reserved Manners4Minors © 10 | P a g e
