                                School Motto & Ethos
Our aim is the pursuit of excellence for all. We strive for the development of individual
potential and cherish the vitality of communal life. Our school motto sums up what we believe
is the entitlement for all our students and is as relevant today as it has always been:
Sic itur ad astra… (thus the way to the stars)
     • We aim to provide a rich, diverse and challenging education through excellent teaching
         and learning
     • We seek to develop lively and enquiring minds, healthy lifestyles and free spirits
     • We look to generate confidence, purpose, self esteem and outstanding achievement

…a tous venaunts (for all comers)
     • We strive to create a welcoming atmosphere for all to share
     • We encourage generosity, respect and care for others and for the environment
     • We bring together students, parents, staff and community as partners in learning

                                          Lanyards
Please wear your lanyard at all times during the school day and look after your badge
carefully, as it is linked to your sQuid account

                                    Student Absence
If you are unable to come to school your parents/carers can use EduLink to notify us of
your absence or they can call the absence line: 01844 210520

                                         Homework
satchel:one is an online tool to help you keep track of your homework and is a
simple homework calendar that the school uses to ensure homework is set and
communicated to you and your parents/carers. Teachers use it to set home-
work quickly and ensure you always have the information available via a web
browser or mobile/tablet devices. You will be given your login information at
the start of term and can either download an app on your mobile/tablet, or go to:
 https://lordwilliams.satchelone.com/school/home.
If you are struggling with homework, Homework Club is a good place to get help and it runs
every lunchtime in Learning Support. Some subjects have a specific homework club too; you
should ask a teacher when it is. The amount of time that should be spent on work at home is
as follows:
Year 7 Terms 1 & 2 - 30 minutes per day then Terms 3 & 4 approximately 45 minutes per day
Year 8 45-90 minutes per day Year 9 1-2 hours per day Year 10/11 1½ - 2½ hours per day
Please note that these are average times and that they are intentionally broad and flexible.
If you find that the work that has been set does not take up the full amount of time then you
should spend time reviewing work done that week, perhaps by researching a topic covered.

The Internet is a great place to find out information, to meet with friends, play games and download information.
However, you need to be aware of some of the dangers you could face as well.
Top Tips (taken from www.ThinkUKnow.co.uk)
1. Personal Information: Never give out your name, telephone number, address or any other personal
information about yourself or others to any strangers you write to or talk with on the network or the
Internet. Never arrange to meet strangers who approach you whilst you are on the computer; anyone
can pretend to be someone else.
2. Privacy Settings: Know how to set your privacy settings so only your friends can view your profiles.
Remember you must be over 13 to join Facebook and over 16 to join WhatsApp. Even if you join groups or
networks their privacy settings may be open, so think carefully about which ones you join. Keep your
Bluetooth locked when you are not using it.
3. Images: Remember, once a picture is online, you have lost control of it, so you need to think carefully about
   what you post.
4. Software: Ensure your anti-virus software is up to date. Avoid free download sites - you may get more than
you expect e.g. spyware, viruses, unwanted images.

                                     Cyberbullying
This is defined as the use of ICT, particularly mobile phones and the internet to upset
someone else. Cyberbullying is against the school’s Internet Code of Conduct.
Do not get involved. If you are cyberbullied do not retaliate but report the issue. Should you need to speak to
someone outside the school, you can call Childline or visit www.childline.org.uk.

To report inappropriate internet content and sexual abuse to the police, go to
                                 www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/

      Always tell someone if you
ever see, hear or read any- Have fun when you are using the
thing which makes you feel internet but make sure you do it
uncomfortable whilst using safely. Sometimes things online will
the Internet or e-mail. You be different from what you expect.
will not be blamed and your Researching what can happen and
prompt action may protect what you can do about it are all part of
others. This applies at home, learning to be cyber smart.
         in school or elsewhere.

ICT Code of Conduct

The code of conduct applies at all times (in and out of school) and on both sites, whilst using the
school’s network and equipment. It is not intended to be exhaustive, so please note that its guiding
principles are that, at all times, you should use the school’s network and the internet in an
appropriate and responsible manner.

 You should:
• Only access websites that are appropriate for use in school. This also applies outside lesson times.

• Be aware that others can see your actions on the network at anytime, this includes your email internet
  activity.
• Be careful what you say to others and how you say it. Make sure you know who you are speaking to
on-line. Please refer to the E-safety page.
• Treat others as you would expect to be treated. For example, show respect and be polite. Anything else will
be interpreted by the school as cyber-bullying.
• Respect copyright and trademarks. You cannot use words and pictures that you see on an internet site
without giving credit to the person that owns the site. If possible use royalty free web resources. You
must not copy text or pictures from the internet and hand it in to teachers as your own work.
• Be aware that information on an Internet web site may be inaccurate or biased. Try to verify the information
using other sources, if possible, before using it.
• Respect the rooms and the equipment and immediately report any damage or faults involving equipment,
however this might have happened. Any damage caused by you will be charged to you.
• Be aware that the use of removable media is restricted on the school network.

• Always print preview your work and never print unnecessarily, any wasted copies will be charged to you.

• Only use an avatar image when required as a profile picture on educational websites e.g. a Virtual Learning
  Environment.

 You should not:
• Tell anyone your password or try to use someone else’s password.
• Use the school network for personal or recreational use.
• Send, access or display offensive messages or pictures.
• E-bully, use or send bad, threatening or annoying language or any language which might incite hatred against
any ethnic, religious or other minority group.
• Make large downloads or uploads that might take away internet capacity and prevent other users from being
able to carry out their work.
• Try to use any programmes or software that might allow the bypassing of the filtering/security systems in
place to prevent access to such materials. Altering of computer setting is also prohibited.
• Take food or drink into the computer areas.

Please note: you should always log out when your session has finished.
All users’ areas on the school network are monitored closely and staff will review your files and
communications to maintain system integrity. Failure to follow this code will result in loss of access and
further disciplinary action, up to and including exclusion. If application, external agencies may be
involved since certain activates may constitute a criminal offence (General Date Protection Regulation
and the Computer Misuse Act of 1990). 8

Things you should know if you are worried about something or
someone or if someone is hurting you or others

 • We believe in keeping you safe. Everyone at Lord Williams’s School wants you to
feel safe and will help and listen to you.

 • You all have a right to be safe, you do not have to keep a secret about being hurt or
bullied and you do not have to deal with this on your own.

 • Tell someone you can trust about what is happening. Your friends, parents, tutors,
teachers, school counsellors, Pastoral Support Officers, teaching assistants or family
may be able to help you.

 • All staff are helpful but tutors, student reception staff and your Pastoral Support
Officers (PSOs) are especially well placed to help and guide you.

 • TalkTime (Tuesday lunchtimes with Lead School Counsellor, Amela Munro and the
School Health Nurse, Angie Hatt) provides medical, relationship, health and sexual
