To check the reading level of a book, go to www.arbookfind.co.uk and look for the BL level. E– Learning & E-Safety These sites can be accessed at home: Think You Know - https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ E-safety information provided by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Task Group (CEOP) Teach-ICT.com - http://www.teach-ict.com/ Free resources linked to the National Curriculum at all levels, topical news, revision etc. The Internet is a great place to find out information, to meet with friends, play games and download information. However, you need to be aware of some of the dangers you could face as well. Top Tips (taken from www.ThinkUKnow.co.uk) 1. Personal Information: Never give out your name, telephone number, address or any other personal information about yourself or others to any strangers you write to or talk with on the network or the Internet. Never arrange to meet strangers who approach you whilst you are on the computer; anyone can pretend to be someone else. 2. Privacy Settings: Know how to set your privacy settings so only your friends can view your profiles. Remember you must be over 13 to join Facebook and over 16 to join WhatsApp. Even if you join groups or networks their privacy settings may be open, so think carefully about which ones you join. Keep your Bluetooth locked when you are not using it. 3. Images: Remember, once a picture is online, you have lost control of it, so you need to think carefully about what you post. 4. Software: Ensure your anti-virus software is up to date. Avoid free download sites - you may get more than you expect e.g. spyware, viruses, unwanted images. Cyberbullying This is defined as the use of ICT, particularly mobile phones and the internet to upset someone else. Cyberbullying is against the school’s Internet Code of Conduct. Do not get involved. If you are cyberbullied do not retaliate but report the issue. Should you need to speak to someone outside the school, you can call Childline or visit www.childline.org.uk. To report inappropriate internet content and sexual abuse to the police, go to www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ Always tell someone if you ever see, hear or read any- Have fun when you are using the thing which makes you feel internet but make sure you do it uncomfortable whilst using safely. ICT Code of Conduct The code of conduct applies at all times (in and out of school) and on both sites, whilst using the school’s network and equipment. It is not intended to be exhaustive, so please note that its guiding principles are that, at all times, you should use the school’s network and the internet in an appropriate and responsible manner. You should: • Only access websites that are appropriate for use in school. This also applies outside lesson times. • Be aware that others can see your actions on the network at anytime, this includes your email internet activity. • Be careful what you say to others and how you say it. Make sure you know who you are speaking to on-line. Please refer to the E-safety page. • Treat others as you would expect to be treated. For example, show respect and be polite. Anything else will be interpreted by the school as cyber-bullying. • Respect copyright and trademarks. You cannot use words and pictures that you see on an internet site without giving credit to the person that owns the site. If possible use royalty free web resources. You must not copy text or pictures from the internet and hand it in to teachers as your own work. • Be aware that information on an Internet web site may be inaccurate or biased. Try to verify the information using other sources, if possible, before using it. • Respect the rooms and the equipment and immediately report any damage or faults involving equipment, however this might have happened. Any damage caused by you will be charged to you. • Be aware that the use of removable media is restricted on the school network. • Always print preview your work and never print unnecessarily, any wasted copies will be charged to you. • Only use an avatar image when required as a profile picture on educational websites e.g. a Virtual Learning Environment. You should not: • Tell anyone your password or try to use someone else’s password. • Use the school network for personal or recreational use. • Send, access or display offensive messages or pictures. • E-bully, use or send bad, threatening or annoying language or any language which might incite hatred against any ethnic, religious or other minority group. • Make large downloads or uploads that might take away internet capacity and prevent other users from being able to carry out their work. • Try to use any programmes or software that might allow the bypassing of the filtering/security systems in place to prevent access to such materials. Altering of computer setting is also prohibited. • Take food or drink into the computer areas. Please note: you should always log out when your session has finished. All users’ areas on the school network are monitored closely and staff will review your files and communications to maintain system integrity. Failure to follow this code will result in loss of access and further disciplinary action, up to and including exclusion. If application, external agencies may be involved since certain activates may constitute a criminal offence (General Date Protection Regulation and the Computer Misuse Act of 1990). 8
