It is anticipated that the refurbished Middle School Learning Centre will be completed by the end of Term 1. The new building at the back of the school, which will incorporate another Middle School learning space plus dance studio, HPE, Art and Photography learning spaces, will be ready by end of Term 3. The foundations have been laid and the steel frame is up. The toilets adjacent to the Senior Learning Centre are also being refurbished and we hope will be finalised mid-Term 1. Other works completed during the Christmas break include re-roofing of the original two-story building and the installation of a two very large water tanks as part of a fire system upgrade. We also have a school funded works program happening which involves the building of an outdoor learning space for the Senior School. The courtyard outside of the Senior Learning Centre will have a closed in roof, built in seating and outdoor heating. We hope that this will be completed by the middle of this term. COVID Update While there is currently no community transmission of COVID-19 in South Australia, it is important we remain prepared to respond to the fast-changing nature of the pandemic. The Department for Education continues to plan and operate in line with advice from SA Health and directions set by SAPOL to support the safety and wellbeing of staff, students and the broader community. To support contact-tracing purposes, there are now QR codes placed at the Front Office and Student Wellbeing Centre. We ask all parents/caregivers and visitors to the school to scan or register upon entry. This term we have resumed parent/caregiver meetings on site with the Year 8 Acquaintance Night in Week 2 and the Year 9-12 Parent/Caregiver Information Evening in Week 3. Thank you to the many parents/caregivers for your attendance and for adhering to the COVID protocols. Also, please keep your child at home if they are feeling unwell or present with any COVID related symptoms, and organise testing. 2 Inspiring Achievement and Respect
Uniform Thank you to families for supporting the Blackwood High School Uniform Policy. Students have begun the year looking very smart in their uniform. However, with some recent cooler mornings, some students are wearing non uniform long sleeved tops under their school polo top. I ask for parental support to ensure students are wearing correct uniform items. The Uniform Shop does supply a range of long sleeve options, including a long sleeve polo, so students have a choice and can keep warm. Also, I have noticed that some students have experienced a growth spurt since the end of last year. I ask that the length of skirts and dresses are checked and, if needed, adjusted to be at least thigh length to be presentable for school. If families have questions or concerns about the uniform requirements or require support, please contact the school. Blackwood High School Governing Council Annual General Meeting Finally, I would like to remind families of the Blackwood High School Governing Council Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday 2 March at 7.00pm. Middle School update Year 8 Year 8 has begun with a bang with our staggered start allowing students to set up for the term, meet our Year 12 students and get around the school with a Blackwood High School Amazing Race Challenge, run by our Peer Support Leaders! Sadly last week, Year 8 Sports Day was ‘rained out’ after the best attempts from the Physical Education staff to begin the afternoon with some athletic event practice. Last Friday’s Pool Day has also been rescheduled to later in the term with the hopes of a much sunnier day! Year 8 student’s Malvie Campbell and Nathan Humphries commented on their first day of Year 8. It was interesting because there wasn’t everyone at school compared to how many people there actually are. The teachers were lovely and it was easier to learn our way around the school before everyone else arrived the next day. It didn’t feel so rushed to get out of places which helped us feel less nervous and helped us ease into our routines. We liked the Amazing Race... Once I learnt where everything was. I liked getting a snack from the canteen with the Year 12 students. I thought it was good we all get a colour timetable for our lockers to help us know where to go and the speed dating sessions had something for everyone. Year 9 Last Friday, two groups of Year 9 students were fortunate enough to walk through the Capital Works building and the refurbishment of the Middle School Learning Centre (MSLC). Students can’t wait to be back in the MSLC and are looking forward to the flexibility these spaces will bring. Students commented on the opportunity for ‘break out’ spaces, the new dance studio, new change rooms and Ms Richards new office. Introduction of new Leaders Stew Nancarrow Hello. My name is Stew Nancarrow and I am one of the new Year 7-9 Learning Community Leaders at Blackwood High School. I have made the move from Eden Hills Primary School this year, where I was leading the Middle Years team for the last three years. Prior to this, I worked with disadvantaged students and high-risk students in a variety of capacities. My main area of focus is the Middle Years, with a particular focus on innovative teaching and learning. I am overwhelmed by how supportive and embracing the community have been at Blackwood High School. I want to thank all who have welcomed me and I look forward to meeting many more over my next five years at the school. In my role, I provide support for students, teachers and families of 8G, 8H, 9F, 9G and 9H. However, I invite anyone with a query, to send me an email and I would love to be of some assistance! Thyrza Veitch Hi – I am Thyrza Veitch and I am one of the three Year 8 and Year 9 Learning Community Leaders, (next year - Year 7/8/9 as we welcome the Year 7 students to High School). Another part of my role is to lead the coordination of the Year 8 and 9 Pastoral Care Group sessions and activities over the year. Although I am Secondary School trained, I have spent the last 17 years teaching Year 6 and 7 students the IB Middle Years Programme; been an IBMYP Coordinator and occasionally helped out in leadership roles at Coromandel Valley Primary School, which I absolutely loved. Married with 2 boys, I enjoy swimming, socialising with friends and studying, when I get the time! This year, alongside my leadership role, I am teaching Year 8 and 9 English and Humanities as well as Food Technology and I look forward to an exciting five years ahead at Blackwood High School. Charlotte Twizell Previously having worked at the Australian Science and Mathematics School, this is my second year at Blackwood High School and I am looking forward to building our learning communities and positive school culture within the Middle School. I have volunteered overseas and been a team manager for the School Sport swim team for the last six years. This year I am teaching Year 8 English and Humanities, Year 9 Humanities and Year 12 Health along with Learning Community Leader for Care Groups 8D, 8E, 8F, 9C, 9D, 9E. I am looking forward to working with our student leaders and building skills and opportunities in this space. 5
Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) The Department for Education Child Protection in schools, early childhood education and care services policy states that ‘all children and young people in the Department’s Preschools and Schools will access the approved Child Protection Curriculum’. The KS:CPC is an evidence based, best practice curriculum developed collaboratively with child protection experts, teachers, educational leaders and other professionals. The curriculum is designed to support children and young people to recognise abuse, tell a trusted adult, understand what is appropriate and inappropriate touching and ways of keeping themselves safe. Since its first publication in 2008, the KS:CPC materials have been integrated into the curriculum, teaching and learning programs at Blackwood High School, as expected of all Department schools. We continue to monitor and review these materials and update our programs as necessary. Themes The curriculum is based on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities. • Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe • Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust. Focus Areas The two themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the learners. 1. The right to be safe 2. Relationships 3. Recognising and reporting abuse 4. Protective strategies. For Years 8 and 9, the following topics are covered: Recognising and reporting Protective The right to be safe Relationships abuse strategies • warning signs • rights and responsibilities • privacy and the body • strategies for • risk taking and • identity and relationships • recognising abuse keeping safe emergencies • power in relationships • cyber safety • network review • psychological pressure • trust and network • domestic and family and community and manipulation violence support For Years 10–12, the following topics are covered: Recognising and reporting Protective The right to be safe Relationships abuse strategies • risk taking and • rights and responsibilities • privacy and the body • strategies for emergencies • identity and relationships • recognising abuse keeping safe • psychological pressure • power in relationships • cyber safety • network review and manipulation • trust and network • domestic and family and community violence support More information can be found on the KS:CPC website: http://tiny.cc/KSCPC-ParentCarerInfo. Please contact Jason Loke (jason.loke@bhs.sa.edu.au) if you have any questions about the curriculum. Jason Loke, Deputy Principal 6 Inspiring Achievement and Respect
Senior School update It has been a great start for the Senior School students and they have seemed to settle in very smoothly. It was a bit of a different beginning to the year with Year 12 students starting a day before the Year 10 and 11 students. This gave the Year 12 students a better understanding of some of the new processes associated with completing their SACE and what they need to do to be prepared for life beyond school. It also gave them an opportunity to get to know our new Year 8 students, who also started on that day. During recess, our Year 12 students helped the Year 8 students get orientated with the canteen as they collected their free snack. The Senior School Leadership Team are available to assist all Year 10 - 12 students with any questions or support they may need. The team enlisted to support your children with their learning and development are as follows: Mr Ashley Robinson – Assistant Principal Senior School Ms Kate Young – Year 10 - 12 Leader and SACE Coordination Mr Matthew Loan – Year 10 - 12 Leader and PLP Mr Andrew Cavallaro – VET Coordination and Student Pathways Ms Argie Buesnel – Student Wellbeing Leader These staff will be working with all students across the three year levels so please feel free to contact any one of us and we would be happy to be of assistance. Year 11 2020 Awards Assembly Due to South Australia’s hard lockdown in November last year we were unable to have our Year 11 Awards Assembly. This was a pity as we feel it is extremely important to acknowledge the success of our students and celebrate the fruits of their labour. The staggered start at the beginning of this year gave us the opportunity to have this assembly on the first day. Congratulations to the following award winners: 2019 Dux Laura Jade Winn Medal James Hackett Rotary Award Mikayla Heddle Blackwood Lions Club Bursary Carley Clark Blackwood Lions Club Bursary Chloe Cameron Vocational Education Award Gemma Vasey School Based Apprentice Award Mitchell Chandler Sport Service Award Jensen Brown Sport Service Award Mikayla Heddle 7
Class of 2020 and Goals for our Senior School in 2021 We had some outstanding results for our Year 12 cohort of 2020. This was made all the more impressive given the disruption that our students had to deal with across the year. Nearly all of the students that were eligible to complete SACE managed to do so successfully. We also had 10 students receive an ATAR of 90 or above with our highest being 96.3. Five students received Merits and attended a reception at Government House last week. These are some amazing results and it is a credit to all of the hard work put in by the students and staff. Our focus in 2021 is to do even better this year. Whilst we do well to get students ‘over the line’ through our management and support, we are putting a greater emphasis on students striving to achieve their personal best. Through our Pastoral Care Programs, PLP and individual support we will be working with students so they can further develop their capacity to be independent learners and so they are not only equipped with the necessary tools to be prepared for life after school but, through their academic achievement, they have a wider variety of options to choose from. Ashley Robinson, Assistant Principal Senior School International Student News Blackwood High School has developed a very strong International Student Program over the past fifteen years, including hosting Graduate Program students (here to complete their SACE and pursue tertiary studies in Australia), Study Abroad Program students (here for twelve months or less), and Study Tour groups from Japan. In Term 1 last year, we welcomed back 46 students who had returned home to visit family and friends over the summer break and 28 new students. But then the situation we all found ourselves in changed dramatically. When the Government closed our borders to overseas visitors, some international students decided to return home early to be with their families. We are very proud of the students who remained with us and applied themselves to their studies in the very challenging situation they found themselves in. In particular, we would like to acknowledge the achievements of our cohort of Year 12 students. Of the group of 13 students, one student has decided to return home to China (and study online with a University in London) with the others all choosing to stay in Adelaide to continue their studies. Their courses of study include; Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Animals Science, Media and Communication, Chemical Engineering, Marketing, Architectural Design, Laboratory Medicine, Nursing and Nutrition. It was exciting to see that a number of our graduates have won scholarships, based on their high ATAR scores, for the duration of their courses. As we start the new school year, it is clear that many of the disruptions and changes we experienced last year remain with us. We sincerely hope our current international students will be able to return home to be reunited with family and friends very soon. In the meantime, we will continue to support them to achieve their personal best and to make happy memories of their time studying with us. Sports update It has been another busy start to the year with sport at Blackwood High School. The Southern Zone Sport Competition (afterschool sport) is set to begin in Week 4 with the school having two Year 8/9 Boys Basketball teams and two Year 8/9 girls Volleyball teams. The Knock Out competitions for Term 1 began in Week 3. Blackwood entered teams in the Year 8/9 Boys Cricket, Open Boys Cricket and Open Girls Cricket. The Open Boys’ team played Cornerstone College in Round one of their competition. Blackwood lost the toss and were sent in to field. Blackwood bowled well early with wickets to Nathan Houston and Toby Russell. Blackwood continued to bowl well through the middle overs and bowled Cornerstone out for 70 in the 31st over. Chasing 71 to win, the message was to play with composure. Nathan Houston top scored with 35 and Ben Wender made 25, not out. Blackwood are now through to Round two to play either Birdwood High School or Banskia Park International High School. The Open Girls team is due to play Pulteney Grammar and Immanuel College on Friday 12 February and the Year 8/9 Boys play Brighton Secondary School and Seaview High School on Thursday 18 February. The Year 8 Sports Day was held on Thursday 4 February. The overcast skies didn’t deter the athletes from doing their best. Each Care Group completed 3 events before rain set in, bringing the Year 8 Sports Day to an early close. The 2021 Whole School Athletics Carnival is due to be held on Friday 26 February (Week 5) If there are any enquiries about the above carnivals or anything sport related, please contact Justin Callahan, Sports Officer on 8278 938. Justin Callahan, Sports Officer Learners Permit Letters Please note there is a 24 hour turnaround when requesting the letter required for proof of identity when sitting for your Learner’s Permit.
