Sutherland Public School November 2020 NAUTICAL N e w s D A N KEY S ER, S U P ERI N TEN D EN T SPS Foundation Annual Fund Drive A reminder that our Sutherland Public School’s Foundation annual drive is currently underway. The goal of the challenge is to raise $10,000 dollars by December 31, 2020. Currently the fund drive is at $1,350. Donors may give an undesignated gift or select a specific project to fund. Your donation can be sent to either the school or the Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation, P.O. Box 1321, North Platte, Nebraska 69103. Also, donations can be made online at http://www.spssailors.org/Foundation/donations.html The mission of the SPS Foundation is to “Enrich, Expand, Equip” (Enrich our school, Expand student opportunities, and Equip our teachers). Please thoughtfully consider having an integral part of providing educational opportunities for our students! Show your Sailor pride as we take on the $10,000 foundation challenge! Weather & School Closings With winter approaching, slick roads and sidewalks will be a possibility. During winter conditions we all need to allow more time for arrival to school and departure and use caution when driving and walking on roads and sidewalks. Decisions concerning late starts and school closings are difficult as there’s no perfect way of making those judgments when dealing with the weather changes in Nebraska. Late starts and school closings will however be determined after considering information from the weather bureau, news media, contacts with area farmers, surrounding schools, and personal observations on weather reports and road conditions. The decision may not be agreeable with everyone, so please remember, parents always have the final decision whether to send their children to school or when to pick them up early. Whenever school is being dismissed early, starting late or being cancelled due to weather, it will be announced through the following mediums: School App, TV, radio, Facebook, and Twitter. If you have questions registering for any of the school’s electronic communication systems, please call the school (386-4426) and ask for Mr. Maxcy. School Audit All Nebraska public school districts are required by Nebraska State Statute §79-1089 to undergo an audit of the district's financial records. The school district’s fiscal year runs from September 1st to August 31st. Almquist, Maltzahn, Galloway, & Luth is the auditing firm that conducts our audit. The audit is a very extensive review of all the district’s funds and financial statements. Our auditing firm gave a presentation of the 2019-20 Audit to the school board’s finance committee. The district received a very positive and clean audit report. Alisha Morgan, the district’s bookkeeper, received high praise from the auditing firm for her efficiency and accuracy with daily entries and financial records. A copy of the 2019-20 Audit is available at the school office for your review. Continued on next page…….
Sutherland Public School November 2020 DAN KEYSER, SUPERINTENDENT…………………CONTINUED Retirement I am retiring after 41-years in the education profession. At the October board meeting, I submitted my resignation effective at the end of my 2020-21 contract year (June 30th). Throughout my 11-year tenure at Sutherland, the Board of Education members have been very professional, understood their role, supported administrative decisions and had a long-term vision with budgeting and policy development. The classified and certificated staff have been entrusted colleagues. I have enjoyed seeing the growth of our student body academically and within their extra-curricular activities. Also, I have relished numerous relationships with district patrons. Thank you for your trust and support in allowing me to be a part of this great school! Sutherland Anchor Club (PTO) November Meeting at the CO-OP 5:30 pm 11-10-2020 ALL ELEMENTARY PARENTS are encouraged to attend.
Sutherland Public School November 2020 D U S TI N M I TC H EL L , H I G H S C H O O L P RI N C I P A L I would like to thank parents, students, and the community for being flexible with the many changes of our school year. Fall activities are at the end of the season and we will start our Winter activities. Students continue to be involved in a multitude of activities including Football, Cross Country, Volleyball, FFA, Drama, Music, and other groups. All NSAA events will require masks to be worn unless you are sitting by yourself and you are socially distant. Please follow their expectations! Continue to utilize our school calendar located on the school website at www.spssailors.org, and www.southplattevalleyassociation.org , social media, and by accessing the Sutherland app to stay aware of local and NSAA events. From now until the end of the school year our juniors will be utilizing our Seminar time to work on ACT Online Prep and John Baylor ACT Test Prep. We will also utilize seminar time to allow for time in FFA, Show Choir, getting help from teachers, and working on math skills for all of our high school students on Mondays. With the many activities that are scheduled throughout the year and each week it will be important for parents and students to stay on track using PowerSchool and communicating with teachers if you have any concerns. If students leave school for an activity it is their responsibility to gather work from the classes that they are missing. They are also responsible for completing that work on time. During the next few months the weather will change and student illness may increase. If your child is ill, please call our office and let us know. Wearing masks at school has allowed us to stay in school and keep activities going. We do have extra masks available for students, however, students should be keeping that mask and they will need to wash it at home. They are not “throw away” masks. It is still important for students to self-monitor for symptoms both at home and at school. If they have one symptom they will need to stay home for 24 hours symptom free. If they have two symptoms we ask that they contact West Central Health and a healthcare provider for instructions. Thank you for your efforts at home to keep all kids safe. We want to continue with in person learning and keep activities going. We are all Sailors and we must work together to make that happen. If we happen to have a school cancellation, late start, or early out due to weather we will post it on our APP, Facebook, Twitter, and local media outlets. If we do have school and the parent feels like it is in their student’s best interest to stay home because their road is not safe, please do so. It will be considered a parent request. Students have 8 days per semester (not including medical appointments). Lastly, we are happy to announce that we have applied for and received the Perkins Revision Grant. We will be receiving $41,000 towards three different areas: Our Industrial Arts classes will be getting a new Plasma Cutter (with AutoCAD licenses) and a Virtual Reality Welding Simulator. And our business classes will be getting 5 new PC laptops and Microsoft Office Certification training to go with them! We are excited to improve our resources in both our shop and business classes. Sutherland Public School November 2020 J O S IE F LO Y D , ELEMENTA RY P RINC IP A L I am incredibly proud of our students and staff for all their efforts to make our 1st quarter a success. With masks being required, it hasn’t been easy, but our students are rockin’ that expectation and we are in school where we all belong. Thank you for your support as parents who have assisted in implementing all the changes with patience and grace. We are grateful for your assistance and support. As we progress through the school year, we will continue to take every effort to keep our students safe and provide a quality education for all. October is a month filled with a multitude of life learning opportunities for our students that will assist them in being the best they can be: Fire Safety, Internet Safety & Digital Citizenship, Character Education/Bully Prevention, and Red Ribbon Week just to name a few. Our students recently had the opportunity to participate in a virtual field trip, NED’s Mindset Mission. The students learned to Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best! Ask your child about NED and the Power of YET! Through the assembly students listened to some powerful messages and gained a few tools to assist them in doing their best as a student at Sutherland Elementary. Please take time to visit with your child about each of these topics and see what “takeaways” they can share with you! PRINCIPAL READ ALOUDS FOR SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER During the months of September & October students have had the opportunity to hear books that focus on LOVE, THAT WE MATTER, KINDNESS, & BEING UNIQUE. The beginning of the year was even more special this year after being away from one another for the extended period of time. I adjusted a few words from our September book, You’re Here for a Reason by Nancy Tillman that was shared with our students. A school year for us to remember…..You’re Here For A Reason You're here for a reason. If you think you're not I would just say that perhaps you forgot . . . a piece of our school that is precious and dear was greatly missing you, when you weren't here. We missed your smile, your laugh and your heart this place we call school has been minus a part. Thank goodness you're here! Thank goodness times two! We just can't imagine our Sutherland School without you. Please ask your children about the book mentioned above as well as You’re All Wonders by R.J. Palacio which is currently being read in recognition of Bully Prevention Month. Encourage your child to share the messages they have taken away from these special read alouds. MATH OLYMPIAD We currently have 15 MATHLETES in 4th-6th grades who have earned and accepted the challenge to participate in Math Olympiad this year. These 15 students performed in the 75th-99th percentile this fall on the NWEA MAP test to qualify for the program. Math Olympiad provides five online competitions throughout the year to challenge these students’ mathematical reasoning. Math Olympiad is facilitated by Mrs. Samuelson. We wish our MATHLETES the best during their competitions this year! Continued on the Next Page……………
Sutherland Public School November 2020 J O S IE F LO Y D , ELEMENTA RY P RINC IP A L………….C O NTINUED Math Olympiad Students: 4th Grade: Keeley Dempcy, Jaxson Rotert, Ayden Edwards 5th Grade: Vivienne Johnsen, Bryden Redden, Teagan Fitzpatrick, Keigan Kershner, Dillon Floyd, Morgan Krajewski, Macradee Lantis, Easton Dancer 6th Grade: Marshall Patrick, Max Buscher, Maleah Vasquez, Kale Martinez Digital Citizenship & Internet Safety Parents have a huge responsibility in keeping their children safe with technology. If you are searching for tools to assist with internet safety and digital citizenship at home, Common Sense Media is a great resource. The link can be found at http://www.commonsensemedia.org/. The site includes reviews for books, movies, video games, apps, television shows and all around helpful internet safety advice. You can create an account that “feeds” you weekly information that is pertinent to the age of your children. Internet Safety is also a high area of concern and priority as devices become more available at school and at home to our children. It is important that you know what your child is doing when on-line, where they are “traveling” in cyberspace and who they are “traveling” with! Nebraska Weather As the weather begins to change, remember to send appropriate clothing for your child. Recess will almost always be outside, so please send a warm coat, gloves, hat, etc. It is also a good idea to write your child’s name inside their clothing items. It makes it much easier to find the owner if the item is misplaced. Speaking of misplaced items, all clothing items that have accumulated in the “lost & found” during the 1 quarter have been delivered to the st Salvation Army in North Platte. Communication & School Updates Please make sure you are signed up for our school app which we use to communicate to parents and the community throughout the year. Go to the app store and search “Sutherland Public School” to find the app. There is now a new “Notifications” icon within the app that you can use to review any notifications that are sent out from the school. If you need assistance please contact Mrs. Floyd or Mr. Maxcy at school. THE SAILOR WAY While we have no control over the climate outdoors, we do have incredible power over the climate at Sutherland Elementary. During the 1st quarter, all adults in the building have been working hard to teach common expectations and recognize students for doing things THE SAILOR WAY (Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible & Always Do Your Best). Students have been earning SAILOR PRIDE coins for both individual and group positive behaviors. All classes have earned the goal of 25 PRIDE coins multiple times and have been able to spin the Wheel of Incentives to reveal a small reward. With the conclusion of nine weeks of school, I would like to commend students, staff, parents, and community for working together to create a positive climate and recognizing students for their positive choices. Parent/Teacher Conferences I would like to compliment all parents for coming to Parent Teacher Conferences in October. The elementary had 100% turnout which is amazing. With everyone’s support, the year is off to a great start! Please remember to continue communicating with your child’s teacher throughout the rest of the school year. P/T Conferences is only one opportunity for you to meet face to face with your child’s teacher. The more you communicate with your child’s teacher, the more informed you are about your child’s education. Thank you for all you do! Continued on the next page………………..
Sutherland Public School November 2020 J O S IE F LO Y D , ELEMENTA RY P RINC IP A L………….C O NTINUED Warming Hearts Warm coats for all…This fall we were able to provide many new coats to elementary students. I would like to extend a “HUGE” thank you to the wonderful individuals in our community who have donated coats and money this year toward the cause. We are truly blessed to live in such a giving community. You brought a smile to the children and truly WARMED THEIR HEARTS, when the coats were distributed! EHA “ELEVATE” - A “Quinquennial” Event Benefits Staff & Students For the fifth year, Sutherland Public School was selected to be part of a wellness program for staff members. At the end of October, 38 staff members who completed the year-long wellness challenge (EHA ELEVATE) will receive a $150.00 gift card for their accomplishments. This was a total of $5,700 distributed in gift cards from EHA. 43 staff members also completed an online Personal Health Assessment and received $25.00 each or $1,075 as a team for completing this requirement. An additional $5,570.00 was also given to the group in the form of a grant. Each staff member will receive an additional monetary gift to purchase a fitness tracker, new tennis shoes, a gym membership or something around the topic of wellness! Additional grant dollars will also be utilized to purchase something for our school. This has been a great adventure and wonderful opportunity to create a healthy culture at Sutherland Public School! We are looking forward to "ELEVATEing" again in 2020-2021! Way to go Sutherland Sailors! Sincerely, Mrs. Floyd! C A TH Y B RU N Z , K- 1 2 S C H O O L C O U N S EL O R October was a busy and successful month. So many activities for K-12 such as Red Ribbon Week, seniors applying to college, financial aid night, the PSAT test, and several college representatives zooming in to visit! November is gearing up with a lot of activities as well. November 20th is the deadline to sign up for the December 12th ACT, and is the last chance for seniors for most college admissions and scholarships. UNK and UNL will also accept the February ACT for scholarship reasons. To sign up, just go to www.actstudent.org! Several of our seniors have taken advantage of early admissions to schools and are well on their way having their applications completed. I encourage all of our seniors to have applied to their top 3 to 4 post-secondary schools prior to Christmas, to ensure that they are eligible for scholarships from the colleges. If senior parents/students have not completed the FASFA process yet, I encourage you to do so. If you would like help with that, please contact EducationQuest at 308.234.6310 to set up an appointment. This can be done via zoom which is a great opportunity. We will be carrying on the tradition of the annual Veterans Day Program, but virtual this time. This will go live on November 11th at 11am via the school’s Facebook page and the Sutherland Public School App. The National Honor Society would like to invite Veterans and their families to send a picture of their veteran to cathy.brunz@spssailors.org Please include their name, branch, and years of service in the email. They would also like to provide a breakfast burrito to veterans on November 11th. Please call the school at 308-386-4321 or email cathy.brunz@spssailors.org to place your order. Thank you to all that have served and whom are serving our Country! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Sutherland Public School November 2020 NOTE FROM THE NURSE: We want to be clear on what happens if your child becomes sick or ill. Current guidance from West Central Health District states that if a student has one symptom of: fever, chills, rigors, muscle aches, headaches, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, students will need to go home and stay home until they are 24 hours symptom free. If a student has two or more of the above symptoms they will need to complete the West Central Health Survey, contact their health provider, and get medical clearance or clearance from West Central Health to return to school. In addition, if students have a new cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or a loss of taste/smell, they will also have to go through their health provider or West Central Health District to return to school. We want students in school and completing in-person learning and this helps us to insure we can maintain this goal! IMPORTANT UPDATE ON FREE MEALS: THE USDA HAS EXTENDED THE WAIVER TO ALLOW SCHOOLS TO OFFER FREE BREAKFAST AND LUNCHES TO ALL ENROLLED STUDENTS THROUGH THE END OF THE 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR. (Students receive one milk with their meal and additional milks still have to be paid for.)
Sutherland Public School November 2020 TeamMate scholarship opportunities are available! Please contact Mrs. Brunz or myself for more information! TeamMates Mentoring Program began in 1991 with the vision of University of Nebraska Head Football Coach Tom Osborne and his wife Nancy. Coach Osborne felt that the athletes in his program could make an impact on the middle school students, and twenty-two football players began meeting with middle school students in the Lincoln Public Schools. Of the 22 original mentees, 21 went on to graduate from high school while one left school early to pursue a successful Motocross career. Eighteen of the original mentees also obtained some form of post-secondary education. The program has changed quite a bit since then. We now serve thousands of boys and girls across the Midwest, and our mentors come from all walks of life. One thing, however, remains the same— our mentors just have to be there. It’s that simple. Turkey Pilgrim Cookies (Taste Of Home) • 84 pieces candy corn • 24 Oreo Double Stuff cookies • 3/4 cup canned chocolate frosting • 12 miniature peanut butter cups • 12 Hershey Kisses of your choice • 3/4 cup canned vanilla frosting • Orange food coloring • 6 miniature marshmallows, halved • 6 mini Oreo cookies • 12 Rolo candies • Insert seven pieces of candy corn in a fan shape into half of the Double Stuffed cookies. Position each cookie perpendicular to a remaining Double Stuffed cookie; attach with chocolate frosting. • Using chocolate frosting, attach a peanut butter cup and a kiss to the front of each cookie. Tint vanilla frosting orange. For eyes, attach two marshmallow halves to each kiss with a small amount of orange frosting. • Twist mini cookies apart; remove and discard cream filling. Attach a Rolo to each mini cookie half with chocolate frosting and attach to tops of turkeys Using remaining frosting, pipe pupils, mouths and legs on turkeys. Let stand until set.
