1. Welcome and Introduction Welcome from the Principal Cricket has been a major sport at Takapuna Grammar School since it was established 90 years ago, and it is a sport I am particularly fond of. In 2017 the school's sports department developed a draft strategic plan to deliver the school’s 11 major sports, including cricket. This means new systems and facilities to enable students to play competitively at the top level, and increase participation and enjoyment. There has been considerable progress in the last two years such as more young cricketers choosing TGS as their school and excellent coaching and training opportunities have been put in place. The cricket committee has lots of expertise and energy as does the local cricket club. However there is much more that can be done to enhance cricket here at TGS. I have asked Will Scovell to take on the TiC cricket role. Will has a high profile in sport and is a Deputy Principal so will be able to ensure implementation of agreed actions. I look forward to growing cricket at TGS with you. Mary Nixon Principal Introduction Thank you for your interest in Cricket at Takapuna Grammar School (TGS). We are a passionate, enthusiastic, welcoming and supportive team of players, coaches, managers and parents, and we look forward to having you on board this year. Cricket is a sport which is played by girls and boys at TGS and we cater for all needs – whether you just want to play casually or in a social team, or at the high performance level. As further described below, we are: - proud of our heritage; - enjoy strong partnerships with the North Shore Cricket Club and Belmont Intermediate School; - proud of our recent achievements; and - committed to a vision and have a plan to ensure cricket remains a sport that matters at TGS. 3
Our heritage … Takapuna Grammar School has a long and proud history of playing cricket, and producing great cricketers, including one New Zealand’s best ever, Bert Sutcliffe. Other TGS students who have had great careers for North Shore, Auckland and as Black Caps include Jack Cowie, Danny Morrison, Paul Hitchcock and Richard Jones. Our strong links with North Shore Cricket Club and BIS … We are fortunate to have a longstanding association with the North Shore Cricket Club which enables sharing of top level coaches, resources, and facilities and provides a structured pathway for players to continue their cricket with the Club after they finish school. This association between TGS and the NSCC has been formalised by an MOU which has existed since 2003. Our strong partnership with Belmont Intermediate School, and its support of cricket, is also important in terms of player pathways, sharing and learning, and our shared cricket facilities. Together with BIS and NSCC, we value and recognise that by working together we can produce great cricketers and grow and develop cricket in our community. 4
Our recent achievements… We are very proud of the recent achievements of our cricketers including: ➢ our 1st XI Girls, 2017 runners-up in both the Premier Auckland competition, and Auckland T20 Tournament. ➢ our 1st XI Boys, winning both the Auckland 1A Grade One Day and T20 competitions in 2017 – winning promotion to Premier Grade in both One Day and T20 this year. ➢ the Colts 1 Boys team finished a close second in the Colts 2 grade, narrowly missing promotion to the top grade. ➢ Seven players were selected to represent Auckland in cricket in 2017: Campbell McKegg (U17s, and National U17 Tournament winners); Samantha Petherick and Emily Handyside (U18s, and National U18 Tournament winners); Anna Browning, Ruby Worrall, Libby Easterbrook and Kennedy Scott (Auckland U15s, and National U15 Tournament winners). ➢ Sixteen of our students were selected to represent North Harbour in 2017. The North Harbour U15 girls (including 4 TGS players) won the Auckland Cricket District tournament going through unbeaten with Anna Browning (Captain) named tournament MVP. Our vision … Our vision for cricket at TGS is: ➢ To be the co-ed secondary school of choice for cricket on the North Shore ➢ To provide as many students as possible with the opportunity to benefit from the values of playing in a team sport through cricket ➢ To honour and respect our school’s traditions and heritage in cricket ➢ To build pride in the school through achievement and success ➢ To keep students connected to our community including to the North Shore Cricket Club, Belmont Intermediate and local primary schools. We will seek to achieve our vision by: ➢ attracting talented cricketers to TGS ➢ improving performance and having our teams and players competing at the highest level ➢ increasing the number of TGS students playing and participating in cricket ➢ ensuring our students feel proud to be cricketers of TGS ➢ having the best cricket facilities on the North Shore ➢ ensuring our local community is involved in TGS cricket, and knows that TGS is a “cricket school” ➢ ensuring that cricket is well organised at the school and is sustainable. 6

3. TGS Cricket Programme TGS Director of Cricket The TGS Cricket programme is led by Graeme Beghin, who is the TGS Director of Cricket. Graeme was appointed in 2016 and is contracted to undertake this role. Graeme is also the Director of Cricket at the North Shore Cricket Club. He has the level 2 Cricket South Africa coaching qualification and a post graduate diploma in sports management. Graeme comes from Cape Town in South Africa. He currently coaches and is opening batsman for the NSCC Premier men's team. He also coaches the NSCC women's Emerging Hearts team. He plays for the Auckland Aces in the Ford Trophy limited overs competition, and played for the New Zealand Select team in the Hong Kong World Sixes in Kowloon in October 2017. He was awarded the Laurie Schnauer Cup for players' player of the year at the 2017 Auckland Cricket awards. We are very fortunate to have someone of Graeme's talent and expertise who has made, and continues to make, such a significant commitment to cricket in our community. As Director of TGS Cricket, Graeme is responsible for all aspects of planning and delivery of the TGS cricket programme including all teams, coaches, managers, trials, training schedules, the TGS Cricket Academy, the winter programme, any player issues, player and coach recruitment and also deciding the annual cricket awards. Selection of Teams and Captains All teams are selected by the relevant team coach/es in consultation with Graeme. Players are trialed during practice sessions in the first week of Term 1. For the team captaincy, if there is more than one person in consideration, players will be invited to apply for the positon via Mr Scovell (TIC) and will be decided by a panel of the relevant team coach, Graeme and Mr Scovell. If necessary, they may meet with shortlisted applicants to discuss the role before making their decision. 10
Team Coaches Each team has a coach appointed to it by the TGS Cricket Committee, on the recommendation of Graeme Beghin. Ist XI Boys Coach - Coel Mahoney The 1st XI Boys team has a contracted coach, Coel Mahoney. Coel is a respected coach with experience from junior cricket to senior North Harbour District levels over a number of years. He currently plays for the NSCC Premier team. Coel has the Level 2 NZC Cricket coaching qualification. He owns "The Cricket Pavilion" which stocks handmade cricket equipment from around the world. Coel is responsible for coaching and training the 1st XI squad/team which includes two trainings per week and attending as coach for most games. Ist XI Girls Coaches The 1st XI Girls team is coached by Graeme Beghin and on game day, by Darryl Petherick. Other Coaches The coaches for the other teams are: 2nd XI Boys Coach – Rory Bessell (former TGS player) Colts Coach – Head Coach Ian McAlpine, assisted by former TGS players and current North Shore Cricket Club Premier players Matt Strain and Jono Kemp. These coaches are contracted via the North Shore Cricket Club to coach TGS teams, and are managed by Graeme. They coach the players during the week but are generally not available to attend competition games, due to their own cricket commitments. On game day we rely on the managers to coach and guide the players in their games. Team Managers Each team has a manager appointed to it by the TGS Cricket Committee. We rely on volunteer parents to fill these roles and we are very grateful to the following parents who have agreed to manage the teams this year: 1st XI Boys - Tony Arthur & Steve Browning (co-managers) 1st XI Girls - Gillian Scott 2nd XI Boys - Matt Christian 3rd XI Boys - tbc Colts Boys - Wayne Clough Each manager is responsible for the organisation of all games for their team including equipment, scorers, umpires and pitch set up. They are the key point of contact at each game should any issues arise. 11
Managers are the main point of contact for all communications to all players (and parents of players) in the team (via email and the team Facebook page) and for any questions from players or their parents. The managers liaise with the TIC and the sports dept. as required to ensure they have all the necessary equipment and other requirements for all games. Managers also provide game reports during the season so we can update the wider cricket community of the results. For the cricket tours (see page 9), the managers are also responsible for leading all the arrangements with the support of the sports. dept and designated members of the TGS Cricket Committee. Teacher in Charge of Cricket (TIC) The Teacher in Charge of Cricket is Deputy-Principal, Will Scovell. Mr Scovell is the key contact person for cricket matters in the school. If players or parents have any questions or concerns about cricket matters they should contact him. The TIC role is to be the "in school" link between those involved in cricket outside of the school (Graeme, coaches, managers, parents) with those involved in cricket inside the school (Sports dept., players, teachers, sports council). Mr Scovell will ensure cricket is promoted and encouraged at TGS. As TIC of Cricket, Mr Scovell looks after "in school" communications about cricket such as notices/reminders, successes and achievements, meetings, and other messages (eg cancelling of practice; use of nets etc). Any other school related issues such as discipline of players will also be dealt with by him. Mr Scovell will also lead the arrangements for inter-school fixtures and other cricket events held at school. 12
Team Trainings In Terms 1 and 4, each team has trainings weekly at the following times. Team Days Time Venue 1st XI Boys Tues/Thur 15h30-17h30 TGS 1st XI Girls Fridays 18h00-19h30 NSCC 2nd XI Boys Tues/Thur 15h30-17h30 TGS 3rd XI Boys Thursdays 15h30-17h30 TGS Colts Boys Mon/Wed 15h15-17h00 TGS There may be additional training sessions which will be advised by the managers to the players. Trainings are optional for 3rd XI Boys. Otherwise, all players are required to attend all trainings, on time, and to participate fully. If a player is unable to attend he or she must contact the coach directly. Repeated failure to attend trainings may result in non-selection or removal from the team. Strength and Conditioning By agreement with the North Shore Rugby Football Club, TGS has access to the NSRFC gym for strength and conditioning of its students participating in many TGS sports, at no cost to players. The gym entrance is situated in Beaconsfield Road, Devonport. The programme is led by Dean Rice, who is the Trainer for the North Shore Rugby Club's Premier 1 Team. Dean played for the Black Sox from 1988 to 2000 winning two world championships gold medals. Following retirement as a player he took on the role of White Sox assistant coach from 2002-2005. Dean is currently strength and conditioning coach for North Harbour 7s and North Shore Rugby. He has 18 years' experience as a personal trainer. All 1st XI Boys are expected to attend these sessions, held on Mondays, 3.30 – 4.30pm. Mental Skills We are fortunate to have the voluntary services of Tresna Hunt, a cricketing parent, to provide mental skills training for the players. Tresna has a PhD in psychology and leadership and is a registered psychologist and coach with her own coaching and consulting business. She will be offering mental skills training at the First XI training every Thursday afternoon. Any Academy cricketers interested in extending their mental fitness are welcome to come along. 13
4. TGS Cricket Academy In 2016, the TGS Cricket Academy was established to provide selected TGS players with potential to become high performing players to further develop their cricket abilities to the next level. The Academy programme consists of: • weekly training / coaching with Graeme and other high performance coaches • mentoring sessions with Graeme • for year 9 and 10 students, 1-1 coaching with Graeme during Sports Performance Institute (SPI) lessons or PE sessions (usually 2 sessions per student per term) • for year 13 students, 1-1 coaching with Graeme during study breaks The weekly sessions are held in Terms 1 and 4, on a Wednesday morning, 7:45AM to 9:00AM and include selected senior boys, Colts and girls. For 2018, players wishing to be considered for the TGS Cricket Academy must apply in writing on the form provided. Graeme will decide in his discretion the players to be selected taking into account their cricket ability, commitment to TGS cricket and goals for cricket. 14
5. TGS Cricket Expectations To ensure all players, coaches, managers, teachers and parents enjoy their involvement in cricket at TGS there are a few rules and expectations to be followed. Commitment and Participation 1. Players who register for cricket in Term 1, must play for the full season including term 4 (unless injured). Year 13 players may be able to play cricket for North Shore Cricket Club in term 4, by agreement with Graeme and the relevant TGS team coach. 2. Players are encouraged to participate in the winter off season programme where possible, taking into account that many players play other sports in winter which is supported by the school. 3. In addition to attending trainings and games, players are expected to attend all cricket meetings, fundraising events, prize-givings and to generally promote and support TGS Cricket as much as possible. Health /Injuries 4. Be SunSmart at all times on the Cricket field. Parents, Coaches, Teachers and Umpires should set an example and emphasize the Slip, Slop, Slap, and Wrap message. 5. If players are injured, they must inform their coach and team manager as soon as possible. This is to ensure their own health and safety but also to enable replacements to be organised as soon as possible. The school physio may be utilised to assist with sports injuries. Conduct 6. A good attitude is extremely important at all times not only for improving players' performance and team morale, but to ensure the enjoyment for all, including other players, coaches and managers. 7. As representatives of TGS, wearing the school colours, all players conduct reflects on the school, the team, coaches and parents and must be exemplary. Players are expected to wear the team cricket uniform correctly at all times. 8. The TGS School Rules apply at all times when training or playing cricket for TGS, including whilst on tour. In addition the TGS Sport Code of Conduct applies – see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_Y9uaC6528ERpL9mQ3tb_irYE8- YMYd63qHvcPB-OS8/edit . 9. Players, coaches, managers and parents involved in cricket must comply with the TGS Cricket Code of Conduct set out below. Any breaches of it will be dealt with by the school. Parents 10. TGS Cricket can't happen without input and support from parents. At least one parent from each family is expected to score or umpire during the season. Team managers will set up a roster for this. If you don’t know how to score or umpire, please make an effort 15
to learn how to do so from another parent or attend a training session with the North Shore Cricket Club or other club. TGS Cricket Code of Conduct Players Code: • Always play by the rules and within the “Spirit of Cricket”. • Display sportsmanship towards the opposition and respect for the umpires. • Treat everybody involved in the game as you would like to be treated yourself. • Always show respect for other players’ rights and self-worth regardless of their gender, ability, religion or ethnicity. • Play to your potential and always work together with your teammates. • Enjoy the competition and the fulfilment of achievement and success. • Turn up and participate fully in all trainings and games • Show respect and appreciation to the coaches, managers and others supporting TGS Cricket • Respect the decisions of the umpires without gesture or argument • Win with humility; lose with dignity Coaches/Managers/Parents code: • Promote enjoyment at all times for everybody participating in the game – ensure that the time players spend with you is a positive experience. • Set a good example of conduct that young people will follow – actions speak louder than words. • Show appreciation for other volunteer coaches, parents and supporters of the players and cricket at TGS. • Show respect at all times for umpires’ decisions and educate players to do so accordingly. • Have consideration for the views of others and remember that the players are involved in cricket for their enjoyment, not for the satisfaction of others. • Place emphasis on teamwork, and the players’ efforts and overall performance, and never ridicule any player for mistakes or for losing a match. • Ensure that every player participates in the game equally, and give the same time, attention and opportunities to everyone. • Ensure that all equipment and facilities are to an appropriate standard consistent to the level and grade of cricket being played. • When hosting teams at TGS, make sure visiting teams, parents and supporters are made to feel welcome, directed to facilities, and treated with politeness and respect. 6. Facilities and Equipment No.1 Grass Pitch TGS is fortunate to have one of the best grass cricket pitches on the North Shore. This is due to the hard work and dedication of Ian McAlpine, who is Head Groundsman at TGS. We are very grateful for the time and effort Ian puts into the no.1 field and also the artificial pitch on the top field. Cricket Nets In 2016 the cricket nets on the top underwent refurbishment with the netting fixed, new turf put down and signage. These are open and available all the time for players to practice. All trainings (including for the TGS Cricket Academy) are held either at the TGS nets or on the school pitches. With our close association with the NSCC, sometimes training will be at the Club as notified by team managers. Future Plans for Indoor Nets In October 2016, the school released a masterplan for the school for sports facilities, which includes an indoor cricket net facility. The TGS Cricket Committee is working hard to make sure it is located in the appropriate place; is of the appropriate size and quality; to source the funding for it and to get it built as soon as possible (hopefully 2018). This facility will become an important "home" for TGS cricket. We will be seeking players and parent input into fundraising for this exciting development for cricket at TGS. Player Equipment To play cricket, players are required to have their own gear. For trainings, cricket bags can be stored in sports dept. shed located inside the Old Gym. 18
Game Day Equipment Each team has a bag of equipment for each game including wickets, balls, scorebooks and other equipment which is the responsibility of the team manager. The committee is looking to source funding for additional equipment including training nets and other gear. Bert Sutcliffe Lounge (BSL) If a TGS team is playing a 40-50 over game at "home" on the no.1 wicket, the Bert Sutcliffe Lounge is opened up for the team to host the visitors and supply lunch. All players in the 1st XI are required to supply a plate for lunch for home games, as organised by the team manager. In addition, for "home" games, team managers should liaise with Mr Scovell to ensure the changing rooms and toilets are open and available for the players and supporters. 19
