SYOSSET CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT SUMMER SCHOOL 2020 PROGRAM INFORMATION ELEMENTARY MIDDLE SCHOOL HIGH SCHOOL
June 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians Welcome to Syosset Summer School 2020. This year’s summer program will be virtual and will extend from July 6 through August 14. Our staff has worked to create new and exciting learning opportunities that will provide the best possible virtual experience. Please take a few moments to go through the course listings below to decide which classes would best serve your child. You will find a broad range of remediation and enrichment classes. All summer school classes will be virtual and be a combination of both Google Classrooms and secure Google Meet platforms. Classes are broken down into two thirty minute sessions. A break-down of courses and times that are offered are listed below. Students who enroll in a course scheduled for Period 1 will return to that same course in Period 3. Students who enroll in a course scheduled for Period 2 will return to that same course in Period 4. Students who enroll in a course in Period 5 will also meet in Period 6. There is a designated school lunch break each day. Courses available prior to the School Lunch Break will be assigned a session break so that students may attend a course for virtual learning. Please use the Family Id App to register for courses by clicking the link here. After you have registered your child for a course, a Google Classroom Code that your child will use to join the class will be sent to your email. General Information: Course offerings are limited. Once a course is closed, no wait lists will be established and no additional sections created. Courses will be offered only if there is sufficient registration. In the event of insufficient registration, classes may be cancelled or combined. Registration will be open only to legal RESIDENTS of Syosset Central School District who are under 21 years of age and who meet the specific requirements for the course they wish to take. Please address questions to the Summer School office at 837- 8989. Fees: Pre-registration/registration fee is $3.00. The fee is for registration and processing and is not refundable. Fees may be paid by check only and made payable to Syosset Central School District. Attendance Requirements: Absences in remedial high school credit courses are not permitted in Summer School, regardless of the reasons. When a student accumulates absences in excess of three days for any credit course, he/she will be dropped automatically from that course. Any lateness up to 15 minutes is considered half an absence. A lateness of more than 15 minutes is considered an absence. Regulations do not permit auditing courses. Dates: Classes begin on Monday, July 6. Enrichment Term 1 class dates: Monday, July 6 - Friday, July 24. Enrichment Term 2 class dates: Monday, July 27 - Friday, August 14. All classes end on Friday, August 14.

Elementary Remediation For students going into grades 1 to 5: Multi-Sensory Reading – This course provides Wilson Language instruction and is designed for individuals with significant delays in the development of basic reading skills. Students entering grades one through five are eligible for this structured language program. This course will draw upon multi-sensory instruction and based reading methodologies, including the Wilson Language Program, Fundations (Wilson Language Basics), and strategies for building fluency, basic reading comprehension skills, and sight word recognition. This course will help develop phonological / phonemic awareness skills, decoding and encoding skills, and reading comprehension skills utilizing interactive and collaborative Fundations, Guided Reading, and Readers’ Response lessons. The technological tools incorporated in these interactive lessons may include Raz Kids, Pear Deck, Google Jamboard, Google Docs, Google Slides, and Flipgrid. Remedial - Grades Kindergarten and 1: Periods 1, 2; Grades 2 and 3: Periods 2, 3; Grades 4 and 5: Periods 5,6. Elementary Basic Skills 3 This course reviews the skills covered in second grade to ensure a strong start for students entering Grade 3 in September 2020. Students will engage in two live Google Meet sessions each day (and will engage in an enrichment period in between). One session will be focused on English Language Arts skills: reading comprehension, writing and oral expression. The other session will focus on math skills: place value, operations, problem solving and fact fluency.The New York State Standards will be reviewed and students will receive some preparation for the third grade ELA and Mathematics Assessment. Remedial– Available Periods 1,3 & Periods 2,4. Elementary Basic Skills 4 This course will reinforce reading, writing and math skills for students entering Grade 4 in September 2020. Various Syosset approved applications will be used to create an interactive learning environment. Go Math will be used for math remediation and previewing lessons for 4th grade. MyOn NYS, NEWSELA, Pear Deck, Google Slides, FlipGrid, and many other programs will be used to reinforce reading comprehension and vocabulary. This course will blend skill work that students need to be successful in September along with engaging interactive activities. Remedial – Available Periods 1,3 & Periods 2,4. Elementary Basic Skills 5 This course will reinforce reading, writing and math skills for students entering Grade 5 in September 2020. Various Syosset approved applications will be used to create an interactive learning environment. Go Math will be used for math

No Red Ink will be used to help students create various writing pieces, as well as strengthen their grammar skills. This course will blend skill work that students need to be successful in September along with exciting and interactive activities. Remedial – Available Periods 1,3 & Periods 2,4. Reading/Writing Workshop Grade 3-5 – This workshop is for students who enjoy the reading and writing process and wish to improve and expand their skills. Students will continue to fine tune their abilities in a workshop setting using the approach of Teachers College at Columbia University. They will be exposed to rich, high interest text, while working on comprehension and writing skills. Some of the engaging technological tools to assist with delivery of instruction and assignments include Google Slides, online libraries, Nearpod, Flipgrid, Seesaw, and teacher created games. Enrichment - Available Periods 1,3. Middle School Remediation For students going into grades 6 to 8: Language Grade 5 to 6 – Our Grade 5-6 ELA class will focus on the beginning steps of writing a successful paragraph. These steps will begin with reading comprehension and determining a theme or central idea. In addition, we will review vocabulary and grammar. These skills will be taught through the use of Google Classroom, Google Meet and sites such as Newsela and IXL. Remedial - Available Periods 2,4. Middle School Language– This is a remedial course which will provide students extra help with reading comprehension and writing skills. The class will focus on text based responses as well as creative expression through writing and project based learning. Throughout the summer, students will develop literacy skills through the exploration of different texts, engaging projects, and interactive activities. Students will have the opportunity to practice reading and writing daily, as well as the choice of researching their own selected topics for each
week’s project. Remedial - Available Periods 1,3 & Periods 2,4. Math Grade 6 Transition– (for students entering grade 6) – This course is designed to prepare students for the Middle School mathematics program and help them succeed in 6th grade. Instructional time will focus on three critical areas from grade 5: (1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication and division of fractions; (2) developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and (3) developing understanding of volume. Classes will be taught using Interactive Google Meet, and packets which will be posted daily in Google Classroom for students to either print or open on their chromebooks for editing. Remedial – Available Periods 1,3 & Periods 2,4. Math 7 Transition– (for students entering grade 7) –This course is designed to review Grade 6 topics and help them succeed in Grade 7 mathematics. Instruction focuses on two critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers. The instruction will take place online through the use of Google Classroom, Desmos and online instruction. Remedial - Available Periods 1,3 & Periods 2,4. Math 8 Transition– (for students entering grade 8) – This course is designed to review Grade 7 topics and help them succeed in Algebra1 CCSS in Grade 8. Instruction focuses on topics from Common Core Math 7 and 8 such as: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations. The instruction will take place online through the use of Google Classroom, Desmos and online instruction. Remedial - Available Periods 2,4; Periods 5,6. Reading/Writing Workshop Grade 6-8 – This workshop is for students who enjoy the reading and writing process and wish to improve and expand their skills. Elementary/Middle School Enrichment Courses For students going into grades 3 to 8: Advanced Computers & Technology – Students will learn different computer skills and will explore programs such as Prezi, Book Creator, Pear Deck and more. Additionally, they will learn about coding and engage in STEM projects that will challenge them as critical thinkers. This program is designed to help students become more comfortable with nrichment – Available the newer technologies they will be using in today's classrooms. E Periods 2,4 & Periods 5,6. Art Projects – We are so excited for you to join our art class remotely this year! Art classes will be incorporating various methods such as google meets, and Flipgrid to create awesome projects. We will be using materials such as craypas, paint, markers and pencils. See how art can come to life through a computer. Available for Youth - grade 3-5; Advanced - grade 6-8; and Art Projects - grade 3-8. Enrichment – Available Periods 1,3; Periods 2,4 & Periods 5,6. Beginner KidOYO - This course will be using kidOYO. It is designed to introduce students to basic coding skills while developing programming logic and problem solving skills. Students will be introduced to coding concepts including use of coding blocks, loops and conditionals, broadcasting, digital citizenship as well as the Scratch programming language. Students will learn to use programming software, Hatch, while engaging in creative projects and challenges. This course will prepare students for success in next-level coding courses. For Grades 3-6 and 7-12. Enrichment - Available Periods 1,3 & Periods 2,4.
Chorus- Singing in the Summer for Grades 6-8 - The Middle School Virtual Experience - Students in Grades 6-8 will learn unison, 2, and 3 part choral music in a large group setting. Music will be chosen appropriate to age and vocal range. The class will warm up daily and students will learn the basics of sight reading in both large and small group settings. Students will be given weekly private/small group vocal coaching sessions to learn and explore solo literature and vocal technique. Students will participate in weekly masterclasses where soloists will present material to the class. Enrichment - Available Periods 1,3. Computers & Technology – This class will be a project focused class using the Google Suite as well as the Internet to enhance computer skills. Creative and fun projects will be utilized to engage students and maximize knowledge of computers. Projects will include, but not be limited to, Google Slides, Web Design, Promotional Multi Media using Google Docs/Sheets, and resume building. Enrichment – Available Periods 1,3; Periods 2,4 & Periods 5,6. Destination: Relaxation with Yoga and Mindfulness - Join us for a combination of 1/2 hour Hatha Yoga and 1/2 hour mindfulness/meditation. Students will learn background information and experience through practice how these two ancient practices can relax and strengthen your body and mind. Simple props may be required such as a straight-backed chair and a towel or yoga blanket. Enrichment. -Available Periods 1,3; Periods 2,4. Digital Photo Production – This class will focus on the manipulation of digital photos in a project driven course that is sure to be fun and engaging to all students. The students will learn how to download and manage photos on the internet using fun projects through the Google Suite platform. A digital camera (phones can be used) is recommended but not required. - Available Periods 1,3. Explore Long Island - This course offers a unique approach to Long Island history by using media as a major part of each class. Videos filmed as we navigate areas of Long Island from Montauk to Long Beach, as well Google Classroom will be used to illuminate selected historical locations. Class discussions and fun activities will be related to the locations we explore. Enrichment. -Available Periods 1,3; Periods 2,4. Music (Band or Orchestra) – Students from elementary (minimum one-half year experience) through advanced levels of musical ability will receive one-half hour group lesson
weekly. Grouping will be according to instrument and experience. Students registered for other classes will leave those classes for their scheduled lesson. Guitar and piano instruction are not offered. Beginner instruction (students who have not yet started on their band/orchestra instrument) is not offered. Please indicate instrument and number of years experience when signing up. Enrichment – Available as Pullout Period 1, Period 2, and Period 3, Period 4, Period 5, Period 6. Physical Education – Students will engage in a variety of physical and skillful challenges as well as learn about the proper form and technique to complete them. They will also be instructed on personal fitness and wellness. The instruction will take place online through the use of Google Classroom, online instruction and various other online applications. PE classes will be designed for Youth, Middle School, Advanced and High School students. Enrichment - Available Periods 1,3; Periods 2,4 & Periods 5,6. Science Research – Science research classes will include experimentation, building and using your imagination. Our tradition is to continue making ice cream on the first day. We look forward to having lots of fun this summer by experimenting using nature. The district will provide kits again for our planes, catapults, cars and bridges. The class will involve the scientific method and will offer lots of hands-on activities. Parents will have to provide some simple supplies. Enrichment – Available Periods 1,3; Periods 2,4 & Periods 5,6. Spanish Grades 3/4– Bienvenidos to Spanish Enrichment Grades 3 & 4! Estoy muy feliz to have you in our class! During this wonderful opportunity we will be “traveling” around some of the 21 Spanish speaking countries to learn their language, culture, and customs. Classes will be interactive via Google Meet and handouts will be posted in Google Classroom for students to either print or open on their chromebooks for editing. Be prepared to have fun with music, games and exciting projects!! No previous language experience needed! **Art & Craft supplies will be distributed prior to the beginning of our sessions. Enrichment – Available Periods 1,3. Spanish Grades 5/6 – Estoy muy feliz to have you in our class! Whether you know español or not we will be engaging with the language visiting wonderful places around some of the 21 Spanish speaking countries to learn their language, culture, and customs. High School Enrichment Art Portfolio - This course will be offered to Syosset students in grades 9-12 with a strong interest in art and a desire to create pieces to enhance their art portfolio. A bag of art supplies will be given out to each student and they are encouraged to create a space at home where they can work on their art each day. This online studio class will introduce students to a variety of projects and techniques which will then be worked on during class time and on their own. Projects will include, but are not limited to, drawing, painting, cell phone photography and sculpture. Students are also welcome to work on their own topics and interests with guidance and advice from the art teacher. - Available Periods 1,3; Periods 2,4 & Periods 5,6. Business for High School- Learn the important steps to opening your own business. From start up costs to advertising, to accounting to writing a business plan, this class will culminate in students creating their own business. The instruction will take place online through the use of Google Classroom, online instruction and various other online applications. Enrichment. -Available Periods 5,6. Chorus- Singing in the Summer for Grades 9-12 -The High School Virtual Experience - Students in Grades 9-12 will explore and learn choral music in a large group setting. Music will be chosen appropriate to age and vocal ranges. In addition to exploring choral literature, students will learn vocal warm ups and technique in both a large and small group setting and also some basic music theory in order to sight read in both single and multiple parts for treble and bass clefs. Students will be given individual/small group vocal coaching sessions to work on solo literature of all styles and will have the opportunity to work on audition material for upcoming auditions, college auditions, NYSSMA solos, or anything else they would like to prepare. They will also participate in weekly masterclasses. Enrichment. - Available Periods 2, 4. Everyday Leadership- Have you ever wished you felt more confident and had more respect from your friends and classmates or wished that adults and others really heard what you had to say? As a teen you have many exciting paths to explore. You may feel overwhelmed by the possibilities or pressure to please a lot of people. When it seems unclear which path to take, it's human nature to wonder, “Who am I?” “What do I care about?” “How can I make a difference?” This course will inspire you to discover some of the answers to these questions, as we look at what it means to take the lead in everyday situations and in out-of-the-ordinary ones. Some skills to be learned: Active Listening, Growth Mindset, Public Speaking, Conflict
Resolution, Community Service. We will also be discussing the areas of "Social Injustice". Some topics in relation to "inequities" to be explored are: Race, Gender, Age, Sexual Orientation, Religion, Nationality, Education, Mental or Physical Ability. Everyday leaders can affect these inequities in a variety of ways! Enrichment - Available Periods 5,6. Beginner KidOYO - This course will be using kidOYO. High School HIGH SCHOOL REMEDIATION - Academic high school courses are remedial and are reserved for those students who need to repeat those classes. They are not for those who wish to advance themselves by taking a class in advance of their school year. Absences are not permitted for any reason. When a student misses more than three days, whether absent or late, he/she will be automatically dropped from the course. High School courses may not be audited. ENGLISH COURSES: Our High School English classes will focus on reading comprehension and writing. We will determine themes and central ideas by citing, analyzing and understanding proper evidence. In addition, we will review and practice the necessary steps needed to write a successful, detailed piece of literature. These skills will be taught through the use of Google Classroom, Google Meet and sites such as Newsela and IXL. Available for English 9, English 10, English 11 and English 12 Remedial - Available Periods 2,4. MATH CLASSES: Algebra 1 CCSS – This Summer school course is designed for those students who have previously taken the course for the Algebra 1 CCSS or Algebra II CCSS Regents examination. The critical areas of this course deepen the students’ understanding of linear and exponential relationships by contrasting these relationships with each other and by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Students will engage in methods for analyzing, solving and using quadratic functions. Students will master the solution of linear equations and apply related solution techniques and the laws of exponents to the creation and solution of exponential equations. Students also expand their experience with functions to include more specialized functions such as absolute value, step and those that are piecewise-defined. Class instruction will take place online through Google Classroom, online instructions and various online applications. Remedial – Available Periods 1.3. Geometry CCSS – This Summer School course will be for those students who have previously taken the course for the Geometry CCSS Regents examination. Students will explore more complex geometric situations and will deepen their explanations of geometric relations including formal mathematical arguments. Transformational geometry will be emphasized throughout the course. Students will establish triangle congruence criteria based on analyses of rigid motions and formal constructions. Students will use triangle congruence as a foundation for the development of formal proofs. The concepts of similarity will be used to
solve problems and to understand right triangle trigonometry. Students will develop the Laws of Sines and Cosines in order to find missing measures of general triangles, building on students’ work with quadratic equations done in their previous mathematics courses. Students will prove the basic theorems of circles and the relationships between the segments and angles in a circle. Class instruction will take place online through Google Classroom, online instructions and various online applications. Remedial – Available Periods 2 ,4 & Periods 5,6. Algebra II CCSS – This Summer School class is designed for those students who need remediation for the course and the Algebra II CCSS exam. This course will develop topics including intermediate algebra, advanced algebra, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry, the complex number system, sequences and series, probability, permutations, combinations, and statistics. Class instruction will take place online through Google Classroom, online instructions and various online applications. Remedial – Available Periods 1,3. PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES: Physical Education – This course is for secondary students who have failed to meet the Physical Education graduation requirement. Class instruction will take place online through Google Classroom, online instructions and various online applications. Remedial – Available Period: to be determined by enrollment SCIENCE CLASSES: Science – Biology/Living Environment – The in-depth topics in the Biology syllabus are limited to those stated as minimum requirements. Completion of 30 required lab hours must be met during the regular school year before this course can be taken. Class instruction will take place online through Google Classroom, online instructions and various online applications. Remedial – Available Periods 2,4. Science – Chemistry/Physical Setting – The in-depth topics in the Chemistry syllabus are limited to those stated as minimum requirements. Completion of 30 required lab hours must be met during the regular school year before this course can be taken. Class instruction will take place online through Google Classroom, online instructions and various online applications. Remedial – Available Periods 5,6. Science – Earth Science/Physical Setting – All aspects of the earth and its environment are studied in this course. Completion of 30 required lab hours must be met during the regular school year before this course can be taken. SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSES: Social Studies – Global History and Geography 9 – Starting and development of civilizations in Africa, Middle East, China, Latin America, Japan, India, Russia and Europe up until 1750. Each of these areas will be explored looking at geography, political, economic and social development, religion and cultural achievements. Through the use of primary and secondary sources, bias, point of view and the validity of sources will be explored. Writing of CRQ's (Constructed Response Questions) and Enduring Issue Essays to align with the recent changes to Global History will also be emphasized . Remedial – Available Periods 1,3. Social Studies – Global History and Geography 10 – Continuation of curriculum and skills started in Global 9. Starting with 1750 and continuing to the present day, this course will prepare students for the new framework of Global History and Geography. Remedial – Available Periods 1,3. Social Studies – U.S. History and Government 11 – This course explores from the development of colonies in America to present day issues with an emphasis on the Constitution and government. The use of primary and secondary sources will be used extensively to help students better understand point of view and bias. Writing of CRQ's (Constructed Response Questions) and Enduring Issue Essays to align with the recent changes to the U.S. History and Government regents will also be emphasized. Remedial – Available Periods 2, 4. Social Studies 12 - This course gives students a study of the U.S. system of government and the criminal justice system. Economic concepts like inflation, supply and demand, the stock market and personal finance will be explored. This fulfills the requirement needed for graduation. This course is designed in 2 half-credit courses (.05) Term 1 and Term 2. Remedial – Available Periods 2,4.

If a class is full, every effort will be made to arrange schedules based on requests. Please note that Enrichment classes are available in two terms. Term 1 will begin on Monday, July 6th and end Friday, July 24th. Term 2 will begin on Monday, July 27th and end on Friday, August 14th. We reserve the right to make adjustments based on availability. 5. Once courses are filled, no additional sections will be created and there will be no wait listing. 6.
