Safe & Sustainable by Design - The concept An approach to the design, development and use of substances, materials and/or products that focuses on providing a function (or service), while reducing harmful impacts to human health and the environment
European Partnership Processes4Planet - Circular and Climate Neutral Industries Form: Co-programmed partnership Partners: Industry, represented by the A.SPIRE (cement, ceramics, chemicals, engineering, minerals and ores, non-ferrous metals, steel and water sectors, and others) Lead DG(s): RTD, GROW Predecessor: SPIRE contractual PPP Budget: 2.6 billion Euro (Horizon Europe + private investments) Roadmap: Processes4Planet 2050 Roadmap Launch: MoU signature ceremony on 23rd June Work Programme 2021/22
‘A new flagship initiative – Hubs for Circularity’ Concept, opportunities & challenges for successful implementation As Part of Processes for Planet (P4P) Partnership roadmap, the Hubs for Circularity (H4C) will be a key instruments to advance the research and innovation agenda of European industries towards the Green Deal’s objectives. These first-of-a-kind, lighthouse demonstrator plants of (near) commercial size are implementing industrial symbiosis and/or urban industrial symbiosis. The aim is to collectively achieve and demonstrate at scale, a leap towards circularity and carbon neutrality in the use of resources (feedstock, energy and water) in a profitable way. H4Cs have a strong technological focus and industrial dimension, but their implementation leverages elements well beyond research and innovation. Specific implementation strategies (including funding) will have to be co -designed, ensuring the participation of all stakeholders; industry, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), research and technology organizations (RTOs), local authorities, educational institutions and civil society.
Why does it matter ? Mc Kinsey (2020) – Net-zero projections by sector • Sectors need to reduce emissions in parallel • They will reach net-zero in sequence • Industry is expected to reach the target in 2050 Important to take action now ! • Scaling-up existing technologies and businesses • Accelerating innovation and investments • Use AI to find new pathways Lessons from circular economy are accumulating: gains making the transition outweigh efforts and risks ! Decouple value creation from resource consumptions: Adopting circular economy principles • New technologies for new value chains • Optimise yields from resources • Make systems more effective • Remove negative externalisation
