MARLICE 2019 MARINE LITTER is a man-made solid waste which, for various reasons, ends up abandoned in marine and coastal environments. It is estimated that 80% of marine waste comes from land-based sources. Marine litter represents a GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGE. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and the Convention on Biological Diversity of United Nations consider marine litter one of the greatest threats to marine biodiversity. Connectivity through ocean currents makes this a TRANSBOUNDARY PROBLEM which needs cooperation among countries.
MARLICE 2019 ARE WE IN TIME TO SOLVE IT? The complexity of the problem and its global nature requires coordination and involvement from various sectors of society: scientists, governments, industry and productive sector, consumers, non-governmental entities... The development of a CIRCULAR ECONOMY is a priority strategy to achieve a solution.
MARLICE 2019 WHAT IS THE AEBAM? The SPANISH ASSOCIATION OF MARINE LITTER was founded with the goal of unifying efforts of public and private institutions concerned about marine litter in order to improve and speed up ranges of work that will improve the management of this problem. Its FOUNDATIONAL CHALLENGES include encouraging forums that bring together different sectors to define criteria for action and establish common route lines. AEBAM has actively participated in different consultative processes for the development and implementation of European regulations in this regard: Programme of measures of the Spanish marine strategies, Marine litter reduction: actions on single-use plastics and fishing gear, Microplastics, Citizen Decalogue Against Marine Litter, etc.
MARLICE 2019 WHY THIS INTERNATIONAL FORUM? It is necessary to attract interest on the problem of marine litter of the European and international regions to improve the KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROBLEM at transnational level and to explore RECOVERY ROUTES of natural areas and waste, within the framework of the CIRCULAR ECONOMY concept. The strategic situation of Spain between two European regional seas makes it a privileged area for the development of a constructive discussion meeting in the SEARCH FOR COMMON SOLUTIONS.
MARLICE 2019 Venue: Seville Spring 2019 (3 days) No. participants: 250 Profile of participants: - Public administration: representatives of international conventions for the protection of the marine environment. - Research: representatives of the main groups of research on this topic (initiatives of research and development in the topics of upcycling, reuse and recovery of materials at the end of their life). - Business sector: representatives of iconic companies in waste management, recovery, producers, recyclers, eco-design, etc. at national and international level. - Environmental conservation entities: representatives of the leading entities of large international projects on marine litter.
MARLICE 2019 DYNAMICS OF THE FORUM Several HUBS OF ACTIVITY will be established amongst different sectors to articulate CONFERENCES, ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING GROUPS. Generation of open dynamics based on multidisciplinary working groups will enable to produce a framework document of conclusions to enrich policies already initiated at European and international level in the field of marine litter and to boost possible markets derived from the PROCESSES OF UPCYCLING through DIRECT CONTACT between stakeholders of different nationalities.
MARLICE 2019 SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM All sectors are invited to work together as sponsors of this event, which will allow them to BECOME AN ACTIVE PART against this major environmental threat and to see first hand an EMERGING MARKET in line with the concept of CIRCULAR ECONOMY. We already have the support of the SPANISH MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES, FOOD AND ENVIROMENT and Ecoembes Spain through LIBERA Project, as the first ones involved in the search for new solutions to marine litter. A maximum number of sponsors and a range of benefits depending on the level of sponsorship are established (see table below).
