A Message from Sandra W hen I first met Keith in 1960, little did I realise what an impact he would have on my life. He became my best friend and soulmate. To say WE never had a row is quite true. I often argued with him but, in his annoyingly calm way, he would DISCUSS and work out any situation to bring my argument to an end. He always encouraged and gave me the confidence to do things that I know never would have been done without his support. We had been married for about 3 years when he suggested that we needed an adventure and, perhaps, it would be a good idea to do a bit of travelling. So, we arrived in Hong Kong, with a brand new baby daughter in tow, to start what I thought would be 2 years of the good life, relaxing in the sunshine on exotic beaches. How wrong was I!! Good life?…most definitely yes…Relaxing? Never! For the first 21 years in Hong Kong, working with the ESF, life was busy, to say the least. But, when at the age of 50, he decided to change career and we joined the HKCC workforce, life was never the same again! Most of all, I would like to give my, and I know Keith’s, Memories of those days come rushing back….the Top Bar thanks to Michelle. With her gentle kindness and on a Saturday night…always lively. HKCC… HOSTING THE COMMUNITY Sports Development Officer, Kingsley Kelly, reports… T he new sporting season is upon us and has been noticeable with all the serious pre-season training happening around the Club. The weather has ensured that each sports section had to endure either scorching heat or wet starts leading towards their competitive season. I would like to wish all HKCC representatives success over the coming months. This Gappers season we welcome back “Black Rain”, teaming up with Cricket Hong Kong in an initiative to develop a group of young Chinese local children. The HKCC is pleased to offer 17 scholarships to participate in the full Gappers programme. Also confirming an ongoing partnership with Hok Shan School on a regular basis. Incorporating a similar Cricket and Hockey programme, we look to include other sporting sections as part of the rotation. HKCC will once again work alongside Po Leung Kuk. We have confirmed a number of sessions whereby we welcome the arrival of the children and look forward to assisting them as they develop within the sports that we offer. The schedule set out will also have HKCC taking a sporting session into the School. Our major goal is to enter into new relationships with various local schools, outside bodies and national sporting associations. The relationships that we form deliver the chance to have individuals take part in different sports, whereby, in most cases, they have not been given the chance. We have seen many Members get involved but the programmes can only be as strong as the coaches/volunteers delivering it and this is where we would like to encourage any assistance, so come along and get involved! For those not familiar with the Duke of Norfolk’s XI, it is a scratch cricket team consisting of a collection of club players, some driving several hours to participate. In the past the Duke of Norfolk’s XI has played fixtures against touring international teams at Arundel to commence their UK tours. Now we had left London with clear skies overhead but the weather deteriorated over our two hour coach ride and it soon became clear that play would be impacted. Persistent rain would continue for the balance of the morning and early afternoon. The first game, to be captained by Paul Watkins, was called off in the late morning and the second just before afternoon tea. It was a quick-fire 28 from Alex Brookes at the end that proved to be key as HKCC reached 158/9 at the end of the 35 overs. HKCC knew it was going to be a tough chase, despite Wimbledon CC having a very strong batting line-up.
