HKCC… HOSTING THE COMMUNITY O n 8th November, HKCC hosted a Sports Day as over 90 children aged between 3-6, came in on a clear Autumn afternoon, with smiles from ear to ear. We welcomed the NTW & JWA Yuen Long Nursery School for a day that consisted of an obstacle course race, cricket games on the Ground and multi-sports in the Sports Hall. Each group was divided into teams of 30 and alternated between venues every 30 minutes. A special thank you to our HKCC Coaching staff – Genevieve Rowe, Cri-Zelda Brits, Luke Jones and James Miles for leading fantastic sessions that enabled the children to enjoy some basic cricket skills and sports activities. Also, to our Sports and Recreation staff for assisting in coordinating the event throughout the afternoon, making sure everything went smoothly and in a safe fashion. We always strive to deliver the highest standard in an appropriately caring and professional manner to contribute to the development of the children in a safe environment. HKCC look forward to working with the NTW & JWA Yuen Long group again soon. Kingsley Kelly Sports Development Officer THE PINKUN | December | 2018 23
CRICKET From Captain of Cricket, Sean Robson Sunday Round Up The Wanderers achieved an emphatic victory against USRC at Mission Road. Nizakat Khan continued his outstanding national form from the Asia Cup against India when he fell just a few short of an ODI century, this time hitting 103 from just 69 balls. Chasing 148, captain Ben Zanol remained unbeaten on 41. USRC were 23 for 5 and never recovered as Stu Tohill and Nizakat recorded the outstanding figures of 10-4-2-14 and 5-2-6-3 respectively. The Optimists carried on their fine run with an easy victory over Sri Lanka Tritons. Batting first, the Tritons scored just 106. Dave Marriott and Martin Versfeld took three wickets each, Hassan a couple, while Raunaq took one for seven from six overs. In chasing down the target, Hamish Dickie scored 30, David Jacquier 20 and Mark Farmer remained undefeated on 28. They were defeated by KCC Infidels, whose 217 proved too much for us to chase. CRICKET Singapore Cricket Club 127 All Out lost to HKCC 1/128 by 9 wickets Saturday 3rd November I n a battle between two of the oldest Cricket Clubs in Asia, and the two International Financial Centres of Asia, HKCC were pumped and ready for action after 2 heavy losses to SCC in the past 6 years. A win was very much needed on our home ground. SCC batted first and got off to a flyer with Nick Dormer hitting 6’s at will. Adil and Kinchit bowled well and pulled things back, but HKCC were in trouble at 0/49 after 7 overs. The “Big Booster” Martin took the ball and bowled one of the finest ever fast bowling spells for HKCC seen in the past decade. Swing and seam, pace and cut, guile and pace - he had it all as he ripped through SCC taking an extraordinary 6/24 - with many of his wickets being bowled. A dominant Man-of-the- Match performance Luke Jones (the second best leg spinner at HKCC) took the ball and bowled with lovely flight and spin to grab 3 wickets and SCC collapsed losing 9 wickets for 60. Farmer was quite brilliant behind the stumps, as were HKCC in the field, with great catches to Adil, Massey and Dan Clyne in the deep. With Massey grabbing the final wicket, HKCC were set 128 to win. Farmer got us off to a flyer, with robust support from Varley at the other end, as HKCC moved along swiftly to 89 without loss. Eventually, Farmer was dismissed for 40, as Luke Voyce played a valuable little cameo to finish on 16* and Varley 49*. A comprehensive and important win for HKCC against a brilliant bunch of lads from SCC. The game was played in the right spirit and a great meal from the Chef was enjoyed, with plenty of banter and stories shared in the Chater Tavern. We all look forward to the rematch and the continued building of the relationship between SCC and HKCC. David Varley Captain THE PINKUN | December | 2018 25
