Chef Patrick has put together POXY CHICKEN New book by Club Member Frank Wingate Former Club soccer player Frank Wingate has reduced his remarkable experiences of the 21 years he lived in Hong Kong to a personal history in book form entitled, “Poxy Chicken” with so many aspects of Hong Kong life which we have all shared with him including lives as Football Club Members. He was of course a school teacher, journalist, public relations executive and finally entrepreneur, and so treats us to his trials and tribulations with life here on matters as disparate as education, politics, business, night life, and specific difficulties such as the plight of domestic helpers’ existence, media exposure, the Chinese written and spoken language, and accommodation struggles in getting and sustaining reasonable housing. And of course soccer life at Football Club undercurrents everything. This eloquently written book is reinforced with photographs which for some will present rich nostalgia. A copy of the book is now available for lending at the Club Library. 4 Apr 2017

ADVERTORIAL Get your kids unplugged this summer When summer vacation comes around this year, most kids will celebrate the last day of school by grabbing a smart-phone, turning on a game console, or logging into a computer to play video games. Like a scene from a science-fiction movie, the world’s children will sit in front of screens in air-conditioned rooms, sealed off from the outside world while they interact with fictional characters in a digital world. Entertainment options will include watching TV, movies, and cartoons. Social interactions will occur via keyboard, with limited or no face-to-face interactions. While minds are temporarily entertained by the virtual world, bodies that should be developing physically will remain inactive for hours, or even days at a time. Parents have a great option to get kids unplugged and into nature this summer, at iCamp Thailand an American-style summer camp in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. The camp is purpose built with a range of activities designed for kids 8-16 years old. Sunscreen or Computer Screen? iCamp Thailand has a “no-screens” policy, and is focused on improving kids’ social skills and self- confidence through physical activity in the great outdoors, while interacting with and meeting new friends from around the world. Campers enjoy activities such as archery, horse- riding, volleyball, an obstacle course, swimming, basketball, tennis, soccer, arts & crafts, music and dance lessons all hosted within iCamp Thailand’s 50 acre campground. On-campus activities are supplemented by field trips to special attractions around Kanchanburi. Places visited on field trips include Elephant World, Erawan Waterfalls, West Wonder Waterpark, Safari World, Kra Sae Cave, the Bridge on the River Kwai, Hell-fire Pass, the JEATH War Museum and others. Camps run for three weeks per session and are available from June to August 2017.
