This will be better for the environment and saves printing costs. However, for those who prefer a paper copy of Lizard Lives, they will have one through their letterbox as normal now (all being well). I just need to know who would prefer to look online. So for those not wanting a magazine, please let me know with your address by emailing editor@lizard-lives.uk Many thanks, Sue. 6 MULLION HEALTH VOLUNTARY CARS Sadly, our services continue to be suspended due to the CoVID-19 pandemic. We made this decision at the start of the lockdown for the safety of both our clients most of whom are in the vulnerable or extremely vulnerable categories, and our volunteers, the majority of whom are over 70 years old. We are governed by our committee of Trustees, who review the situation approximately once a month, or at other times if Government rules or advice change. It is an especially difficult situation for us because it is essentially impossible to achieve the required social distancing in private cars, and this adds to the risks we already have because of the age etc of our clients and our volunteers. Before lockdown, our telephone number had changed, and in the meantime the old number has been disconnected. To contact us, or just to listen to our outgoing message which will tell you whether our service is suspended, just call 07487 221 102. Our answering service on this number is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. If you leave a message we will get back to you. 88 Mary Jane Do You ever wonder What Happened to Mary and Arthur JANE? Mary Jane, born 1st December 1924, passed to a better place on 28th July 2020. Mary Jane Walsh born in the busy Industrial area of the East End of London’s Dock Lands, then a very busy shipping area, with many allied industries connected with import/ export. The area was run down, many homes were substandard. Mary was one of nine siblings; after the school years work was easy to find; Tate and Lyle sugar refinery; Standard Cable company; then, Mr Hitler decided to reshape the country! London Docks being high on his list. The major bombing of the area is well documented. One horrendous action was the bombing of Hallsville Road School, an holding place for children ready for evacuation. The school full of children with their carers was blasted out of existence; there are no records of the numbers lost, guesstimate, in the thousands. However it was during this raid, while sheltering in their bomb shelter, their own shelter was buried from the fallout of the debris of the school and their own home. For three days, Mary her sister Hellen, with two aunts were buried, then recovered unharmed. It was during the war that Mary and Arthur Jane from Ruan Minor met. Arthur was an Able Seaman attached to the cable ships on operation PLUTO (pipeline Under the Ocean) with his cousin Raymond Hendy from the Lizard. Arthur and Ray met Mary with her sister Hellen in a pub “the Spanish Steps”, that was situated next to the seaman’s mission. That was where Arthur and Ray were staying while their ship was reloaded, with a load of cable at the Standard Cable Company. Mary and Arthur continued their relationship. They married after the war ended, so Mary Jane Walsh became Mary Jane JANE. They had three boys, Brian, Tony and Dennis and the family remained in the East End. Arthur stayed with the Standard cable company before taking work with the London Transport
where he continued for 40 years. It was an highly respected job in those times. Mary and Arthur were offered a move back to Higher Croft Parc, in The Lizard, which they were encouraged to do, by their boys. So they moved to Cornwall, where they spent most of their spare time. The boys stayed in London, however, with their growing families. Mary and Arthur had many happy memories of family and friends. They were active in village life; Arthur sang with the St. Keverne Male Voice Choir and he served on the Lizard Lifeboat committee for many years. Mary supported him and took part in many activities (behind every man there’s a strong supportive woman). Eventually Arthur passed away in October 2018. Mary, losing her sight, with failing health, could not look after herself, so a place was found for Mary at the “Little Trefewha Care Home”, in Praze-an Beedle, near Cambourne, in November 2018. Mary loved the Care Home very much; three meals per day if she wanted, clean sheets, a room to herself and the residents got on well with each other, enjoying each other’s company. They took part in quiz nights and she said, it’s like being in an holiday hotel. The atmosphere was splendid, with the help of the staff and carers, it was second to none. Sadly, Mary passed away quietly in her sleep, in the early hours of 28th July 2020, aged 95 years 7 months young! Mary still had her sense of humour, with all her faculties to the end. Mary’s funeral was held on the 12th August 14:00hrs at Treswithan Downs Crematorium, Cambourne. Numbers were limited due to the Covid-19, but the service could be seen via Podcast. Mum had a good long life; she had many good friends in Cornwall. Mary, Mum, is now at rest in God’s hands! Dennis Jane (son).

FRIENDS OF KENNACK SANDS As you are probably aware Kennack Sands monthly beach cleans have been suspended due to the Coronavirus. We are hoping, if Government advice remains the same, that they can restart on the first Sunday in October. This will be a safe start with Covid-19 regulations in place regarding social distancing and use of equipment. Date for your diary Sunday 4th October 2020. John was able to continue with his work on keeping the beach clean starting back in June 2020. Other volunteers have also helped. Fire sets and dog mess have been an issue again. JUNE: John has cleared 10 fire sets and removed 21 lots of dog mess plus approx 5 black sacks full of rubbish which has included, soiled tissue, sanitary products and recycling like cans that were thrown into the hedge and lots of broken glass. JULY: Several black bin bags of litter collected including lots of broken glass, large chemical container, soiled nappies, disposable BBQs, several fire sets, lots of dog mess and general litter strewn around. AUGUST to 17.08.20: 13 black bin bags, rotting prawns in a cool bag, several lots of broken glass, broken beach chair, clothing, surfboards, plastic toys, beach parasol, 14 fire sets with one still smouldering, lots of dog mess – this included emptying dog waste bin which was so full of other rubbish it was impossible to put dog waste bags in, and human excrement. There has been lots of free, wild camping during the Summer months – camping is allowed but please respect the area and - leaving it as you find it, would be much appreciated. So please, take all your litter home, including disposable BBQs; do not build new fire pits or pull-down living trees for fires. Sensible parking would be helpful as well by not using the turning bay. Money found donated to Air Ambulance box at Ruan Minor Stores. LEAVE ONLY FOOTPRINTS!

Bass Point on the lookout… again The NCI lookout at Bass Point is back in business after a three-month shutdown for Covid-19. Summer months would normally see a three-watch system in place, starting at 0800 and closing at 2000. However, in order to minimise the number of handovers the watch pattern has been reduced to two watches per day – 0900-1300 and 1300-1700. The lay-off was deeply frustrating for the team of 34 watchkeepers and four trainees. But the reduced footfall on the cliff path and fewer vessels at sea meant that the period of closure did not witness any serious incidents involving walkers, sailors or fishermen. Inside the lookout, a new ultra -hygienic system of cleaning and disinfecting means that hopefully the team are as safe as is possible in the circumstances. Reduced footfall on the coast path has resulted in a significant drop in income for Bass Point and this – combined with cancellation of the lookout’s charity collection days in Helston and Penryn – makes the station even more reliant on charitable donations in the months ahead. So, if you are passing Bass Point, please feel free to put something in the collection box. The book stall has also reopened with many new good-quality thrillers on offer. Ross Durkin

Pastoral Letter – September 2020 Five years ago I was in Treliske Hospital, recovering from a very major and, as it turned out, a life-saving operation. I had come out of intensive care and the high dependency unit, and was in a general medical ward. The wonderful (and very young-looking!) surgeon decreed that the clips holding the (10 inch) wound together should be replaced by what is known as a ‘vac dressing’, which would help to drain all the nasty bits and hasten the healing of the wound. Without going into too many gory details about that particular procedure, I can only say that the pain was intense – actually, it was excruciating! I thought to myself: “Take deep breaths; breathe through the pain; breathe through the pain ...” But then ... there ... through the pain, against the backdrop of the curtains surrounding my hospital bed and all that was going on – there was Jesus - looking down at me, me! from the Cross; looking down with eyes so full of compassion and love, and saying – not with audible words, but words spoken through his eyes: “I feel your pain; I share your pain; I am with you in your pain.” That was real; and no one can take that vision away from me. And it left me with the most incredible sense of peace and of God’s Presence at that most challenging time. During this pandemic, during lockdown, you may have asked yourself, “Where is God in all this?” (in my opinion, any reassuring answer was not helped by our churches being locked). Or perhaps the question is one you’ve heard other people ask – not just from non-believers, but also from other Christians and people of other faiths who have been, and still are, struggling with the same question. So, where is God in all this?
Answer: God has not abandoned us. God is with the hospital staff tending to the critically ill Covid-19 patients; He is holding the hands of the dying; He is with the bereaved. God is also in the many random acts of kindness: the young child ‘virtually’ walking from Lands End to John o’Groats on her cross-trainer to raise money for a local care home; Captain Sir Tom raising £38million for the NHS; the kindly neighbour fetching shopping and prescriptions. And God is with each one of us, even as we wrestle with the on-going constraints of lockdown and the uncertainty of what the next weeks, months may hold. “I feel your pain; I share your pain; I am with you in your pain.” God has not abandoned us – nor will He ever. 27 The team at MSP In June, we helped Mustard Seed Property (MSP) launch a community share offer, which seeks to raise funds to develop additional housing that will provide urgent support for vulnerable adults with learning disabilities in Cornwall. The latest share offer follows the first successful raise of £300,000 in 2007, which enabled MSP to buy an old bed and breakfast property, which positively changed the lives of five families. Ten years on, this property has been through a number of iterations and is now used by their charity partner, St. Petroc’s, as a supported house for formerly homeless individuals. Another share offer was launched in 2018, raising another £350,000 enabling MSP to buy an additional property in Redruth. MSP are now seeking to raise a further £600,000 from individuals and organisations to convert the recently purchased second property in Redruth (into 3 flats plus 3 studios, with an additional shared communal space) as well as to purchase a third property to help even more vulnerable adults across Cornwall. Since 2007, over 40 vulnerable adults have been helped by MSP, who would otherwise be in homelessness hostels, other unsuitable housing or even in some cases rough sleeping. The positive impact this has on those around them is also considerable, whether as respite for parents coping with grown-up children with learning disabilities or for the friends and families of those who would otherwise be in desperate need. The team at MSP follow us @MSPCornwall [10] or find us on Facebook [11] w/ mustardseedproperty.co.uk [12]
Mobile Library Wed 16th September 9.45 - 10.30am Our services need to be adapted to pandemic conditions and it is important that we provide a safe service, therefore we will not be able to allow customers on board the mobile library to browse, instead books will be returned/issued at the door, observing the current social distancing measures. We will begin by offering a ‘click and collect’ service - you order books for collection using the online catalogue and collect when we visit. Please note that some books may take a while to arrive if someone else has borrowed them so please allow for this when you place your reservations. We are also offering a ‘staff selection’ whereby you tell us your favourite genre in advance and staff will issue a selection of books based on your preference, so that you can take away some books even if the items that you have reserved do not arrive in time for your scheduled stop or if you are unable to place your reservations online. https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/libraries/ your-local-library/mobile-library-service/ Joanne.Zimber@cornwall.gov.uk Tel: 0300 1234 111

Parish Council Update As we welcome back the hard copy issues of Lizard Lives this month, we are conscious that some of its readers will not have been able to keep up to date with the online Parish Council updates. As the country went into lockdown on March 23rd, the Parish Council volunteered to assist Cornwall Council and the Lizard Peninsular Covid-19 support group in co-ordinating a number of volunteers and requests for help. We are pleased to say that we had far more offers of help than we did requests for it. In the event that we go into a second or localised lock down, any resident that requires any assistance can contact the Parish Council for support. The Parish Council was unable to hold any meetings in April or May but following a change in legislation was able to hold online meetings in June and July. The Parish Council does not meet in August but will hold its next meting online (via zoom) on Thursday 10th September. All members of the public are invited to attend the meeting - please email the clerk for the joining instructions. For meeting agendas and minutes please see www.landewednackparishcouncil.org.uk or in the village square on the noticeboard. To contact the clerk please email clerk@landewednackparishcouncil.org.uk or phone 07852 535689.

Landewednack Rainbows Unfortunately we have not been able to have our meetings since March as advised by Girlguiding UK and the Government guidelines. We have been sending out activity ideas for the girls every week until school actually broke up in July. They also each have a badge book and can do any of those badges. Here are the badges that some of the girls have done over the lockdown. Thanks to parents who have sent in photos of their Rainbow’s work so I can mark their records for next time we can meet. If your daughter has done something and you haven’t let me know please do so that I can record it. Don’t worry if you have not manged to do anything, we can catch up later. Girlguiding HQ are working hard to put plans in place for us to return to Rainbows while keeping us safe, but probably not before the end of September anyway. I have had some enquiries about starting Rainbows over the break so hope we will be able to welcome new Rainbows soon. I will need more help when we start again so if anyone (you don’t have to be a mother) would like to get involved, please contact me. Lynne (Linnet) 01326 290681

39 Lizard Lockdown Story Competition During Lockdown, an online challenge was given to all Lizard Village children, to write a story, on the subject: “An Event on The Lizard” of up to about 700 words and with pictures: with three age groups - 4-6s, 7-10s and 11-16s. Anna was the winner of the oldest age group and her story and pictures are printed here pages 40 - 44. The judges decided she is a talented young writer. Her story stuck to the brief of a short story, which isn't easy, without curtailing it and told a tale which was very captivating and descriptive with a very good command of language. Second prize went to Emma and third prize jointly went to Harold and Percy. In the next few months magazines, you can see other winners and their stories.
EVENT ON THE LIZARD The moment I hopped down from the cab, that fizzy, summer feeling reached down from the sun and tickled my racing heart. The buzzing sea of people radiated a unique, friendly warmth. Glistening tractors twinkled as their proud drivers manoeuvred the rumbling vehicles into position for the show and shine. The squeals of children filled the humid air as they thundered past the first stall, a hair’s breath away from bringing the hog roast tumbling down the freshly mowed banks. I stood posed, unable to draw my eyes away from the unfolding excitement, a deer in headlights as Mrs Gallot managed to squeeze the beastly horse lorry through the archway. Makeshift and swaying, the sign above the archway read “The Lizard Agricultural Show”. “Hey Faye, could you unload my tack and brushes whilst I grab Steren out the back?” Angela’s roaring voice snapped me out my trance, and I turned to see the horse lorry was now parked amongst the gathering of trailers and shining ponies with smartly plaited manes. Some of the younger riders were already warming up for the gymkhana games, and judging by the green and brown smears on their pony club sweaters, there has already been a couple of falls! It was going to be an eventful day. Angela and I chattered nervously as we tacked Steren up and gave her some last minute finishing touches to her sleek, bay coat before the first show jumping class. Then the scream.
A ghostly howl rang out across the busy village green. It’s cold, sharp tinge of death sliced clean through the warm atmosphere of the village green. Possessed, everyone’s heads snapped round and stared cautiously and curiously at white bell tent labelled “win a pony”. Dropping Angela’s tack box and hurling myself towards the tent, I fought my way through the resistance of hands that grasped at my shoulders in a feeble attempt to stop me. “Faye! Faye, don’t…” Angela boomed, slapping her leather gloved hand against her pristine white breeches in exaggerated dismay. I didn’t hear the shouts of disapproval, I was deafened by desperation. I made a dive underneath the tent and scrambled through with all the strength I could summon. A nauseating stench instantly seeped through me, leaking through my veins and chiselling it’s way to the marrow of my bones. As my eyes adjusted to the dismal darkness, I could just make out the wriggling worms of filth that trickled down the rotten walls. Flashes of silver chains and sharp utensils glinted in the bleak lighting. The tent poles creaked and screeched eerily, desperately crying out a warning. Cold fingers of fear teased my soul, threatening to take my lungs in it’s inescapable fists. I pleaded with myself to turn and leave, but my heart drove me forwards. The awful scream of an animal sounded again, but this time it was cut short in one sharp gasp and followed by a series of dry, rasping coughs. I craned my neck over a makeshift wall of fungus ridden pallets and squinted. My heart skipped a beat. Skeleton. Camouflaged against the darkness, I could just make out a shape of a black pony. Trembling, coughing, and with legs as limp as cotton buds, the wretched animal looked on the verge of death.
Hot tears of disgust pricked at my overwhelmed eyes. I reached out to run my fingers over the pony’s hollow neck, but my arm was grabbed and twisted vigorously. A sly voice hissed through the silence “No escape now, pony girl,” the man reached round my back with his other clay like hand and firmly grasped his unyielding fingers around my dry, gasping mouth to prevent the screams from leaving my shaking body. Fear strangled me, piercing my throat with it’s harsh, hooked talons and drawing me in. A cool iceberg trapped itself within my rib cage and momentarily stopped my heart from beating. The man reached out an arm to take hold of one of the glinting chains strung up on the grimy tent canvas. In doing so, he took me in a neck lock and released my arm from behind my sweating back. If it wasn’t for what happened next, I would have submitted myself to this inescapable imprisonment. Perhaps I would have been rescued, and look back on today with a sceptical view. But that didn’t happen. The skeletal frame of the lifeless creature beside me fell to it’s scarred knees. A few dry breaths rasped their way through the pony’s blood spattered nostrils. Driven by horror and compassion, my body took action. In one swift move, I used my free arm to grab the most robust looking knife from beside the cold, silver chains. As my arm sprung back to me, I used the solid handle of the knife to knock the man against the his temple, bringing him down with a heavy thud. The blade of the knife proceeded to pierce open the harsh, canvass of the disguised jail cell of a tent and I pulled the knife towards the ground, creating a large slot as big as a door.
My eye were wide as saucers as I surveyed my surroundings. Hot beads of sweat tumbled from my forehead. The plump man on the floor began to stir, caressing his injured temple with his meaty hand. I felt like a vampire, blinded as the light flooded in from the door I had created. At the smell of fresh air, the light at the end of the tunnel seemed to surface in the pony’s once dull, hopeless eyes of sorrow. With trembling knees, the pony managed to stand. I reached out and softly rubbed the animal’s thin skinned forehead. The pony cautiously swivelled his ears and showed the whites of his eyes and, although untrusting from what may have been a life of pain, I noticed him sigh a deep breath of relief in my presence and his muscles noticeably relaxed. I felt my heart swell with deep admiration for such a strong soul. Tears welling in my eyes as the pony fought to stay on his feet, I knew I had to help him, he looked desperate to escape. I grasped his ropey mane led him towards the exit. His creaking frame strained to add a spring to his step as he trotted out on to the green as if he couldn’t believe his luck. Filled with new found energy of hope, he took off in a stiff canter. His sides heaved with effort as he broncked and bucked like a youngster and flicked his heels in the air with great bounds of joy. I laughed with delight, it was all I could do to stop myself from dancing! Then, drained from the eruption of energy, the pony trotted wearily towards me. But this time, there was a glint of love and content in his large glossy eyes. I ran my hand lovingly over his gaunt frame and allowed him to lean against me. He still shied cautiously away from me with his head, but strong trust would take a while to build. Unable to hold himself up, the black skeleton of a pony dropped to his knees and tucked his stick like legs neatly beneath him, he lay resting in the rich summer grass before me. I felt a firm hand on my shoulder. The man? Fear! Panicking, I snapped round dramatically. It was Angela.
She crouched beside me and gazed quizzically at the skeletal pony. “You know, if we fed him up a bit, he looks as though he’d have a fair bit of life left in him.” Angela’s knowledgeable voice gave me comfort. “Tell you what, let’s get him in the lorry with Steren. We’ll take him back to our stable and get the vet out. He’d be yours, and there’d be no guarantee he’d pull through. A lot of responsibility, but you’ve proved yourself for me and Steren over the years,” Angela’ generous words left me speechless. My gaping mouth transformed to a huge grin. I swung my arms around Angela’s broad shoulders and thanked her again and again. Then I turned back to the pony. “From now on…” I spoke soothingly and excitedly to the bag of bones, “From now on your mine, and your gonna be living the dream!” Anna.

The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Station 8th August 2020 - Following a 999 call received by HM Coastguard, The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat was launched on service shortly after 9.30pm. After a report of an orange object seen on rocks and above the waterline, the lifeboat proceeded to Halzephron, Gunwalloe. Upon arrival on scene the smaller Y-boat was deployed from RNLB Rose to carry out a more intensive investigation at the foot of the cliff. Mullion Coastguards were also in attendance and guided the lifeboat to the scene with search lights from the cliff top. It was soon ascertained that the object was fishing equipment which had most probably fallen from a vessel and had washed ashore. Thankfully there were no signs of any casualty being involved, and after retrieving the equipment the lifeboat returned to her station at Kilcobben Cove a short time later. 9th August 2020 - A second call out in 24 hours for our crew as they were paged again shortly before 6pm. The lifeboat was launched on service to reports of an inflatable dingy with 2 people on board in possible difficulty in the bay between the lifeboat station and Cadgwith Cove. Upon arrival on scene it was clear that the two people did not require our assistance. RNLB Rose proceeded to escort the dingy and its occupants safely in to Cadgwith Cove before returning to her station. A false alarm made with very good intent. 9th August 2020 - Our third call of the weekend for our crew (and second of the day) came at 9.55pm. RNLB Rose was launched on service to go to the assistance of an 18ft inflatable rib which had lost all engine power and was drifting precariously in the area of Polbream Cove, at Lizard Point. Upon approaching the scene two white flares were set off by the lifeboat crew to ascertain the position of the rib and its one person on board. A tow rope was attached and the rib was safely towed in to Polpeor Cove at Lizard Point, where its occupant was assisted by two local fishermen who were waiting to help transfer it from the water and on to its trailer.
11th August 2020 - The Lizard Lifeboat was launched on service at around 3.45pm this afternoon to reports of an orange inflatable with two children on it being swept out to sea in the vicinity of Pentreath Cove, near Kynance Cove. Whilst the lifeboat was proceeding to the scene it was understood that the two children had managed to get themselves ashore. With access to Pentreath being quite restricted, HM Coastguard requested that the lifeboat collect the children and take them to Kynance Cove before they attempted to clamber up the rocky cliff. However upon RNLB Rose's arrival on scene it was ascertained that the children were safe with members of the Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team, allowing the lifeboat to be stood down and return to station. 15th August 2020 - The lifeboat launched on service shortly before 11.30am to go to the immediate assistance of a 26ft catamaran which was taking in water. In a position of 2 miles SW of Lizard Point, upon arrival on scene the catamaran was listing 60 degrees to her port side and was in serious danger of sinking. Two lifeboat crew members were put aboard the stricken vessel which had one person on board. The lifeboat salvage pump was immediately set up to pump out the water coming in to the catamaran. Once stabilised, a tow was attached and the vessel was safely towed in to Newlyn Harbour, arriving there at approximately 2.30pm. RNLB Rose had arrived back at her station by 3.30pm and was again made ready for service when required. With our station still CLOSED to visitors, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the annual Open Day in October and our Christmas Carolaire in December. Both of these events will be sorely missed in our calendar this year and we very much hope to be welcoming visitors to our station at Kilcobben Cove again very soon.
The Lizard Lifeboat Service/Call-outs will not be disrupted and RNLB Rose is on call as usual – normal service will always be the order of the day. Up to date news, information, photographs and events can be found on the station’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages. 50 Landewednack School & Little Lizards Nursery It was certainly a rather unusual end to the summer term, one like we have never experienced before. No Easter Fayre, sports day or sporting events, summer production, school camp or graduation ceremonies! Along with all schools and nurseries we closed our doors on Friday 20th March as the country entered lockdown because of the corona virus pandemic. With our school children reverting to learning from home for several weeks, we were delighted to be able to welcome some of our children back from 1st June. We had ensured that all of the correct procedures were put in to place and the last 7 weeks of the 2020 summer term were thoroughly enjoyed by children and staff alike, as we all tried to gain some sort of normality back in to our lives again. With current guidelines being followed and adhered too, we so look forward to welcoming back ALL of our children on Monday 7th September. Our new Reception children will join us on Monday 14th September. We wish our leaving year 6 children all the very best at secondary school. We also don’t want to forget our former Landewednack pupils who never actually got to take their GCSE exams this year – so we wish Amy, Holly, Jessami, Hannah, Libby, Marnie, Emily, Oliver, Finn, Oscar, Nathan, Thomas, Matthew, Josh, Rudy, Zane and Melvin all the very best in their next step after leaving secondary school. All of these youngsters will now be known to us as “The Class of 2020” Lyndsay Bray Landewednack School www.landewednack.cornwall.sch.uk Tel: 01326 290337 Photos on back - page 52
