Desperate Times calls for Desperate Measures. ‘Thank You’ Message Contributed by Gympie South Lions (January 2020) We all know some places are worse off than others due to the long dry of 2019. Early in January 2020 a local family contacted Gympie South Lions to see if anyone could come along and help pick a sizeable mango crop ready for transport to a drought stricken property a few hours away from Gympie. The mangos would be feed to the cattle to help them survive. A team of merry Gympie South Lions banded together and were able to help. They worked hard to help the family, who were already receiving some support from other family members and friends. But mangos all ripen at once……so many hands make light work. Hi Cathy, This is Kathrin, Chris & Felix, we stayed at the The fruit was picked and the truck was loaded ready for transport. LOST AND FOUND THE STORY OF THE LOST J.D.RICHARDSON PIN Barry Green from Cowra Lions Club in NSW lost his James D. Richardson Award pin when he was attending the 75th celebration of the Breakout at the POW Camp in Cowra. He searched and searched for this pin for weeks, even with a metal detector....but alas no joy! I am a Member from Tewantin Noosa Lions Club in Queensland and I received a phone call from a very kind lady who had taken the time to ring and tell me that whilst she was holidaying in Cowra, she found a Lions pin which she described. Because it was a J.D.Richardson pin, I immediately went to her home and retrieved the pin in order to send it to the rightful owner. I thanked her on behalf of Lions and the owner of the pin (whoever it was). I contacted the Cowra Lions Club by email and received a very prompt reply from their Secretary (Sue Thomas) advising me that a long standing Member (Barry Green) had lost his pin. When I rang Barry Green, he explained that he had lost this pin in on 29th July at an event that he attended in Cowra. Barry was very happy to know that his pin was found. This lady (Beverley Evans) found the pin on 21st October when she stepped out of her car to admire the Memorial in the park and found the pin at her feet. Unfortunately, she was on a tight schedule and didn’t have time to investigate the pin in Cowra so she kept it safe until she arrived home. That’s when Beverley rang me to see if we could find out who it belonged to. So after an email and a phone call the pin had found its owner. Needless to say Barry Green was elated and very grateful. By the way Beverley Evans lives in Doonan Queensland which is 1,168 km from Cowra. By the way, after lying on the ground for two months, the pin still looked brand new - no scratches or damage. There are some wonderful people in our community. Thank you Beverley Evans. Story by Beverley Heaney - Tewantin Noosa Lions Club. Every stamp received is sold and every cent coming from the sales is passed on to the Australian Lions Childrens Mobility Foundation. At the Geelong Convention last May the donation was a record $48,000. The Stamp Club secretary, Lion Ross Paine (Q4) said that they have noticed a drop off in donations this year and he is urging clubs to keep pushing the project in their areas so they can hopefully match last years total. Ross has recently changed his address and the new address for clubs in the Q Districts to send their stamps is, Lion Ross Paine, PO Box 9399, Pacific Paradise. 4564 FEBRUARY 2020 Lionhunter 19
Diabetes Walk - Lap the Map I was not sure what to expect from the lap the map event our club had decided to be involved in. I decided I would enlist my wife and a friend to take part as well. That way I would have some company. The route was simple. Head out to the main gate, turn right, walk up to Pattison Street and turn right again. We were to follow the path all the way to the Lions Park. But there was more! After reaching the park a little bit further to Sleeman Street. Here we would turn back and take a rest at Lions Park. Seeing this as another opportunity to support a healthy community Emu Park Lions hosted their inaugural “Lap the Map Diabetes Walk” on Sunday 17th November. Participants armed with their route map and the “Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool” and assessment sheet set off on their 3km walk that also highlighted other Lions projects along the way. Commencing at the Lions monthly markets they followed the Pattison Street gym trail (also a Lions diabetes project) stopping in at the recently upgraded Lions Park for a water break and taking the time to complete their assessment sheet before continuing on to complete the walk passing several of the newly installed historical trail “emu” signs, another significant project of the Emu Park Lions Club.
