18 Clevedon Game Fishing Club HOOKS AND No! I think they have all gone in search of my ‘NOT’ so secret spot. Oh well good luck HOOTERS to all. The weigh-in/prizegiving was held at Clevedon Sports Club at the A&P 21 & 22 SEPTEMBER Showgrounds. There was a wee problem with the club electronic scales during which time everyone was taking glances The weather forecast was looking at the coolie bins to see if any tails were unbelievably superb – swell 0-0, sticking out. Thanks to Scott Lane who chop 0-0 with winds light and variable. helped with the scale problem the catches Wow! That makes a nice change from were all weighed and recorded. Some some fishing competitions I have been in. results as follows: Wild Turkey was loaded up and we headed • 1st place heaviest snapper – Lynda off down the river on Thursday afternoon – Geary (Wild Turkey) because we can! • 2nd place heaviest snapper – Lizzie With settled weather we decided to head Lane (Odysseia) across to the Coromandel side catching a few pannies on the way – not a good sign the water for this one. I wasn’t going to let • 3rd place heaviest snapper – Lynda but a little vac packed for the freezer. it get away. I thought at least I won’t be Geary (Wild Turkey) embarrassed weighing this one in. Saturday morning we ventured out early, • 1st place heaviest Kingfish – Laurel but the fishing wasn’t going so well and Skipper says “Okay you probably don’t need McWatt (Hoodlum) there was a little slop off the coast that to do any more fishing!” Really! It’s only 1pm wasn’t supposed to be there. We decided on day one – this is a fishing competition. Best dressed team was won by Black Ass to make a wee move into a more sheltered Skipper Rulz! A relaxed cruise back across to – Squaw, who had lost her tribe (her team spot where I was going to have to catch Chamberlain’s Bay where we had a wee raft from last year I believe). Followed by so myself some bait. Skipper had obviously up gathering for the night. The evening was many prizes of which too many to mention. not held out too much hope of my fishing crisp. Wild Turkey had the heater, so pre- ability, so very little bait had been put on dinner drinks ended up in our boat all warm Although the fish caught this competition board, along with the remains of a small and cosy. LIZZIE LANE I had to work a bit harder as my fish was pulling more line out than I was getting in. The warm sun came out just as we were finding a fishing spot for the Hooks and Hooters Finally my beauty snapper came up and ladies fishing competition. It took a while before we got some bites and we caught a few weighed just under 15lb. Yep we have ‘old’ decent sized snapper and gurnard. But I knew they weren’t winning sized fish. We moved scales. Actually I think it sounds better in spots and I started fishing again. A few moments passed and then... boom! I hooked a big pounds. This was the biggest snapper I had fish! I managed to get the snapper in and from my memory it weighed around 5kg! And ever caught and even the net had a dip in even better it got me second place! It was a tense action packed exciting day!

20 Clevedon Game Fishing Club KIDS DAY Conditions were perfect, when kids – young and old, hit the Hauraki Gulf for a day of fishing, before a barbecue and lolly scramble on Pakatoa Island. Mums, Dads, uncles and aunts, and various other hangers-on all helped the kids, with some big catches! It was also lovely to see the kids caring for their environment, and organising a rubbish pick-up on the beach. This annual event is eagerly awaited. Krissy does an amazing job of putting together participant packs, so everyone leaves with something, plus some tall tales of the ones that got away.

Yearbook 2020 29 INTER CLUB CHALLENGE A beautiful weekend at the start of November was the backdrop to the annual interclub challenge against the Counties Game Fishing Club. It was Clevedon’s turn to host, and there was plenty of friendly banter between the East and the West as fishing got underway. Counties had nearly double the number of Clevedon’s boats and anglers in the water over the weekend, and both teams caught some great fish. The points system meant that the winner on the day (for the third year running) was Counties. But the real winner of day were more than 150 local families. Shirley and Anne from GRG came along not a scrap is wasted. The weigh-in confirmed that Stephen on EURO had the winning fish and Spot X had delivered. He had information that Spot X (somewhere in the Hauraki Gulf) was where a winning fish could be landed, this made the weigh in a non event as other snapper presented were obviously somewhat inferior in size and weight so it was obvious to all that there was no contest and Stephen was the clear winner. For the Junior prize Caydenon Plumb Crazy was the only junior entrant and declared the winner for that category.
