But that’s not Le Groupe Maurice’s vision. Luc upheld and defended his values. What do the both of you have in common? L. Maurice: Energy. Having it is one thing, but being able to share it, to convey it to people, to mobilize the troops, Paul is great at that. After watching him for many years, I think I’ve managed to tap into some of this energy, as well. P. Tellier: Behind my house, there’s a 175-year- old barn. And there was a tree—a huge one—that I feared would fall on the roof. Luc said, “We’ll cut it down, don’t worry. And we’ll get it done before supper.” (laughs) He immediately fired up the chainsaw and cut the tree into firewood before it was time to eat. The barn was saved! I’d say we also share an appetite for risk, determination and ability to take action. Mr. Maurice, do you think there are still things you can learn from Mr. Tellier? connection is very much alive. They often tell us, “Everyone has such beautiful smiles here.” Y. Pilon: We do, in any case! We always have beautiful smiles. (laughs) What’s your secret to living a long life? M. Mayrand: Since my husband died, I drink a little glass of red wine with cheese and soda crackers every afternoon around 4 p.m. But the most important thing is to keep busy. Both have been working for the company for almost 20 years. We asked these two pioneers what convinced them to stay on this adventure for so long. How did you end up at Le Groupe Maurice What were things like at Les Résidences du nearly 20 years ago? Marché in the early days? Lyne Boudreau: I saw an ad in the paper for L. Boudreau: We had to create everything from a residence that would be opening up in my scratch, right down to deciding what our positions neighbourhood. I was working at a daycare at would be. We had to use the stairs because the elevators were reserved for the construction workers. I lost ten pounds going up and down those stairs! The director of Université Laval’s pension fund was the first person to support senior-loving entrepreneur Luc Maurice’s project to build his first retirement home. We asked him what inspired that confidence. THE INNOVATOR 34

It all started with a call from a friend, asking me if I’d meet with someone named Luc Maurice. Investors are often approached to help people. The ones I always agree to meet with are people who have just lost their job or are changing careers, or young entrepreneurs. In other words, people with drive. And that was the case with Mr. Maurice? That’s right. The first thing I asked him was, “But why do you want to open up a seniors’ home? There’s nothing exciting about that. And certainly nothing glamorous!” He answered, “Because I like seniors.” And for the next two hours, I listened to him tell me why. I wanted him to prove how much he liked them. Anyone can say, “I love retired people.” But I knew he was sincere. He wanted to make a career of it, and his approach was different. He wasn’t coming at it from a business angle. He was thinking like a human being. That’s what made him different. For example, in the early days at Les Résidences du Marché, we realized that the dining room wasn’t profitable.
