IZZA SHAH (PREMIER LEAGUE GIRLS PROGRAMME/ROCHDALE AFC LADIES)

Izza Shah is a shining success story for us and someone who displays exactly
what the Premier League Girls Programme can achieve. She did not have
much support during her beginnings playing football due to cultural barriers,
family pressures and the stigma attached to South Asian girls wishing to play
football, however Izza with the support and resources from the project through
Rochdale AFC Community Sports Trust, Izza now plays affiliated football for
Rochdale AFC Ladies Under 15’s in the South Manchester Girls League.
“The programme has really helped me to play the sport I’ve always loved from
the bottom of my heart. It’s given me the confidence to express myself and
I’m now playing for Rochdale AFC Ladies. I would have never thought this was
possible some time ago, like it was a pipe dream that was unachievable. I hope
one day I can represent the Open Age team. I’d love to keep getting better and
become a professional, but if that doesn’t happen for whatever reason, I wish I
can help other girls from my community that maybe in the same situation I was
in and show them that there is options available to them”
“I am very proud of the progress my daughter has made playing football. I admit, at first, I did not want her to
play or take part in football as I thought that this is not really something girls from our community get involved
in. I just thought that it was something she was doing to pass time and eventually it would stop but she told
me herself that she does want to play and this is where her interests lie” Dureshahwar Khan (Izza’s Mother).

ARMAAN AHMED (PREMIER LEAGUE KICKS VOLUNTEER)

Armaan’s journey is nothing short of amazing, from a Kicks participant who
attended with some friends having a kick around and some fun, to now a
volunteer coach, surpassing even his own expectations to some degree.
Armaan is now getting more and more involved in various projects we have to
offer to widen his skills and knowledge in the coaching industry, he is someone
Rochdale AFC Community Sports Trust coaches are confident will have more
positive news to feed back on in the future. The PL Kicks initiative really has
had an amazingly positive impact on Armaan, hopefully developing into a role
model and inspiration to new recruits.
“When I first came it was just all about coming and having fun with my friends
in our spare time. On a Friday night, we have older friends or people we know
that are out until really late doing other things but I was not interested as me
and my friends just wanted somewhere to go to play football and have a good
time. I then learned about the Kicks programme at Rochdale Leisure Centre
and this is where I attend as much as I can, so much so, that if I can’t come for
whatever reason I am very disappointed. The Kicks sessions are so enjoyable and it’s brilliant to see so many
young boys and girls from different areas and different backgrounds coming to play football together. I enjoy
the things we do together as groups, it really gives me a sense of ownership and belonging and makes me feel
much more valued. I have now been volunteering to assist in sessions having taken some sports awards and
love helping the Community Sports Trust coaches, this is a direction I see myself going into in the future”

LUKE WALSH (ROCHDALE AFC INTERNSHIP WITH REDWOOD SCHOOL)

Luke has been assisting Community Sports Trust coaches through the
Internship partnership with Redwood Secondary School, a pioneering
programme we believe is the first of its type at a professional Football
Club and something all parties are extremely proud of. Luke has
been a ray of sunshine with his commitment and enthusiasm when
undertaking activities ranging from coaching in Schools to attending
the Dale’s Silver 60s’ group at the Club.
“I’m really passionate about where I consider my pathway is when
I leave School with working in the leisure industry the way I see my
future, especially here at Rochdale AFC. I love working at the Club and
all the various activities the Community Sports Trust put on and I get
on well with all the coaches. I hope there is a position for me when my
 time has finished”
“Luke is a fantastic advert for the Internship programme, always asking for advice on how we deliver activities
plus his enthusiasm to work is amazing. He challenges the coaches for knowledge about the coaching and
exactly the input of sessions attending reflected in his questioning me about the Primary Stars programme. He
is someone, who despite his condition, commands respect from people he works with including young children
and work colleagues. I’m sure the period he has been with us will be extremely beneficial to him in whatever
pathway he chooses” Graham Hicks – Community Sports Coach.

CALVIN ANDREW (PFA COMMUNITY PLAYER OF THE YEAR)

Calvin Andrew was voted the Community Player of the Year, an annual
PFA Award for his support in the local community attending the many
activities undertaken in an extremely positive manner. Sometimes he
is given late notice but always turns up with a smile on his face and a
raft of knowledge to present to attenders.
“I believe it is our obligation as professionals and role models within
our country to support the wider community. It is fantastic to see the
fans of tomorrow and how much it means to them. I find it extremely
rewarding to give time back into the community. I feel supporting
the Community Sports Trust here at Rochdale is a part of being a
professional player and it allows us to contribute to the growth and
 support of this community”
“Once again it is a pleasure to select Calvin Andrew as Rochdale AFC Player in The Community for 2018/9. Not
only is his professionalism recognised on the pitch but his support and professionalism off the pitch for the
Community Sports Trust is second to none. This is his third consecutive year he has been nominated for the
award, which he thoroughly deserves. He has had a huge presence within the community this year again. He
has not only attended our activities but more recently attending a local Care Home to visit a life long Dale fan
who is now house bound and struggles with isolation. He is a fantastic role model and a pleasure to work with”
Siobhan McElhinney – Assistant Trust Manager.
