Judy Thorner — Foundation Board Chair To each and every one of you, our amazing and dedicated friends, Thank you! While our hospital may be at the heart of St. Thomas, and Elgin County, you are at the very heart of everything we do. It’s been an incredibly stressful and challenging year for all of us. And you have responded so positively to support hospital staff, fund essential equipment, and support excellent patient care in any way that you can. I truly believe it’s only because of you and your generosity that our hospital has been able to meet not only our community’s needs — but the needs of the entire province — throughout the past year of the COVID pandemic. This report is designed to celebrate you and our other dedicated friends for the immense generosity over the past year. Together, YOU are making our hospital — and our community — great. From my heart to yours, thank you.
Jacqueline Bloom — Foundation Chief Executive Officer When I started in this position in June of 2020, I thought I was coming to St. Thomas for a job. But I ended up being welcomed into such an amazing and wonderful, tight-knit community. Although it was in the midst of a global pandemic, everything has been positive since I came here: from the Foundation and Hospital Boards, to the staff, to the kind and wonderful donors like you. I’m so incredibly grateful to be a part of this community, and am so looking forward to being able to meet you in person soon. Until then, I hope you’ll flip through the pages of this report, which is designed to celebrate YOU and your part in making the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) the very best it can be. Thank you for supporting the foundation through many changes this past year such as moving offices, welcoming three new staff to the Foundation team, and helping welcome a new direction. We’ve enjoyed writing notes and letters to you, along with talking on the phone with you! Because of you, people in St. Thomas and area have access to excellent health care, close to where they live. You’re helping attract bright new doctors who like the state-of-the-art equipment they find at our hospital. You’re helping attract new neighbours, who take into account the quality of our hospital before deciding to move here. You’re helping attract new businesses and economic prosperity to our community as well. From talking to many donors and community members, I’ve learned that St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is a trusted community anchor. We are located in the center of St. Thomas and Elgin County, right at its very heart. I’ve also learned that you are the very lifeblood that keeps our hospital’s heart beating day after day. Thank you for all that you do.
Lyle McLean — Foundation Board Member and Treasurer My three boys were born at STEGH. And, being boys, they spent a fair bit of time at the hospital for other reasons too! I had cancer treatment and other surgeries there myself. I can admit it: during those “family” years I didn’t support our hospital except for perhaps memorial donations. I took it for granted. But then, when I was looking for volunteer opportunities, I was elected to the Hospital Board of Directors. That’s when I gained deep insight into the financial structure of our hospital and the importance of support from our community. It was a real life lesson on how precious our hospital really is. Today I sit on the STEGH Foundation Board, which is teaching me even more. I know that having a good hospital attracts economic growth to our region. But perhaps even more importantly, I support the hospital because I want it to be there when I, or someone I love, need it most!
Sharon Long — Volunteer STEGH really is at the heart of our community. I’m truly grateful for the excellent care my husband received during the heart troubles he had a while ago. The staff are so very supportive and truly dedicated to their work. It’s not much at all for me to volunteer my few hours a week at the Gift Shop. All the other ladies work really hard and are just so nice. Before COVID we used to have regular bake sales and let me tell you, we raised a lot of money to help purchase essential equipment. It feels great to be even a small part of a group of people doing so much good. I’m proud to be a part of this community, where everyone pitches in to make things better for each other.
Kerry Day — Donor I’ve always been a big fan of STEGH. It’s so important for the seniors living in our community. Plus, I know it’s been a factor in attracting the businesses that have come here over the years. I was heavily involved with fundraising and campaigning for our hospital over the years. I was the Foundation Board President and helped raise the funds needed to get our hospital rooms updated in the 1990’s. It’s incredible just how much people in this community care about each other and about making our hospital the best it can be. Personally, I really value the fact that I don’t have to head out of town for care. You can get just about any procedure you need here, except for an MRI — and that’s on the way soon I hear! That’s why I give — to ensure we have great care close to home.
Kristin Weber — Grateful Patient I had a stroke two days before my 40th birthday and ended up partially paralyzed on my right side. I spent five days in London, and then two weeks at STEGH re-learning how to use my right hand and foot. I can’t say enough about the wonderful care-givers at STEGH! The staff and volunteers really do treat you like family. While the big hospital in London gave me excellent care, STEGH just felt like home, you know? I grew up in St. Thomas. I was born at our hospital and so was my son. It will always be my hospital. I’m proud to give back in any way I can to support this amazing place.
Jerry Galbraith — Monthly Donor My family has a long history with St. Thomas. In fact, I was born at our hospital. So were my sister and my brother. My parents were treated there. My father passed at the hospital too. I’ve had my own experience of staying in hospital for an extended period of time. I can say that I was treated incredibly well. So well that I wasn’t all that anxious to leave, in fact! The nurses were all so amazing. It really is an excellent hospital. I give because I know that anything you can give to STEGH really is building the future of this community. I’m giving to help myself as well as those who come after me. Whatever I give, it’s just going to make our hospital even better.
Kathy Hagerman — Legacy Donor My father was a doctor at STEGH for over 40 years. Dad loved his work and had a large impact on his patients during his career. He enjoyed the challenges of diagnosing difficult cases and seeing his patients recover. After my dad died, I felt inspired to carry on his legacy first by donating to STEGH and then by helping to raise funds for the hospital. In a small way, I hope to ensure that all my dad gave to STEGH will continue for generations to come. STEGH is an excellent hospital. I believe it is important to give back to our community in whatever way we can. STEGH is a place that most everyone will need someday. Through donations and fundraising campaigns, its high standard of care can be maintained into the future.
Tonya Sheldon — Staff Donor I’ve been given so many great opportunities to learn and grow since I started working at STEGH in 2001. I really enjoy working here and there’s such an amazing sense of community. We really do look after each other and help one another out. Both of my children were born at STEGH, so this is my family’s hospital, not just my place of employment. It’s truly such a benefit to have a strong hospital right here in the community, ready to provide care whenever we need it. Working in Hospital Finance I know the demand for dollars in our healthcare system. Investing in equipment is vital to make our hospital the very best it can be. I’m just happy to be able to give back in whatever way I can.
Joni Dobson — Donor Nancy Lawrence — Event Organizer Mental health is an issue that is very near and dear to my heart. I started volunteering with a group of I’ve lived in this community for people to run the Railway City Road almost 10 years now. Our Heart Beats for…You! Supporting your community through Covid-19 The COVID Fund YOU supported provided special safety goggles, care packages, training, and programs specifically designed to support and encourage staff throughout this challenging time. YOU have lifted OUR Hospital’s spirits so we can continue to provide you and your loved ones with excellent care. Giving heart-felt relief to front-line workers We can’t begin to express how grateful we are for the outpouring of love and support we’ve received from YOU — our caring community — over the past year. The kind messages, drive-by parades, and copious generous donations brought positivity and smiles to many STEGH staff faces. Ryad Ali and his parents are from Mississauga and for his birthday in May, he decided to ask for donations for STEGH. Earlier this year, both Ryad’s mother and father were diagnosed with COVID. His mother was transferred to STEGH’s Intensive Care Unit in April. For three months, Ryad’s mother, Zorida, was on a ventilator in ICU, but is now in hospital recovering. Ryad’s dad has since recovered and is back home. Because of your help, we have patient care equipment necessary to provide care when it’s needed most.
A special thank you for the lunches! So many local businesses and individuals gave generously to ensure our staff were well-fed during the past year! A special shout-out to Glen Williams, who gifted $10,000 to buy lunch for all of our staff. Glen said, “I am sure most of us can’t imagine the stress you must face every day with this awful COVID disease. Not knowing if or when you could catch it, but also the possibility of taking it home to your families. My parents began the Don & Hazel Williams Charitable Foundation in 1992 with the intent of giving back to the local community. Please accept this small token of our appreciation not only from the Foundation but also on behalf of the residents of Elgin County. Thank you for your commitment every day and please enjoy lunch on us.” A win-win for you and your hospital: 50/50 draw! You may have noticed that, in October of 2020, we added a monthly online 50/50 draw to help support patient care at STEGH. Our community has been nothing but supportive and enthusiastic about this initiative. We’ve had the chance to offer Early Bird Prizes from businesses within our community as well as fund essential equipment such as broda chairs for Continuing Care, a pediatric positioning aid for Radiology, lifts throughout the hospital, and many additional items. Thank you for your generosity and good luck! Gifts of Gratitude As you’ve read the quotes from a few of our grateful patients and donors, you know there are many people in your community who are incredibly grateful for the care they’ve received at STEGH. Many would like to do something extra to say thank you, which is why we created the Gifts of Gratitude program. Patients who feel moved to do so can make a donation in honour of their care provider or care team. Their donation and recognition is shared with the care provider or care team who then have the opportunity to say thank you to the patient who honoured them. The program launch has been delayed due to COVID-19, however you can be sure there are many healthcare care teams who will be celebrated once it is safe again to do so!
A Message from the Treasurer - Lyle McLean As we enter a new fiscal year, we wish to thank all of you who have supported us the past year, especially throughout a global pandemic that’s impacted healthcare greatly. In 2020, under new leadership, the Foundation developed a strategic fund development plan that aims to further strengthen patient care and intensify donor partnerships within our community. 2020–21 was a pivotal year in fundraising as in person events were put on hold, yet, gross revenues were higher and net revenues were virtually the same as the prior year! The cost per dollar raised was just under $0.30 while the return on investment was over 240%! Donors have donated more than $1.3M that STEGH can use for specific purposes in the future, such as the lab 2021 2020 Total Total Funds Funds $ $ REVENUES Leadership/ Individual 1,041,631 1,863,943 Legacy giving 817,873 171,669 337,460 - 50/50 online Direct marketing 264,135 121,930 Memoriam giving 190,112 244,534 Grant writing 162,771 25,400 Community events 65,964 185,944 42,995 - Jumbo club Investment income 8,283 20,259 9,358 - Employee engagement - 201,69 7 Foundation events 2,940,582 2,835,376 EXPENDITURES Salaries and benefits 397,065 403,168 Direct fundraising costs 360,886 124,843 Indirect operating costs 103,396 118,229 861,347 646,240 EXCESS OF REVENUES OVER EXPENDITURES 2,079,235 2,189,136 NET ASSETS, BEGINNING OF YEAR 1,149,218 (8,071) Distributions to the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (Note 6) (1,079,218) (1,031,847) NET ASSETS, END OF YEAR 2,149,235 1,149,218
