OUR ULTIMATE GOAL... “To be recognised as a preferential multipurpose campus for both community & commercial sport & recreation across the region”
CHAIRS REPORT Taking over the role of Chairperson for the NSEC was never going to be a light task. Under the leadership of Chairman Wayne Miles for so many years it was a steady ship with clearly defined roles and expectations from Staff and Trustees. But change has taken place as the Trust Board has moved from its more administrative role to one of Governance. The urgent matter of the renewal of the Lease from RFA and of consequence the modification and modernisation of the Trust Deed and Constitution has been ably executed with the help of our newly appointed CEO Brian Blake together with Trust Board members led by Howard Johnson. No simple task. It took time, tenacity and an understanding of the core values as well as much debate and a willingness to get the best results for the community and core users of the Centre. Well done team and thanks to RFA for being so willing to understand our underpinning values which now gives us security of tenure for another 20 years. At the same time another change was taking place. Public opinion had been casting the Centre into the “looking tired” category. Today the foyer is very much a “meet and greet” space with hi tech visual, pretty amazing floor tiles and roof tiles accented with the red sprinkler pipe. It is modern and appealing. Again, thanks to the team who worked hard for this very positive outcome. Also to cap it off, the new foyer area is ably manned during the day/evening by Mikayla and Ivris. Investigation of the building fabric shed light on the sort of issues we need to address in our new Long Term Maintenance Plan. Our next major upgrade will be the new floor for the indoor sports area for which funding has already been secured. Well done Brian and Helen. Next on the list will be the roof of the Centre. Apart from the major upgrades we have the ongoing cosmetic improvements ably undertaken by our newly appointed handyman Shane. The Centre is shining! We continue to look for new avenues for funding the centre outside from our core and community users. To this end Kevin McAllister has moved to a marketing role and Mitchell Richmond is now the operations manager. It is a very capable team to take the Centre forward The Centre cannot run without outside funding for its ongoing utility and special projects. Without this external support community use would be jeopardised. We are privileged to have received funds from Regional Facilities Auckland and Kaipatiki Local Board, Lotteries Commission, Lion Foundation, and NZ Community Trust, Foundation North & Hibiscus & Bays Local board. Under the new Constitution a rotation of trust board members and time limits has been introduced. For the next three years at AGM’s trust board members retire. It is with sadness that we farewell 3 members. Jeff Olson a fabulous representative for our core user Basketball, Michael Thomas an outstanding businessman, and Richard Casutt a wonderful advocate for sport will be leaving us this year. And a very special thank you to all Trust Board members. Without your collective input my job would have been so much harder. I look forward to the next exciting year. Paddy Stafford-Bush
CHIEF EXECUTIVES REPORT It has been a pleasure to join the team here this year. Arriving in May of 2017 the first nine months of my involvement was focused on assisting the board to achieve a new lease with Regional Facilites Auckland on behalf of Council and also to support the board through the tricky process of moving form an administrative board to a governance board. Of course, after some 20 years of operation this was always going to be a careful process to ensure the success of the past was not lost in pursuit of the future. We want our facility to be one that kids and parents alike look forward to coming to. In order to achieve this, we needed to provide a warm, welcoming and supportive experience. To achieve this our renovation programme is well and truly underway as you can see. With around 500k spent on the entrance to the facility over Christmas of 2017, this Christmas we will be investing more into the fabric of the facility with significant works on the roof and finally replacing the iconic (or perhaps notorious depending on who you ask) Parque Sports Floor with a state of the art playing surface. The research is clear. There is a causal link between people being able to recreate and connect within their community and positive, healthy social outcomes. The North Shore, while a diverse community is exceptionally well served by this facility and for me this has been a real education. Each year North Shore Events Centre will host over 380,000 visitors. That’s more than 1,000 visitors per day every day of the year day in, day out without missing a beat. That is roughly 130 people per hour, every single hour of the year of the working week. It is a truly impressive number. These visitors are made up of Basketballers, Trampoline kids, Gymnasts, The Korean Community, The Scottish Community, Religious festivals, Motor Racing enthusiasts, Drone racers and the list goes on across the whole spread of community. Our community stretches the length and breadth of Auckland and often across New Zealand. While we often aren’t thought of as a major regional facility it is these events that bring people from around New Zealand to stay in our hotels, eat in our restaurants and to play in our communities. I am fortunate to have the benefit and support of an outstanding Leadership Team in Helen Lacey, Mitchell Richmond and of course Kevin McAlister to help execute and guide our programme. While it’s no secret we aim to grow this facility in its impact and influence this team help me to ensure we keep the baby while improving the bathwater. I also would like to thank our major funding supporters. Regional Facilities Auckland, The Kaipatiki Local board and a host of others have been major contributors to the works you see around you and the programme coming up in future. Without the support of Maree Laurent at Regional Facilities Auckland, John Gillon & Danielle Grant (as well as the other elected members) at the Kaipatiki Local board we would be struggling to deliver this programme of upgrades for our community. Finally, and by no means least I would like to thank the Trust Board. It has been a very challenging and breakneck year of rewarding improvements and this board has struck the balance between cautious encouragement and retention of focus better than most. Led by Paddy and Bevan it has been a pleasure to lead the team on your behalf and to start getting into the promise that this facility owns on behalf of the North Shore Community. Kind Regards Brian Blake Chief Executive

BY THE NUMBERS Each year the team work tirelessly to introduce new income generating ideas that don’t corrupt the time available to the community. We are committed to a model that sees the more commercial operations subsidise the cost of providing affordable and accessable community sport and recreation and educational opportunities. While we intend to grow Commercial use and income we appreciate that this is a delicate balance and we are committed to not losing our way and becoming just another commercial events venue that forgets our community. Our venue will always be one that welcomes Sport & Recreation in all its forms and works to balance the schedule. Our primary focus will always be on our Anchor User Community that forms the beating heart of this facility. North Harbour Gymnastics North Harbour Basketball North Shore Trampoline These are our core users. Wherever possible we will schedule content to attract visitors from across Auckland and New Zealand in order to subsidise NORTH HARBOUR BASKETBALL the true cost of delivering the facility. JUNIOR PREMIERSHIPS 17.8% INCOME FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENT (AND JUST QUIETLY WE’RE PRETTY PROUD ITS THAT LOW)
ANCHOR USERS AT HOME Our Anchor Users are a very special set of users because of our shared heritage on site at North Shore Events Centre. In the case of both Gymnastics and North Harbour Basketball both of these (now) Anchor Users were key motivators to getting the building that is now known as North Shore Events Centre built in 1992. For over twenty years now the three organisations have co existed on this site. The two clubs deliver the sport and the Trust Board that owns the building, and maintains it through the funds raised from commercial acitivites. In recent years Basketball and Gymnastics have been joined by North Shore Trampoline who are now also housed within North Shore Events Centre. In December 2017 the lease between Auckland Council and the North Shore Events Centre Trust Board came to an end. With that conclusion came the end of the various Anchor User Agreements for Basketball and Gymnastics. After lengthy negotiation the Trust Board now has a lease signed with Regional Facilities Auckland. This lease confirms the community purpose of this facility for the foreseeable future. We are very happy to be able to continue to provide a home to all of our users, community and commercial, but having this lease signed has been a signficant piece of work for the Trustees.
