How to Successfully Age in Place Surveys generally show that older adults want to age in their own home and the community familiar to them. It has also been shown that living in one’s own home contributes to a long life. But life for the senior community is changing and it’s crucial to assist elders with these dramatic changes. Additionally, it is essential that for those seniors who have adapted to the use of technology for living that they not let such adaptive life- style changes keep them from leaving the home. This technology has become almost a must for individuals who want to continue to live in their own home. Smart phones are essential as wearable devices attached to smart phones can monitor health and activity, se- curity cameras and other devices can help with safety and tracking devices can assist family and friends stay in touch or provide help in a moment’s notice. Adding to the change in behavior patterns if of course, the pan- demic. This has meant a rise in the use of telehealth and the placing of medical equipment in the home for re- view and monitoring. Such changes can be confusing and not always successful. Ordering groceries and other supplies online then delivered to the front door of a home has become more commonplace; all done through a few touches of a small-screened computer, your phone. These changes are likely permanent and have, for some, made living in the home a bit easier The fact remains that isolation from the community, from friends and neighbors however, is not healthy. Aside from the pan- demic, societal trends have led us to the point where older adults are more likely to be isolated or lonely.” Many are no longer in the workforce, are apt to live alone and extended families are more geographically dis- persed than past generations. And while some individuals feel content in isolation, most do not. While adults and their families must stay connected as much as possible, it is imperative that seniors either begin again, or just begin, being a part of the larger community. I have often stated that while Senior Services can offer games, activities and events, doing so does very little if you choose to stay in your home. And yes, a video call can be helpful, there is just nothing like conversation, activity and socialization among people. We will always welcome you here at the center. We want your ideas, your input and mostly, we want you to be a part of us. Doing so is the best answer to the question, “How can I age successfully in place”?
